Thread: It really sucks to be a casual gamer....

I think I'm of the same mindset of most other people in this thread that "I'll get there when I get there". At the moment I can only play during weekends and holidays making my grinding progress extremely slow compared to the powergamers out there. Despite this fact I nejoy my grinding - that's correct, I ENJOY my method of grinding.

I do the Combat Prowess and Enhanced reflexes grind the "old fashioned" way by making weapon and combat xp with my melee professions - Two master professions will roughlylet you cap your weapon xp on both classes in one buff session if you hunt creature lairs for the sake of xp and will give you some odd 180k combat xp. This converts to roughly 120k FS xp once you convert, meaning you'll need about 10 trips to the village to do a full tree. On top of this you'll most likely earn a ton of money, which will come in handy later, when you need to buy enhancement components for your LightSaber and building your alt character.

I've been at the the FS grind since the end of November and have only unlocked two trees so far and got 4 FS boxes in total - But at least I'm still enjoying the game

I'm not complaining about the system to get to padawan however...

If you think about it, not that it would make much difference I guess, everyone goes and grinds all day long 24/7 (majority of the players on some servers) That means, less PvP, less RPG...well that wasnt really every big in this "mmorpg" anyways. "hey guys, want to go hunting?" "Sorry i'm busy grinding, I won't be able to do anything for the next few months if I want to finish this grind before I die" "bah, see ya." Sorry"

Ok, maybe a bit exaderated but it's true, I want content. Devs said a quest grind, well, that's not really a quest is it? Maybe it's just me but doing a 1hr quest every 3 weeks to just unlock branches you need to grind...well thats not really quest based..its grind based. Before you start the same old shi* to each one of the posts about how hard the jedi grind is, people know that! Some want it to just say they got Jedi, some want it for fun when they log on after hours of work, and if you start the same shi* about working for it, I hate to say it but, most of us have lives, and going to work and coming home and spending your whole damn night staring at a screen does NOT mean you have a life, it means you are forced to go to work because you need money to CONTINUE to play this game, maybe supportinga family as well, but dont even start that stupid shi* about being a working person and unlocking like you say you do because if you go to work and come home and sit on your probably overweight-obese ass and play this damn game every time you have a spare moment you DONT have a life, I can't stress this enough. I've wasted enough of my life on this post, hate to end it.

Uh, is this towards me? Like i said, im a casual gamer that loves starwars.... not a person who needs this game, just trying to have a good time in a game that has not much to offer. Since its the only MMORPG for starwars(that i know) is the only reason i really play it.

slipp. i dont think hitorikibattousai is venting towards you. i think he has a good point and a point i have been trying to make since the jedi craze started back over a year ago with the addition of holocrons. people have lives. they cant (rather shouldnt) play SWG or for that matter any video/computer game all the time and make it their life goal. SWG is a good game to pass the time and have some fun. it is NOT a way of life. jedi is not a way of life. star wars is not a way of life. it is an interest and hobby just life any other fantasy or role playing game. I am a big SW fan myself but i apply my skills and goals towards real life things.

No, I wasn't venting to you, but the public that thinks that, I also agree with what Wicket wrote, no game is or should be a way of life, games are for fun, most people know or should be aware that Jedi is hard, but it's fun to even think you have a lightsaber, as the one poster said above about obi wan and luke, that's all true. They Devs promised a "quest-based" system, we didn't get that, we got another Profession that had to be grinded to lead to another grind profession (the more fun one) this isn't a quest system for jedi, it's work, game's should involve work, but in an MMORPG they need to understand not everyone lives at their computer.

Bottom line, they screwed up yet again and won't fix the problem. They will ignore us, if I got an answer from an actual dev about this that had the cajones to have a debate about it, I may change my mind, but until that good dev comes along....we are just talking to a wall.

Ok...what's this, my 3rd or 4th post? Give me some room to say my peace.

I picked up SWG in Software ECT out at my mall. I was playin JKA at the time and thought SWG would be a nice game to play once JKA lost it's fun value. Boy, was I wrong.

