Thread: Friday Feature January 21st – Combat Upgrade New Faction Armor

So, I've been working with the team to try and get that Rebel Helmet into the game. My last discussions about it left off with it going into the loot revamp as a drop- - I'll check on that again early next week too.

Good observations - that is the approach the art team had when putting the Rebel armor together - - that it should look low tech.
So what of those of us who have beennoting the exactopposite, that the armor actually appears too high tech? Their actualexecution of the approachmight have been lost on a good portion of folks, unfortunately.
The sentiment exists because although the armor looks slightly rag tag, hence the bits of cloth here and there-- the actual armor parts look shiny, complicated, and advanced. The assault helmet and chest platelook positively high-tech to many... looking even more advanced than Imperial plastic-wear.

There is actually no precedent for Rebel Armor in the Canon and very very little in the EU. We did quite a bit of research and none of the EU rebel armor was anywhere near as cool as the Imperial armor so we worked with LucasArts to get the new armor approved.
This new Rebel Armor is canon now
Nope, not canon till seen in the films, sorry, TH!
It's just one more nebulous EU entry that has already been contradicted by the original trilogy.
I still feel the devs dropped the ball BIG TIME with this. Stop insisting that armor must LOOK like armor! USE the freakin Rebel uniforms from ANH and give them armor prots, make them AS-craftable! I'd rather see a faction battle that LOOKS like something from the film, instead of Stormtroopers blasting away at something we've never seen outside of SWG. You keep saying that the powers that be want to give a more Star Wars feel to the game, then we're given something like this, that's counterproductive to the stated purpose.

Can Wookiees wear this factoional armor? We want to have fun too.
I don't know, but I will find out next week.
Hey Thunderheart..good job on the armor. Can ithorians wear the rebel armor also? Thanks.
Definitely not the helmets, though the Ithorians will have a competative suit of armor for each tier. Early next week, I will sit down with the artists and put together an little armor chart that shows which species can wear the different suits.

Hey TH, thanks for coming around on a Saturday!
Could you find the answer to "Why the Rebel Helmet (ROTJ Endor Helmet) was removed as a reward, and no longer attainable?" Please?![]()
Aye, I will. I made a note of it and Ill look into it when I get back into the office next week.
About the Rebel Trooper Helemets, if loot drop means it's the fastest way to get them in... hehe, then any way is good, but I'd like to see them implemented the right way (awarded through Faction and having armor stats).
It was the fastest way to get them in. And any balancing of the helmet would happen (probably) as part of the CU.
May the Force be with you

And also withyou.
You're right - my bad.

I am going to just take a guess here and say that the armor that we just saw in this weeks friday feature may be it in terms of new armor....just a guess. But I was curious with Episode 3 coming out in a few months...and being a huge Wookiee Fan I noticed that they are wearing some sort of battle helmets / protection in the trailer. Have any of you been in contact with the lucas team to incorporate new items into the game that may be Episode 3 related yet?
Similar to that the geonocians, and droids that we currently see in game...but mostly for the sake of items for some species to wear(wooks)
So... how about changing the armor'sart to an"as-seen-onscreen" Rebel uniform, then??

Because...it...isn't..armor...?
Who... cares??
The game doesn't need something that (as someone else so aptly put it) looks like a load of Star Trek reject armor. Give us the screen-used Rebeluniforms, and slap armor prots on them. If the concept bugs you... they're using PSGs, OK? ![]()

If you ask me, PSGs are far more Star Trek than any of the armor I see up there...

I'll grant you that... although droidekas sure had good ones.... ![]()
Bottom line is, the aesthetics of this game are as big a part as the underlying game mechanic... even more so, when you think about it. You could use the underlying game system for ANY sci-fi based MMORPG... it's the overall LOOK of the game that makes it feel ( or not feel)like Star Wars. If you compromise that on amajor item such as whatone entire side of the GCWwears into battle... might as well just hang it up.

How long until we see Howling Ninnies ingame? There are BATTALIONS of them here on the boards!
I don't want to single this post out, but come on... Uniforms are called uniforms for a reason, they are not Anyway-You-Want-Them-Forms.
Imps, to paraphrase Henry Ford, you can have any color you want, as long as it's white! You are members of the government remember? They don't WANT individuals in the ranks, that way when you die, nobody knows you're missing.
Rebs, I'll give you that there are Rebel sympethizers among the ranks of AS's, BUT if there was anything that gave an indication who was making a single piece of Rebel Armor, there would be a goon squad pounding on the door to haul his bloody carcus away.

Carry on
See my above post re: game aesthetics. I agree with you... stormtrooper armor should be white only. Stick to the films.
By the same token... Rebels should LOOK like what you saw in the films.. granted, it didn't LOOK like armor, but let's face it... the way this game is set up, armor is required for PVP, and it looks as if that won't change after the combat revamp. I see no reason why Rebels must wear something that radically different from anything seen in the films. If a Rebel character was wearing regular clothing with an existing PSG providing the protection, I doubt we'd hear a peep out of anyone... except Imperial griefers that want to be in "God-mode" andfight Rebelsthat haveNO protections. What I'm proposing has the same effect, just with a more streamlined application.
In fact.... I'd be interested to see what would happen if the Devs put both the SWG-Art-Team-created Rebel armors in-game, as well as movie-style Rebel uniforms with armor prots. 3 of each, tiered out just the same as the Imperial armors. See which one gets the most use. ![]()
