Thread: When NOT to tip a medic

Well, I never EXPECT a tip for anything....isn't that a charge? See definition of tip...

That being said....when I'm in the MedCenter (Bria, Mos Eisley) I will heal EVERYONE that comes in and sits down. And trust me, you will not find anyone on the server that can honestly say I EXPECT tips for my work. There's actually quite a few medics / doctors that call Mos Eisley home and I have found them all to be quite personable and helpful to each other and others.

I do have a macro that says something to the effect of....

( I will randomly heal anyone that sits within healing range of me, and exclusively if you /tip )

Following these self imposed rules, I've made quite a few friends in the game and advanced quite nicely.

However, I feel obligated to say, that if I could single out people that come into the medcenter with the preordained intent to NOT tip whoever heals/helps them...THAT might tempt me to turn a blind eye to them.

After rambling about somewhat unrelated stuff, back to the topic at hand... I still feel that my above point is valid. What you are seeing as completely different really isn't. Keep in mind that some people that play the Doctor class exclusively (yes they exist) NEVER group, the medcenter IS their group. I think it's rather **edit** to refuse tipping if they chose to help you without being asked....sounds like the type of person that would run into the medcenter and immediately go AFK .... just to come back and somehow justify not tipping to themself because the basically never "ASKED" to be healed.

Frankly, I never tip. Nor do I ever expect a tip. I heal in the medical center for XP and converstation. Sometimes people offer to teach me additional skills. I heal in camp because I'm part of a hunting party. I heal in the cantina to repair the Action damage taken by the entertainer I'm watching.

And I made so much money running errands in the first few days (so I could travel off world and by stuff) that I don't need tips.

I don't tip medics for just healing me unasked, willy nilly. They're just trying to get XP, they're not interacting with me in any way.

When I DO tip medics is when we have some interaction. This IS, after all, a roleplaying game. If someone is playing their part in the Star Wars universe medical community, they get big tips from me. I had a guy run up to me and so-called "ninja heal" me the second I walked into town the other day. Never said a word to me. Then he proceeded to follow me pestering me for a tip and getting pretty nasty. I never even responded to him. I came into town injured, and I walked on to the clinic to talk to the doctors there.... regardless of the fact that I was already healed. I struck up a pleasant conversation with one of the medics in training. He asked why I was in the clinic, my health seemed fine. I told him of my adventures... he was very impressed since, being a medic in training, he doesn't see much action. He had lots of questions that I was very pleased to answer. At the end, I thanked him for taking the time to check me over anyway... assuring me of good health... and tipped him 150 credits. He earned it. The other guy that actually healed me didn't. Does that make me a weirdo RP'ing jerk? Don't care. I PLAY the game to have FUN... that's what I'm all about.

Same with dancers... if someone's just standing there in a Cantina, most likely AFK, dancing away for XP, then I'll watch them all day long and heal myself blue with no tip. Now, if that person PLAYS the part and entertains me... with witty remarks, pleasant conversation, or what-have-you, then again, big tips.

I'm an entertainer, and I see tons of other entertainers saying "tip" over and over... I don't know about you.... but I think tips are earned by also being social. When I'm playing my Fizz, and someone walks in or a group... I like to get a little chat going to make time seem to pass faster for them. Do I ask for tips? No, but when you socialize and perform (or heal for a medic), that's when I believe tips are warrented.

Those that take the time to say hello and get to know you while they do their thing.... those are the people that deserve the tips.

Ohh, yes, sometimes.... I'll return a tip. I don't like to see new chars tipping me more than they can afford.

That's my two credits.

Good Call Mani... I'm A HUUUGE Fan of when the entertainers chat me up... I try to tip as best as i can when they do...

Just like when i visit Quebec... If you tell me a tip is required.. I don't give one... But I'm a big tipper.. You just might be missing out on a tip by begging.. sorry gang.

Novice Doctor here, and here's my 2c...

Fine, don't tip. I don't care anymore. I struggled through my young life with almost no tips (except for the generous, rare few), and if it weren't for friends, I wouldn't have been able to train.

