There is actually no precedent for Rebel Armor in the Canon and very very little in the EU. We did quite a bit of research and none of the EU rebel armor was anywhere near as cool as the Imperial armor so we worked with LucasArts to get the new armor approved.
This new Rebel Armor is canon now
Trade Federation Viceroy:Is that, Canon?
Darth ThunderHeart: I will MAKE IT Canon.
Really good job here guys, been lookin forward to this stuff for a LONG time

Now THATS FUNNY!!!
Um... the Rebel Battle Armor helmet does look inspired by the helmet worn in ANH if you look closely. So I'd say they did take into account the uniforms worn by Rebels in the movies. And you know what else? I bet you could get a tailor to make you pretty much the exact uniform the Rebels wore on the Tantive V if you wanted to. I doubt any armor they wouldwear would look exactly like their uniforms. I mean, the Imperial's armor looks nothing like their uniforms, does it?

The Rebels did not wear any armor in any Star Wars movie.
And we can kiss-off all Starwarseyness as a result?
At least they COULD have taken into account the uniforms the Rebels used in the movies.
The Rebel armor they have looks BETTER than the Imps ST armor. Thats Starwarsey?

I guess you just dont give a damn whether your playing a Starwars game or not. Thats your option and opinion.
But if they intoduce these armor sets, they might as well go ahead and change the games name.
Because it will no longer be Starwars.
And we can kiss-off all Starwarseyness as a result?

That and take into account that the Rebels are no where NEAR as well equiped as the Imps where. And that what equipment and armor they DID have was scrounged and extremely used and patchey from the Old Republic.
The Rebel armor they have looks BETTER than the Imps ST armor. Thats Starwarsey?
silversaber, could you do me a favor? I do respect your different opinion on this (it won't spoil my happiness on these pics anyway) but please don't make it sound as if you had a big part of the community agreeing with you by always saying "we" instead of "I" (and it never sounds like "I'm assuming we..." otherwise it may be okay), everyone can and should speak for him or herself.

I ment we as those that actually care about the Starwarseyness of the game.
There are more than just me that cares about this, and thus my use of "we" has a validity to it.
I of coarse donot mean the whole playerbase in using "we".
silversaber, then it could be all right... though people couldn't see that difference and might get the idea of meaning half the community - until you explained, that's better now.

Great work, I'm excited to see how this all works out!
To those who are crying "It breaks immersion!", I've got something to say:
As has been stated numerous times in this thread (and many others), certain things need to be changed in order to make the game playable for everyone. Think of what it takes to convert a book into a movie. Things need to be left out, or added to accomodate the medium with which it's being presented.
Just because they're adding something you've never seen in the movies doesn't mean that it breaks immersion. Okay, well maybe it does to you -- But the point I'm making is that you're wrong in coming to this conclusion. If you want to look like the characters in the old trilogy, go get an orange flight suit and a helmet. That's about the extent of what was shown in the movies, no? Happy? Didn't think so.
Should the devs ONLY makethings that were showin in the movies? Should the Rebels ONLY be able to have what was shown in the films? If this were the case, SWG would have gone belly-up within months of it's release. I find your whining and moaning to not only be selfish, but un-educated and narrow-minded as well. The developers of this game have done an EXCELLENT job of making this game playable for the majority of the people. If you're pleasing the vast majority of your player population, you're doing pretty damn good.
Please, if something as small as armor is making your freak out like this, maybe you should go play the table-top RPG version of Star Wars with your friends.
The Movies where the FIRST thing we have seen of Starwars.
They ARE the Starwars Universe. Not the books, or themagazines.
If the Devs are going to introduce new Faction stuff like new armor, they could haveat LEAST taken into account the look and feel of the uniforms and equipment in the Movies.
If they dont, they might as well just take the Starwars out of the name of the Game.
I do believe the designer came up with different designs and they had good reasons to choose the ones we're seeing now.
(hm... I just realized... if they are all craftable then I'll be able to get them all, no matter what faction. I guess I'll buy all armors just to look at them all day.

Silversabre has convinced me! Dev's please remove the ability in-game for Reb's to wear armor. Only Imps should be able to wear armor. This should make PvP alot of fun.
LOL! If so, then make a movement encumberance penalty to the armor, and give the Rebs weapons that can penetrate the armor to equal it up.

Silversaber, I never thought it would come to this, but I completely and utterly agree with you here. This is a really cool Friday Feature, and i'm glad to see that factional armor is recieving such a cool overhaul, but these rebel armor designs scare me. Alot.
My problem isn't that none of these armor pieces were in the movies, it's just that they look so "Anti-Rebel" it's not even funny.
A big thing with the difference between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire is that the Rebels are made up of the common man, freedom fighters that are scavenging for every bit and piece to fight their war. The Empire on the other hand is made up of cold killers with vast resources. Their armor reflects that, the Stormtrooper helmets are very similiar to human skulls and give off a sense of "Don't Screw With Me".
The Rebels on the other hand are very human. You don't see them in the movies wearing anything that is meant to intimidate or frighten their enemies. They are the "human" side of the war. They show their faces in battle so that we, the audience can relate to them.
These Rebel Armor designs make them look like Cold, Impersonal Robots. Honestly, if I was a "neutral" and my city was being liberated by a group of Rebels in the Rebel Assualt Armor, i'd probably release my bowels in my pants right there. They don't look "kind" or "nice" nor do they look like they would fight for freedom or liberation. They look like they've become the exact thing the Alliance is fighting against, militarism, and destruction of individuality.
If this armor is believed to be "official" and available to the Rebels, then why did they not have ANY in the Battle of Hoth where the Alliance was nearly exterminated? If they're fighting for their very survival then I would assume they would use their most powerful equipment, yet we see them wearing their "Hoth" armor. The same goes for the assualt on Endor, for such an important mission you'd think they'd bring out the big guns, but instead they relied on the armor we see in the movies. The key here is that the Rebel Alliance shouldn't have wide access to such heavy armors. They are not a traditional military. They are a guerilla fighting force. I've hoped that the GCW revamp will illustrate the differences between the Alliance and the Empire, but these new armor pictures are not encouraging.
I like the ideas people have come of "beefing" up the clothing style uniforms we've seen in the movies. For example the Tantive IV uniforms could recieve and overhaul, with Kevlar like protections, to provide for a Reconassaince Armor. This can be applied to all the battle suits we've seen from the movies. The Hoth and Endor outfits can be similiarily "updated" with Kevlar pieces to add better protection yet still stay true to the "soul" of the Rebel Alliance.
Please Devs, if you really are interesting in "Star Warseyness" I urge you to rethink these Armor Designs. They just don't fit with what the Rebel Alliance is.