Casual gamers. Like me. I'm 15, have friends, a girlfriend, and like to get away from the stresses of high school, work (yea...gotta save up for that car :smileyvery-happy, and other assorted crap life throws at me.I like playing SWG to have fun. But lately I've seen that SWG isn't fun anymore.

Back when I first got SWG, I was a Scout and wanted to become a Ranger. Never made it there. I realized that I needed combat to get xp for scout. Picked up Marksman and Brawler. Mastered Marksman and tried Commando. Dropped both. Mastered TKM, tried CH. Dropped CH. I was having fun as a TKM, I could take on most creatures and NPCs, buffed or not.

But then I realized I had lost my goal. I was a TKM, can't go farther than that. I hated grinding, from Unarmed I to TKM. Especially the UA IV - TKN grind. So I lingered around SWG, playing off and on until Patches 9 and 10 hit.

Jedi was mentioned in both patches. So I thought, "Hey...I'm a TKM, Jedi shouldn't be too hard to get once Patch 10 hits."

Man...wasI wrong.

I did the Phase I quest for the Captian Susomething guy. Got Ranged Accuracy unlocked. (I was a RM at the time.) I think to myself, "woot, shouldn't be too hard to get that FS xp."

Wrong again.

You see, I thought FS xp would be easy to get, like unarmed xp was once I mastered TK. No...witha 30:1 conversion ratio, I was shocked at the low amounts of FS I was getting. It was hard for meto get NOVICE Combat Prowress. And thats only the beginning.

I wanted Jedi not because I was a casual player looking for something to do once I had finished my earlier goal (TKM), I wanted it because I thought being Luke for a day would be cool. But I have to get on, get buffed, and grind. Grind, I hate that word. It became a chore to grind.

Some say if you can't handle the grind then Jedi isn't for you. Well, I can't handle the grind, so I can't get Jedi. What the heck else is there for me to do? In a world of grinders in places like the deserts of Tatooine, the hills of Dantooine, and even the Jabba spawns inside of Mos Eisley, what else was there to do? Hard to talk to an AFK grinder who's automatically getting xp from a Jabba spawn. I basically played SWG to watch everyone else become Jedi and realise I couldn't ever get it at the rate of the casualness I played.

Sure, if GETTING Jedi was less grind, more quest based, I would probably get it in a matter of time. The grind to BECOMMING a good Jedi would still lay ahead, but I would be a Jedi,I could have fun holding a glowy stick of light that cuts things in two. I would have fun with that grind...almost like I had fun from TKN to TKM. Instead of the feeling of bashing a quenkers skull in with my fist, I would slice something in half with a lightsaber.

But do I think the devs would change the way you get Jedi? Not 0.1%. I've been around for a bit, and I've seen what other people think, and I don't think it'll change.

So...there's my 2 cents...flame me if you want, I doubt the flame will be as bad as the grind.

Hmm well...

Look at it this way - There is no reason to change anything combat related until the Combat Upnerf which means the Dev team is most likely to concentrate on that instead of looking at what's happening in the FS forum and other combat related forums. After all, it is not impossible to attain Jedihood -it's just friggin' hard at the moment. As was posted in the forums in another topic, it sucks harder to be Jedi initiate than FS grinder - yes, you get a lightstick but you suck so bad with it it's hardly worth the time until the devs in charge of revamping the singlemost central aspect of the game are done doing their job.

To be honest, I didn't think my quasi-rant would have generated anywhere near this much activity. I'm glad to see that people do care, in one fashion or another.

To reiterate, I do not think that what is nowthe "FS & Jedi Grind" should be easy, since that is what it has really come to. The point of my post was NOT to ask for such. I just wanted to b!tch, really, and I'm happy some people listened. And no, no nerves were struck. I don't assume about other's experiences, and I expect them notto do the same to me, that's all.

To answer one poster's question, I did not do the Hologrind because I was vehemently opposed to it. It had absolutely NOTHING in common with being a Jedi, even though the almighty Devs said that everything in the game "strictly followed the storyline of Star Wars". Funny...I never saw Luke, Anakin or Obi having to master the Dancer or Chef professions in order to become a Jedi. Did anyone else? (and yeah, those were 2 of my holo-profs. hehe) Towards the end, I gave in to the hologrind because it was supposed to make the village easier. Which, I cannot lie, it did.

