Thread: Tuesday Tips – October 19th: Re-mapping the Alt Key

TH- for some odd reason it won't let you remap the Left Alt key. The Right Alt gets remapped, but you cannot remove the binding from the Left Alt. Thisis why "clear binding" doesn't work. My main char from launch has the Left Alt remapped, but it will not allow it for new chars.

Tried this... It only says that you can't unmap toggle mouse mode.

You should be able to re-map it to something, even if it is just the ALT key again. You just can't leave it empty.

I tried this, it will not allow you to clear the binding at all, and you can not remove ALT as one of the bindings. You can add a 2nd binding, but ALT is always bound it seems.

That part is on purpose. because the ALT mode is critical to playing the game, we didn't want players to be able to get into a state where that didn't work.

Would be even better if the Dev's put in a visual indicator in the ticket room indicating if the transport is on the ground and if not how long it will be....... (hint hint!!).

QFE, That would be GREAT and helpful...something as simple as making the background boards that tell planets and times and stuff, making those update with 'real time' times it saying when the transport is due and when its landed....ect. You know, while I'm thinking of clever ideas maybe on imperial places, like imp post, dantooine.....the ticket droid is replaced by a stormtrooper...that would be cool.

Hey TH, just noticed you posted before I posted this

Nice tip.

Another useful option involving the Alt. Green Cursor- pull out your favorite vehicle and set the dead zones of the green cursor to be on the immediate left and right edges of the vehicle. Then when riding your vehicle you will have more precise control while in the green cursor mode, which comes in very handy on the race circuit as well as anywhere there are objects on the ground that otherwise stop your vehicle.

I just set my dead zone all the way to nothing and leave it there all the time. If I need the mouse to move without moving me, I right click, do my business with mouse-look off, and then rightclick to turn mouse-look on again.

In my past experience, you can NOT remove alt as a binding to toggle mouse mode - Re-binding again binds it to Alt,<New key>. I can understand not wanting to allow this to blank out, but let us remove the Alt binding from it so we can use Alt for something else (or bind alt to something else).

A long time ago, we were able to unbind the Alt key, and i've found this to be immensely useful, as it now allows me to bind Alt-%lt;key> for custom bindings (i.e. Alt-m to /harvest meat). When i purchased my second account, i was unable to bind the alt combinations because it would not allow me to unbind alt from toggle (even though i had already bound another key to toggle). I was able to work around it by copying my keymap from my first profile to my second profile, but as you can imagine this screwed alot of stuff up that i had to resolve before being able to use it.

TH, if/when there is time, please have someone review the code for this peice of the UI and verify/make it so the alt key is re-bindable.

Thanks

EDIT: Re-added the <key> that was stripped by the boards...

Speaking of, is there any way to remap the zoom in/out for the overhead map? Not all of us have mouse wheels. I use a trackball both for ergonomic reasons and because I find them far better for first person games. But good trackballs with mouse wheels are rare.

I've never found remapping options for the overhead map zoom level, but am perfectly willing to edit a file if necessary.

I map my alt key to the middle mouse button and there seems to be a delay when changing modes in JTL. In Live i dont have this problem.

Has anyone got a tip as how to write the characters "<", ">" and "\" inside the game?
Everytime I have to use them I have to paste them from outside...
I use a danish keyboard.

I have the same problem with a standard azerty keyboard.

This is what I do: I first write them in notepad, copy

then I open the ingame notepad (/no) and paste them [underneath my geo lab codes ]. no you can just close the notepad, and recall it with /no

thats at least one alt tab less when I need them.

this is (af far as I know) the fastest way to use them, since alt-codes dont work in swg.

Yeah you can't simply remove the alt binding. If you did that you could get yourself in a messy situation (imagine being stuck in the green cursor mode). It should be easier to rebind the thing then it currently is, but it will work if you fiddle with it.

To whomever said spacebar for clear combat queue, good idea. I also like the multi-function mousewheel, very nice.
