Thread: Friday Feature January 21st – Combat Upgrade New Faction Armor
About the rebel helmets again:
I just looked at the rebel pictures again. Slowly I do think the helmets do not 100% fit to the Rebel image we all probably might have (due to the "robotic" look). But I still feel it all looks great (even the helmets except for the face part). But now it's approved, I doubt it'll change. I guess I'll just make up some RP story to myself and then it will still fit in into my own star wars universe.
And should I ever get to play a rebel and should I still dislike the face part then I'll simply go without a helmet or choose a different one. To me as a roleplayer the appearance matters, not the function, even if that means I can get shot real fast.

Oops. Pressed Submit a bit too early.
What I wanted to say was that what TH wrote is correct. Anything officially rubberstamped by the "suits" at LucasArts is canon. For all intents and purposes, SWG is part of the EU.
Actually it isn't. It only retains "official" status. Only the movies are themselves "canon", and the novelizations sub-canon, and cannot be violated unless Lucas does so himself. The rest is only stamped with "official", as being acceptable and part of the universe, but not necessarily to be treated as the end all and be all. To point out how un-canon most of the EU actually is, the prequels outright contradict much of it.
If SWG was truly "canon", then the Jedi aren't anything close to extinct, and are often allowed to publically display themselves without much repercussion. And everyone is a clone. And yet, these contradict some the inviolable and canon assertions of the movies.

I agree with you, but this is where a movie and a game are different. Lucas was trying to tell a story. Visual differences give the moviegoer a sense of what is not said (i.e. Imperials are faceless, emotionless oppressors. Rebels are the common man, with emotions etc). When watching the movie, we are supposed to feel for the underdog Rebellion. In a game, this is irrelevent. Balance and "suspension of disbelief" are more important. I would have been fine with a helmet for the rebels that shows the face, but I would not agree with Rebel cloths = armor.

I don't have a problem with Rebels having armor, I have no doubt that some form of it existed. The problem I see is that the armor here is completely "Anti-Rebel". It just doesn't fit with the theme of the Alliance. It really makes the wearer look robotic, and impersonal. Just like the Empire. I think a key point of the original Star Wars movies is that the Alliance is nothing like the Empire. It's members are real living beings with personalities and emotions. We can see such emotions, like fear, and joy, because they don't wear any helmets that completely obscure their faces.
Irrelevant for some.
Anyways, we are not asking for not having armor, just make the armor more consistant with the theme of what a Rebel would look like with armorin the Movies.
And believe it or not, that "story" that GL was telling in the movies is important for alota players in the game.
Please try to be factual when trying to debate a point.
In this game, the Padded armor helmets, the Rebel Marine Armor/Rebel Recon Armor Helmets, and the bone armor helmets have open faces.
The Tanteal(sp?) (Skiff Guard) Helmet is somewhat open-faced as well.
Come to think of it... the chittin helmet only has a weak visor on the face...
HELLO???
So, yes, the Rebel Helemts in the Corvette from the movies, the Imperial Trooper Helemts from the movies, the AT-ST Helmets from the movies, the Endor Rebel Helmets from the movies (And formerly available in-game) all could serve as armor... and offer greater protection than a bicycle helmet.

Speaking of KOTOR... KOTOR has Republic armor that distinctively looks Star Warsy. Take out all the chrome, recolorplates to something military like olive drab, grey, or white... we've got armor that looks a lot more like it'd fit with the universe and established visual traditions.

So the fact that its mainly dealing with other people matters nothing at all?
If you want to play a Star Wars RPG go play KOTOR or something.

I look at the new Rebel armor, and they actually fit pretty well with how armor would look like if we were to see armor-wearing rebel troopsin the movies. They don't look too haughty taughty like the Imperial armor -- not too high-tech. They look like they were patched together using limited materials that Rebels terrorists would have at their disposal -- down to the soft coverings they use to conceal their faces.
I've been a huge fan of the movies for a very long time, and the new artwork lives up to my expectations.

Im..speachless.
Every Rebelhelm in the Starwars movies has open faces. And you dont see anything wrong with this?
And they dont seem too high tech?
/sigh.
Ok, in your opinion they are ok. But for alot of others, they stand out like a sore thumb.

You brought up an interesting point... shouldn't rebels have an interest in hiding their faces from Imperials? I guess I already got my RP story already then for getting along well with the new rebel helmetsand it would be an explanation why they chose such a (hidden) design.

The rebels are a resistance movement, with a uniform and standing army.
Not a terrorist organization (like many Imps are trying to paint them to be like).
Lets stick to the story, and not try to reflect real world problems into the game unnecessarily.

"More Star Warsiness" does require more things from the movies.
Now, I know that the movies cannot supply us with everything, but the movies did in-fact set the tone for what things looked like during this era.
