you can also replace whisper with anyone chat style option to say something directly to another player

/say>warryyr Nice work Fuzzball would show: Deuce Wildcard says to Warryyr "Nice work Fuzzball"

try it out.../yell>playername or /shout>playername work too, big help in making sure the person your talking to knows your comments are directed at them.

Do you folks ever use the different moods or chat bubbles?

Too clunky to type all that out, especially with typo's. I'd much rather have colors back in chat. If it were easier to apply a mood to certain messages, I might do it more often. Or better yet, its really just the animations I want. I would MUCH rather be able to trigger certain animations without the resulting canned spam message attached to my message"... says happily" or "...ponders".

Yes, that is an excellent feature, I like to keep my business discussions private

The whispering emote along with the whispering function is great too.

Just a quick bit of info... when you just use the plain "/whisper" your text will be seen by players in a smaller radius than when you use normal chat ("/say").

I don't know the exact numbers, but "/whisper" has a smaller radius and "/shout" ("yell" or other versions of talking loudly) have a larger radius.

In other words, if a player cannot see your chat bubble when you type normally, they may be able to "hear" you (See your text) if you "/shout" your text.

Something tells me somewhere around 30 meters is the range for whispering, but I honestly don't know for sure.

Shouting to groupmates during a hunt can sometimes help.

I play next to another player in real life... and there are times that She types something in, while I'm a bit out of range, so she'll retype it using "/shout" at the beginning and my character can then see the text (As long as I'm within shouting distance).

Just thought I'd mention all that so that people know that the regular "/whisper" is not completely useless compared to the "/whisper>PLAYERNAME" command.

"Know where I can get some death-sticks?"
That'd speak out loud to everyone within range.

"/whipser Know where I can get some death-sticks?"
Speaks the text outloud to those closer to you, but not to players a bit farther away that could see normal text from you. People around you can hear you, but those across the room may not.

"/shout Know where I can get some death-sticks?"
This would make your text visable to other players much farther away from you... and likely get you arrested.
Not only do the people across the room hear you, but so do the Storm Troopers outside of the cantina and the crime-lords in the backroom behind the bar.

"/whisper>Omadda Know where I can get some death-sticks?"
You lean over towards Omadda and whisper into his ear, so that only he can here your desperate question regarding your ilegal addiction. (He may be able to help you)

I'm going to guess that regular chat has a 60 meter radius, whisper has a 30 meter radius and shout has an 80 meter radius...
But that is entirely just guess-work. I think I'll test those numbers out when we log on later tonight.

May the force be with you.

No I don't....I've ALWAYS wondered how people used them. I take that back...I have used moods, but not the chat bubbles.

Wanna get out your aggressions on those pesky ST's, but don't wanna pay a price for it? Target one and type /emote slaps %TT across the face. The '%TT' will fill in the target's full name. You don't get an animation with it, but the message is still out there for everyone to see.

Anyone have the idiots guid to chat bubbles...I STILL dont understand how to use them. I see the different styles, but I don't know how to format them in chat. I really like chat bubble style 5, how would I use that?

I remember testing this out on a hunting trip with the NBS (for you old-school Naritusians) sometime in 2003, so my memory may be off, but I think it's 30, 60 and 90m for whipser, say, and yell/shout respectively.

Not often. I don't find them to be that convenient to use for one, and for another, my character is rarely in any particular mood except what I can express by typing. I did notice though, once, I was trying to create a performance macro with some moods to accentuate some parts of the song I wanted to do, but I found that the mood switching did not work reliably in the macro. It didn't always switch before the text that I wanted to use it for or it didn't switch everytime I changed the mood. I don't remember exactly now. Maybe there was some a bit of lag in switching moods sometimes. I just remember I didn't get it to work and I haven't experimented with it much since.

The chat commands with the bubbles are awesome, those are perfect and a feature I use all the time!

The moods have some issues though.

1. Players forget and leave them on even when the mood doesn't match what they are saying and the tone they are trying to convey.

2. They are a little over kill. The chat commands give you a text line tool that covers the MUD bases just fine. Moods don't need to add text as well, replacing the idle animation is enough!

3. There aren't enough unique animations, we need a lot more options and we need a few really subtle ones - all the current animations are sooooooo in your face. "I'm happy! See?!? See?!? See me bouncing and looking around all jolly? See?!?!??!" Sheesh, can't you just be in a good mood where you don't want to look bored and sighing like the non-mood animation loop?

My other social tool wish is for emotes. The anims all rock hardcore, but it would be nice to be able to turn off the text. You can't use an emote back to back with out spamming the area. This would make sense in a MUD, but it's just really annoying in a 3D game.

Tip: Use Moods only when you really want to convey that tone. Make sure you turn the mood off by typing /mood none before you say something that doesn't fit!