And I was/am happy about the village. Even though it doesn't quite follow the storyline of SW, it's a sh!tload closer than mastering 32 randomprofessions was.

My point, and the bottom line, was that if the Devs made Jedi a regular profession, not an end-game goal, then we wouldn't have all these problems we do now. SWG would be a "normal" MMO with different professions each complimenting each other's strengths and weaknesses (assuming the CU works likethey think it will. HA!).

Jedi should not be an uber profession. It should be a profession just like any other, and selectable upon character creation. And yes, I will continue to say this when I do get my Jedi.Of course, this beast that they call theJedi professionhas now gone totally out of control and there's no conceivable way of reeling it back in. I understand this, and all that I have to say is akin to crying over spilled milk, or so the old adage goes.

It just really sucks, that's all. It really could have been better, at least a thousand times over. But the devs had to lie to us, and instead of letting the beta testers do their job and test every profession, they didn't even have the code for Jedi done until 5 months after launch. Really nice, isn't it? Perhaps if they had, they would have realized not to make Jedi an end-game goal..."fun" should be an end-game goal.

Yes, I'm sometimes sour and bitter, and I'm sure most people can understand that. But do not doubt my resolve and tenacity. I will achieve my Jedi. And since one year and six months apparentlyisn't enough, then I'll just have to keep chugging along. I guess there really is no other option.

Let’s look at this from another perspective.

This is a long post but it has a point and pardon the typos and gramatical stuff I'm at work, doing 20 other things at the same time. Think of this as a brain dump Also if you just wanna read my point it's in blue

When I first started playing I started out as an Artisan, I thought it would be fun to make and sell items. I started going through the process and about a week later I had MAYBE 2/2/2/2 in the artisan tree I was just playing with stuff, crafting various items, surveying for resources etc and I thought ‘Wow it’s going to take me forever to get to Master Artisan, much less any of the other crafting professions I bet Jedi is really a pain in the *ss to get to’

I made a few friends and I decided I wanted to be a fighter, Bounty Hunter would be fun so I got the Novice Marksman skill and Novice Scout skill (Back then you had to be Master Marksman/Master Scout to get to Bounty Hunter) I hung out on Tatooine and killed rats and whatever else I thought I could handle. I had no idea what a buff was had no idea there were weaponsmiths that were able to make weapons 1000 times better than the stuff I was getting from the Bazzar much less afford the good weapons.

After what seemed like forever (I wish I could remember exactly how long I figure it was about a month or so of playing) I reached the goal of Master Marksman/Master Scout all without good armor (I made it far enough into the Artisan tree to make a full suit of Bone armor with the bones I had harvested) and without Buffs. One day I was hanging out in Anchorhead looking for a backpack and this Doctor popped in and next thing I know she starts ‘Enhancing’ my stats… I was like ‘Whoah what will this do for me’ she goes ‘Go fight and see’. So I pull out my trusty gun and go fighting and I was blown away how easy things became. No more standing out in the middle of nowhere waiting for my HAM to regenerate.

So then I discovered ubese armor, I had made enough credits from selling the junk I was making on the bazzar and running missions to get a suit, again I was blown away I was able to fight things bigger than I ever imagined and getting pretty decent experience. I finally got brave enough to travel off of Tatooine so Corellia here I come. I see all of these people walking around in this funky looking armor (Composite) and wow I need some of that!

So then someone gave me a holocron and explainedto me what they were for and so on.My first three holocrons were all crafting professions. I mastered two of the holos and I had to do some travling for work. So I spent 4 months on the road without playing SWG. So I come back and find all my resources, vendors, harvesters gone. So I dumped everything and started fighting again. Initially I had enough banked experience so I could get pretty far into the Bounty Hunteragain but I stopped and did some research and thought a melee profession would be fun. The ‘Jedi Revamp’ hit while I was gone so no more Holocrons.

I chose Swordsman, I found a Novice Brawler trainer, two or three buffs later I was ready for Novice Swordsman. I figure it took me maybe 4 days to achieve Master Swords, a few days later I had a hand full of skills in some of the other professions. So now I can get my armor on, get my trusty power hammer out, get a buff and head to Dath and fight Rancors and any other critter for that matter with no problem.