That being said, I don't heal for free anymore (unless their a friend, or after a big hunting group I've been in). It takes FAR more resources than what's it worth in crafting time. I only use the best meds, and experimenting on them takes forever, so I don't give them out for free anymore. Here's what I say, WHEN I'm in the mood to make shuttle-fare, etc.

" I am a Novice Dr. for hire. Minimum charge is 500c (more depending on points needed). If we negotiate a price, upon full payment you'll get my full attention until ALL your wounds are healed. I use only the best experimented Meds, and you'll be on your way fast.... contact me if interested".

I then asses their damage, get the payment, and heal away. No one has ever complained after making a deal. Sure, some say "too expensive", fine, you can sit and rest. The XP from healing in the MC is insignificant to me now, at my level. A guy wanted me to heal almost two completely BLACK bars for 200c.. LOL... he said I was being greedy !!! Oh well...

If you can't pay 500c from making 2400c+ on two paralope missions, fine with me now. I can run those two missions pretty fast myself now. I have some regular customers that know the value of downtime, and are willing to pay a small price to not sit. Will you find that training medic that needs xp at low level? sure, but I can have you out of there in 5m, or have him/her heal you for 30+m.... up to you.

I wish the cities I've been in had this problem. you have to beg and plead for healing attention there in Mos Entha, Tatooin and Theed, Naboo (only two I've spent time in worth anything, and consequently the only two I've died near). i've only had to visit the hospital 2 times so far, being mainly a Musician and Dancer doesn't get me out in the battlefield too frequently. But both times (once tat, once nab) I sat there and let wounds heal themselves for at least 20 minutes all the while asking every 5 or 6 if a medic wouldn't mind tending to my wounds, or, winceing, or, mentioning something witty (I think anyway) about all the wounds I had and how a boatload of xp could be earned fixing me up.

Only 2 doctors in Nab there tending to other people in a line already and none in Tat, I tipped in Tat nobody was there to tip. Nab I was stark nude w/ only my black dance shoes and I looked like an old man gettin the paper in the morning...esp foraging .And all the money to my name was on my corpse (I didn't plan on dying and completley forgot my cash was on me...never again will I make that mistake).

The next time I enter a hospital I hope I get bombarded with heals

Sollion, visit Corellia. There is a small group of scouts who hang out from time to time in the medical center at Coronet, and pretty much anybody who comes in looking for healing gets it. We'll also sit around and chat while waiting for Mind to recover enough to heal again, and will often train others in the skills we've acquired. I learned to speak most of the galactic languages there, and also learned some of my scouting and surveying skills there. Also, the cantina in Coronoet is a happening place. Quite busy, with lots of friendly folks.

My bedside manner can be a bit twisted, but I also think RP is important. Often I'll set /mood cheerful, and walk into the medical center asking if anybody's near death. :-)

"I see no reason to tip anyone in the game except maybe somen who teaches you a LVL 4 skill."

So you don't use any resources or time creating Heal Kits to heal people with? You spend HOURS surveying and harvesting resources, or HOURS running missions to buy resources yet that doesn't matter because you get 100xp?

I can see people like you, mostly combat with just enough Medic to be self-righteous about it, saying "Oh, I get XP and I can get money just fine, so don't ever tip medics", but FULL Medics and FULL Doctors use a _LOT_ of resources and time to be able to do what they do. I'm sorry a great many people can't see or appreciate that.

But than again, I'm sure you just use /tendwound to heal wounds without using resources, then go to the cantina to get rid of your mind wounds and don't tip the entertainers there either, coz hey, they are getting XP right?

Bah.

OK, not trying to resurrect this one to be a pain in the butt. I'm actually just taking a stroll down memory lane. I think my response to this thread was the first one I made on these forums. I was proactive and even kept it at the top of my screen for the past year, too lazy to go up and remove it.

After reading this, I was struck by how much the game has changed. It's very interesting reading the discussion herein relative to the threads we see nowadays, for me at least.

Those days certainly were simpler, eh? No buffs, no DOTs, no temploiters, etc.

