"Official", not "canon", as Lucasfilms defines it.=)And video-games are usually viewed as being low on the official totem pole. That said...
If you notice, the helmet on the one set of Rebel armorlooksvery much likethe helmets from ANH. (the Rebel Battle Armor)

What Rebel armor did you see in any of the movies?
A New Hope: The rebels didn't really have much in the line of armor in this movie, but they did have one thing: Helemts. Anyone remember those helmets that they wore on the Tantive IV (that corvett Vader borded?) I saw somewhere TH posted that that wasn't armor, and i do agree that the vests, sirts, and such aren't, but the helemt sure looked like armor to me. Be nice if SOE put that in at least, make it a 4th armor type with an imp counterpart, since imperials wore those helmets WITH a type of black armor on the Death Star in A new hope too.
The Empier Strikes Back: Hoth. You see snowtrooper armor there, so theres an alternat version of stormtrooper armor. Then you see what the rebels wear. that looks like a cross between armor and artic gear. Think about it: the rebels aren't going to go around without ANY armor, even on hoth, doubly so with imps landing on the planet!
Return of the Jedi: Endor. its not fully armor, but once again, the HELMETS are armor. Its commando gear, so it's probably got an armor chestplate or something underneath the camo-gear they're wearing, but some of it is also armor.
By the way, your designer wouldn't mind to add shoulder pauldrons for the stormtrooper armor that can be worn optionally, would he?

TH, Tell the art team damn nice job on the rebel armor.
Guys, seriously, GET OVER IT, you want someth9ing starwarsy but how in the heck can you look at pants and a vest as ARMOR?
Lucas Arts has approved it, THIS IS NOW OFFICIALLY REBEL ARMOR! Oh no it doesnt look like the armor worn by rebels in the movies done over 20 years ago!
*GASP*

Because I will have to SEE it.
It will make the Game thats much less like Starwars.
I have seen in the past many Imps complaining that them seeing me kill thier ST NPC's kills thier "Immersion" and the TEFs were put in to remedie that.
Well, having to see this armor in this game as actual Rebel armor will equally kill my "Immersion".
Sorry, but I don't see any Rebel "armor". What I see are alot of guys wearing clothes. Imp uniforms have the same armor properties, should they get armor rating in-game? We want the game to be balanced, and realistic, and where possible, to follow the movies. Since it wasn't possible to accomodate that since the rebels didn't wear armor in the movies, then I think the dev's landed on a great compromise.

Here are some pictures of how rebel troopers are armored in the movies, since the devs seem to be too lazy to watch them:

Please excuse the strong language. Other than that, I am not yet sorry for this rant, as it simply had to be, as I had to vent my frustration with the devs that seem to be eager to eliminate Star Wars feeling in favour of their own disrespectful abominations.
I am probably going to post a more reasonable posting later, when I have cooled down.

The point is this is a MMORPG.
No. The point is, it is a Star WarsMMORPG. A Massively Multiplayer Online RolePlaying game set in the Star Wars Universe.
Seriously, you really want new clothes regarding the fact that many (or even most?) players visited a tailor once in their whole swg life and wear armor all the time anyway? This should be something to think about (I'm adressing the only-armor-wearing people here only).
Besides that, you should be happy about the new armors instead of complaining. Instead, ask for new clothes which are made by tailors.
To the I-wear-only-armor-anyway-people, if you complain about the lack of these uniforms now, you should visit your local tailor. You'd be amazed how much changed after your first and only visit in Summer 2003.
Don't get me wrong. Even as an Imperial I'd like to see the mentioned Rebel clothes in game (as they partly exist already), too. But right now it's about armor, not clothes. Once it's time for new clothes I'm totally sure they'll add that for the favor of all tailors and players.
And to those who believe this is not Star Wars anymore... it is! If you just say "bah they added and approved this" then you would disallow Episode I-III too, wouldn't you? It's not the same as the old movies anymore.
I mean come on, ok, the armors look a bit un star warsy at first (the rebel ones) but there's the problem... you never saw a real rebel armor in the movies so the designer had to think of something completely new.
Personally, I think he did a good job, they look cool and people will be proud to wear it and regarding game fun that's what matters instead of offering a new armor no one wants to wear.
If you still dislike it now, then no one forces you to wear it in game (the old armors will still be there, be happy in your very-unstarwarsy-ugly-looks-everyone-wears-composite).

I still see 1 guy with a hamer tear thru a ST in 30 secs max. That kills "immersion"
I see Rebels hangin out in theed overt. That kills "Immersion"
I see doctors raising my health 2500. That kills "Immersion"
I see Jedis Playing with there force powers in Cornet. That kills "Immersion"
I see every one in armor in the first place. That kills "Immersion"
I take on a tier 5 gunboat and a Corrilian Corvetee by my self and win. That kills "Immersion"
I see equal, if not more, rebels than imperials. That Murders "Immersion"
I see the desert sands of Tat a sprawling city scape. That Rips "Immersion's" head off
And countless others. The point is this is a MMORPG. If everything was doneexactly according to "Cannon" no one would want to play it. In any game based off a movie you have to change things in order to make it playable.
The DEVs realise this, thus they try to make the game more playable by taking away some of the "Immersion". I would say they have done a pritty good job so far at keeping asmuch "Immersion" that is in the game.
I am quite happy with the game right now. I will like it even more with the CURB. I love the look of the new armor. I am glad that it has been introduced into the Star Wars Universe. And you know what? SO ARE 90% OF THE SWG COMMUNITY!
Yes, they HAVE made some sacrafices in immersion to make this game more playable.
But this justsimpley goes too far.
While that have streched immersion so far in the game, this completely BREAKS it.
And 90% of the community is a base assumption.
Lets wait a few weeks until the majority of the playerbase gets a look at this and THEN lets see who is in the majority of opinion.
