Pistoleer fits well with Ranger.

If you like to crawl a lot, go rifles. If you want to have to use a droid to harvest for you, go rifles. If you are afraid of in your face fighting, go rifles.

If not, stay pistols and tell your guild they are full of poopie and I said so.

If you want to be the current FOTM harvest machine, go TK, buy armor and buff endlessly. Yawn... just look out for GDKS.

If you really want to hunt, can use traps, and can use simple tactics, stay pistols.

I like Rifleman personally, but any profession can be made to work with Ranger as long as you learn it (i.e. don't afk for all your experience as you won't have a feel for the nuances of the profession for a while if you automatically have access to all the specials at once).

But, yeah, do whatever YOU like, not what your guildies like...you'll play more.

I think its all about what you enjoy to do. Do not let other people tell you how to play this game. If you master pistols and find out that it is not working for you, well you are all the wiser and a little richer. I am going rifles right now, but going carbines might be the best of both worlds. You can put some distance like rifles, but you can get up close and stick states on animals like pistols. Good luck and I hope you find a template you enjoy.

I choose somewhat different, namely CH as additional class. Rather fun tough.

For combat I rely on rifle, and mainly/only concealshot which is very usefull when concealed/using camouflage.

When things get tough, I always have traps and pistol (marksman 41-2).

Point what you need to figure out yourself, as others have said too, is to find whatever suits you, what you like and feel comfortable with. That's the whole fun part of it.

I prefer rifles as well, and I've been both a pistoleer/ranger and a rifleman/ranger. Rifles have higher damage outputs, wide selection of damage types (dxr6 is so great for adventure planet hunting imho),and better AP options. Plus, if you like the idea of a "stealthy" ranger there is nothing quite like dropping a malkloc plainswalker while prone/camo'd at long range with Headshot3 and feeling that thump when they keel over

Armor is mostly optional for ranger/rifleman as well, which is nice in a few respects. The way rifles work now pretty much everything is dead before it knows you're there, so once you learn the ropes you will rarely be in danger of a creature actually making contact with you.

Well, I found that being a pistoleer in a group stunk, since the second the melee guys drop (or run) I was next in line to be slaughtered, still waiting for the rifleman to blast it away. I just let my animal do the tanking and I blast away unharmed. Fun until the animal gets it.

That's a badly structured / disciplined group more than a fault in pistoleer though?

I try, and I repeat _try_ to get the ranged profs in my groups to understand that their weapons work best at the optimum range and that's different for pistol, carbine and rifle. It also varies from weapon to weapon and I'd expect them to know which one of the tools they have chosen to use works best at what range.

In a mixed group I try to get the riflemen out at 60m, about 30m apart and spaced round the lair. The carbineers sit nicely in the middle, near the novice medic who does REALLY well out of banging stims into their butts. Then the pistoleers at their best range and ready to drop back behind the carbineers when / if it gets a bit shaky.

The melee folk? Well they're already down there thumping away with strong warnings that they are NOT to use area attacks and hit the lairs. Likewise the ranged folk are, wherever possible, trying to target the same pools.

COurse it all goes to heck when folk start running about trying to get loot/harvests or 'accidentally' spam a bleed onto the aggro reds next door...

We tried organising things so group members were in either the red or blue section, which worked to the left or right of the field, but again, unless folks are disciplined and ready to work withing a rule set, it tends to fall apart pretty fast.

Anyhow, to sort of get back on topic, there's room for all sorts of combat types in the Ranger prof, some have more advantages than others, but they all have their niche.

How is your play style?

what do you want?

Melee? or ranged?

Melee currently does tons more damage than the ranged, Swordsman can have access to blast damage which few things have a good res to and do tons of damage to creatures. TK's meditate away disease.

Pistols are fast and do little damage

to the best of my knowledge, only three have Light AP, DX2, Republican Blaster, DE-10.

You have a wide range of damage available to you with pistols, Acid, Energy, Stun, Heat, and lastly Kinetic

Most pistols are best at 'close' range, not really hand-to-hand, but close.

Rifles are slow but deal large amounts of damage

Rifles have medium and heavy AP

Rifles have a variety of damage types, as well, do not think it is as extensive as pistols

Rifles are used from a far distance.

As a former Master Pistoleer, I know how pistols are. It is up to you to decide. I have taken out a Dune Kimo solo as a Master Pistoleer. It was long and I did a fair amount of burstrunning, but I did it. It is up to you to decide.

I was previously a Master Smuggler/Pistoleer, now a Master Ranger/Riflegirl and in between I was training up the ranks of Ranger using both weapons.

As all the others have said, do what you like to do, you will have WAY more fun in your gaming. As a smuggler I thought a quick draw pistol was the thing to have on my hip, as Ranger I decided I'd like to lie in the dirt, camo cream all over my face and take precision aimed shots at unsuspecting beasties.

There is plenty of evidence for both weapons working.. which is more to your style of play? Lying in the dirt, crawling about and dropping kills in 3-4 shots, or being nimble of foot, throwing lots of traps, using the terrain to outrun your prey and keeping mobile.

The worst thing that can happen is you get 2222 or 4xx4 etc and think, nah I don't like this. Just sell your weapons, grab some starter ones for the other prof and back into it. One of the greatest things I love about Scout/Ranger is that we kill for a reason, not just for xp. I got all4 CHtrees (not all at once mind as 18 skill pts left!) to train my pets, and mastered rifles and I didn't "grind" once cos it all came while I was contract harvesting for people. And if you get yourself glowing, all that hunting gives money, fun and xp aplenty to trade in every 2-3 days as well.

Bah, balls to this harvest change lark... I love being a Ranger... *skips off into the woods*

Until I need a few more skill points for Master Rifleman, I am a Master Marksman. I made Master Scout with only a Republic blaster. It was a lot of fun and I got a lot of mileage out of my traps during that time. I also learned a great deal.

After making Master Scout, I picked up rifles and carbines to fill out the Marksman tree. Each weapon and fighting style has its own plusses and minuses; you are successful when the end result sees you alive and your opponent dead.

I spent a while trying out the various weapons and really like the states a carbine can inflict, as well as the high damage and speed of the better models (mine are all sliced). Very good weapons, especially since "long" range really isn't. Carbines are a great combination of decent range, good damage, and the potential to inflict nifty states.

Trying out a variety of weapons, I decided that I much prefer using rifles. Since training in Rifleman, I have almost exclusively used my rifles, even at close range; that's what spraysticks are for. I'll be paring down my inventory now.

There is no right or wrong fighting style, as long as you are successful in your encounters. Use your head and you'll go far. If you find that you are incapped a lot, evaluate your tactics first, then decide if your weapon preference matches your hunting style.

my template is mbh/master rifleman/novice smuggler on my alt, would it be better to make the switch to mbh/master pistoleer/something? Give me some reasons why the switch would help my jedi hunting and what i could use those extra sp for instead of novice smuggler if i made the switch or if i should keep rifles and put those smugg points maybe in pistoleer or something else?