OK, back to the present, I suppose.

To be honest I think this post is a bit silly.

A tip is between the service provider (in this case a doctor/medic) and his customer. Anyone providing you a service if you ask for it or not is doing you a favor and should be compensated for their time and effort. Now the size of the tip should be dependant on a number of things:

1) Did the medic/doctor cure a disease, poison, stun, intimidate etc? If so they needed to use resources to create the kits that healed you, at the very least your tip should help pay for the medic/doctor to buy more of these resources so that he can heal you next time.

2) Is the medic/doctor leveling? If the medic/doctor does not have a master tag then compensation "can" be the XP that you give them by healing your wounds. However I consider it a common courtsey to /tip these people even if it's a minimal ammount.

3) Did the medic/doctor use wound healing kits?Usually any heals that can cure over 40 wounds in a single use are done with a high level wound kit, which require good quality resources. And again you should tip the medic/doctor a fair ammount so that they can continue to heal you in the future.Broke doctors can't buy good resources so next time you go to get healed instead of getting out of the med center in a few min you're stuck there for 30 min.

4) If you walked into the medical center and it was crowded did a medic attend to you in a timely mannor? If so then again a tip is deserved.

5) Did the doctor go out of his way to help you? this needs little explanation, if he went out of his way he should be tipped.

While resource prices can vary on server, the good doctors/medics have to purchase numerous resources with high PE and OQ. These resources are often in high demand and can cost anywhere betwen 8-15 CPU. If a medic/doctor is spending this type of money to continue to heal the community the very least you can do is tip a few credits.

As a relatively new doctor I can say that in the past few months I've healed over 200 people and have only been tipped 3 times. I never ask for a tip because as I previously stated I think that it's something between the customer and the service provider. However I consider it rude for someone to run around a town asking for help getting rid of a disease and then when you come to their aid they run off with out tipping. And what's more insulting to the "veteran" players is that these tips I've recieved have come from new players of the game. It seems that most veterans with the bank rolls to tip rarely do.It's never been "OK" to not tip service professions, the hologrinders just made it justifyable. As of the last patch it's just not justifyable any longer.

Here's my two credits:

If I walk into a medical center, and I have several people jump me to heal me, I will tip them if I have enough money, if not then no go. I'm sorry, but I don't see the need to tip when you only heala couple of points. Most of the time, that doesn't happen, and it's usually one or two. In those cases, I tip a minimum of 1k, same as with entertainers. Of course, with entertainers, I try to see the ones who are in the cantina proper, and not right in the doorway, and are not afk. Also, novices will get my business faster than masters, just because they need the xp And I don't watch ANY that are spamming for tips. About 90% of the time, I'll get a /tell thanking me for the tip, and that's what matters to me, a simple thank you

I'd have to agree with the orginal poster. Ifsomeone doesn't ask for a heal you shouldn't expect a tip as a medic. I have medic skills and can heal myslef. Often I'm not going to pull my med droid to heal outside a med center, so I go inside. I don't need there aid so why should I tip them for something I can do myself and most likely better. I heal wounds for over 100 each time without assistance of my droid. I always say I can heal myself but you are welcome to if you need the xp, otherwise I am going to do it myself. Now If I am incapped and a someone comes by and heals me I'd feel that warrented a tip or two. Also I will tip entertainers for the most part if they aren't afk. They are providing me with a service I can't heal myself. In MY opinion anyone asking for a heal should kindly tip whoever heals them. Obviously if they are asking they have no means to do it themselves and therefore need your assistance and you should be compinsated. If it came down to it you could always start charging for healing. I did as a doc. There will probably always be people doing it for free but if they want you to do it you should be paid or atleast tipped for your trouble. In the early days, medics/ entertainers were always tipped now thanks to the jedi grind people have strayed away from tipping healers because it has become custom to do so. All I can say if you expect to make money as a medic sell stims or move up to a hybrid like doc or cm. Tipping should be welcomed but not expected for healing wounds, unless it's a healing only a hybrid can do. THen you should be charging.
