I think any new player to the game at this point needs to start reading their profession forums at least. It's the only way to maintain long term interest and create Vets from Newbs. There are people I've played with since launch who never read the boards, and the changes to the game cause them much strife. If they'd read the forums they'd be on top of things more often, and without regular forum posts the game doesn't change for the best.

That was largely a great post, but I have one question:
What the heck is your problem with trial newbies? I was a trial newbie just 2 months ago. I stayed in the game largely because of the nice people I'd met. Some of the nicest in any MMORPG I've played. I think you've got some huge misconceptions about trial newbies. Most of my friends are all trial newbies too, and I got several of my real life friends to play by starting on the trial. What's your beef man?

Ok as far as the armour/buff debate goes i think that you should give armour to newbies, just not a really rubbish suit of comp. A good suit of chitin or even armourweave is far more beneficial due to the low enc. And as far as buffs are concerned i think newbies should leave them alone. What will a newbie be killing that needs a buff? And buffs are far too exspensive these days for a newbie to have to pay. When i started the game i found a suit of armourweave on the bazaar and as soon as id saved up enough i had a really good suit of chitin made for myself. I didnt use a buff forweeks and i rarely use them now. I think that this is the most helpful thing to do for a newbie. Oh, and tell them that their helper is dead good and not only for noobs 8).

I have been practicing this kind of thing for ages. dont realy do it for the combat profesions much cause I dont activly seek out n00bs to help. however on my musician I dont know how many sets of the startign 5 insturments I have made. I see ANYONE playing a slitherhorn and I crank out the 3 entertainer insturments and give em to them at no cost. I then check to see if they know how all the entertainer experience works (I have met people who are halfway to master musician who still dont know your music exp is based off your instument and not the song you play.) most of the time these people dont stick with the profesion and thats fine with me its not for everyone and I would rather help 10 people who quit than 1 who turns out to be an afk buffbot. (Thank god we dont have many of those on my musicians server) and if they are still drabed in newbie clothes (or worse yet, hotpants for guys or a loot exotic leotard for gals) I take them to the shoping city and we get em something decent.

I read the entire post...incredible amounts of good stuff... i am a very big newbie helper on chilestra server... many a day i have wasted my buffs just talking to newbies and hooking them up with weapons and armor pets and mounts... I remember when i was noobie.... took me a week to get off of talus..... and a month to get a speeder bike.... I stress the importance of telling them how the stats work on guns and weapons.. expecially the attack speed stat.... another thing that helps newbies out is getting them off the low end planets... i recommend doing juanta's with them on dantoonie... buy them a buff throw them some armor and they will be able to hang....

I'm playing since early june but many still consider me a nub because i rip ppl who jump on my tusken to steal the loot fro me. Anyway the #1 thing you should do for a nub is show him some respect, and don't treat him like a lower class citizen...

I joined the Fan Club just to tell you thank you, for the pointers and the help. I've been playing for around 3 months, and still consider my self a newbee. I try to help any other people i see even if they have all the badges that I know of. The only way I ever made it past my first week was due to people helping me out, I started as a scout, hehe i thought I could kill anything, yep used my 3 free clones in about 4 hours. Right now I'm novice Ranger, Bio Eng and CH, I give away pets and try to help others as much as possible, and I'm glad to see other people are out there willing to take a few min. to make the game enjoyable.
If your on Wanderhome and need anything, try me, I have litle money and I can't kill much (even with my best pet and a floaty droid) but I'm willing to try

For all combat skills...
1. Hover close during battles and heal their damage
2. VERY IMPORTANT: Show them how to "tap" lairs to GRADUALLY release the creatures!
- A. Show them how to set up their hot-key bank so it shows two rows at a time, and make sure they have both the "Attack" and "Peace" hotkeys in it
- A. After killing all the creatures already outside the lair and harvesting from them (including searching the lair for goodies), explain how to tap the lair ONE TIME ONLYthen hit "Peace" and wait for the first batch of creatures to spawn from the lair
- B. Kill all the creatures that spawn from that first tap, then harvest from them
- C. Attack the lair again until you've gotten it down to about 55% of its original damage total, then hit "Peace" again and wait for the second spawn
- D. Kill all the creatures from the second spawn and harvest your meat/hide/bone... and show them how to examine the product to check the quality... explaining the role of the stats for crafting
- E. Let the newbie kill the lair for its XP... but be on guard for the occasional Boss Creature right before the lair dies
Come to think of it, this might not be a bad post for some (cough-cough) "advanced" (cough-cough)playersI've seen who just charge into a lair with guns blazing, or hacking away with their sword...
Happy hunting!

First of all: A great post!
Second my 2 cents to all this:
How to help artisans: Explain to them what high and low quality ressources are (the new quality bar helps a lot
) and tell them how this will affect their creations. Show them that high quality items will be sold quite well even when made by newbies and as already posted tell them about good prices. Good prices are those that are cheap enough to inspire someone to buy and high enough to pay out for the seller. Check the bazaars with them together and show/teach by examples what you would buy and what not, if you were new and hadn't got enough money to buy everything.
I strongly recommend anyone doing the newbie missions because they not only provide you with some extra xp, some starter items but with about 2.5-3k money for each completet one too. When starting a new char I do them myself again and again. Just an easy way to earn money with a little work.
The dream newbie (even a nightmare is a dream ;-)):
First of all I hate those guys, who just pop into the game and beg for money to buy the best weapons and/or armor instantly. Usually I tell them to do some missions but fall on deaf ears. Those didn't get anything from me. :-P
I play for about 5-6 month now and yesterday I could afford to buy me my first composite armor. Until then I ran around with hand crafted mabari and leather armor. Ok maybe I died 10 or 20 times more but thats life, you won't get sugar blown into your ass all the time. And I bet I hadn't less fun than those whiners with top equipment from the start on.
Back to dream newbies: For me these are the guy's who ask a whole mountain of quastions which show they are interested into the deeper things of the game and not only want to get the best mechanics for power grinding(i.e. "How does that count? How does function xy? NOT: "How do I get Jedi in one week" :-D). I like those guys who try to RP a bit and have made up some own ideas even before stepping into this new world (even if they have to change their minds due to special circumstances/bugs/game mechanics and change their character too) and who try to get those ideas alive. I like those guys who ask for help if they are in dire need of it and try to learn for themself as much as they can, those who pop in sometimes to tell your of their own first newbie. Then I know the seed has fallen on fertile ground.