Last Thursday my wife started playing. She wants to be a Doctor. So I gave her all the resources she would need to make Stim packs and stuff so she could heal people, last night she made it to Novice Doctor. She wanted some Scouting skills so I gave her a set of armor and got her buffed, took her out to Dantooine and let her harvest the critters I was killing, Two hours later she had 3/0/3/0 in Scout. So in a span of 3 days she went from having absolutely nothing to Master Medic/Novice Doctor 0/2/0/0 in Artisan and 3/0/3/0 in Scout.

So, the point I’m making is (YES there is a point /cheer), maybe it’s not that achieving Jedi Padiwan takes too long (Sorry I refuse to say it’s hard, its just time consuming). Maybe, just maybe since practically every other profession can be Mastered in a matter of a few days people ‘expect’ Jedi to be achieved just as fast. People have a goal of 'Grinding a profession as fast as possible' instead of enjoying the game. If you think about the process to become 'Glowly' they require you at least to go out and see things that maybe you haven't seen before, do theme park missions that maybe you didn't do because it was faster to just go to Dantooine, kill quankers to get good expereince to level up faster.

I read several posts dating back to when the first Jedi came into the game, everyone was trying to figure out how they did it then that Christmas SOE gave everyone Holocrons then the cat was let out of the bag.

To me, it would have been far more 'magical' if they made acheving Jedi totally and completly random. Think about how cool it would be if you were playing (not grinding) checking out things in the galaxy, helping people kill things doing theme parks/dungeons and all of a sudden you receie a visit from say Luke or Darth asking if you wanted to learn the ways of the force then go from there.

After all, Luke 'bumped' into Obi-wan when he purchased a Droid from Jawa's and the droid had a message to deliver to his owner.

Qui-Gon bumped into Anakin when he was checking out some vendors for a part of his ship.

If this were implemented (Its far to late for something like this to happen) SOE could control the Jedi population and people would actually enjoy the game instead of 'power grinding'.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going through the 'grind' as well as I want to get Jedi as fast as possible, simply because the path is a known path.

So are the developers to blame for the way Jedi is? Yes
So are the players to blame for the way Jedi is? Yes

We have all heard and read what people are expecting with the Combat Upgrade/Revamp/WhateverTheyWannaCallIt. Composite Armor will not be as useful as it is now, Doc/Entertainer Buffs will not be as effective, there will be no more defense stacking etc…

Maybe the Jedi Revamp that occurred is a hint of the changes that will come for the rest of the professions with the Combat Upgrade/Revamp/WhateverTheyWannaCallIt.

Okay I'm done, sorry for the brain dump just another perspective to consider.

You'd be surpised what the devs read. This post probably attracted their attention, but that wasn't my intention at all. I really just wanted to vent that it sucks to be a casual gamer.

Butthe problem we face here is probably true across the board (with the exception of WoW) with any game. The creators/developers need to make the game challenging and arduous for the fastest, most hardcore gamers. Which really sucks for people like me, who only get a few hours a night/week/etc. Truth be told, from what I've read about WoW, those developers came up with a simple yet ingenious system to compensate for that. It's too bad that idea can't be incorporated into SWG.

And Nohoah, you had a great post. It's too bad you couldn't have been here since Launch....you would have loved the wild speculation about what it takes to be a Jedi...with everyone around you being a noob too, it was wicked fun. No one cursed in the game because someone spread a rumor that curses get flagged in the chat dialog, and was negative-Jedi points. And tipping dancers/musicians generated positive-Jedi points, among lots of other things. Once you reacheda certain number of positive points, you'd be visited by a CSR in game posing as a new player who needed help. If you helped them and were nice about it, they unlocked your Jedi. The quest-based ideas were exhausted completely...we formed a semi-guild in the Jedi Forum such that each person would do different quests (or same quest, but different options) and see if that led to Jedi unlock. It was lots of fun, and yet extremely frustrating, not knowing how to get your FS character slot.

Like I've said before, I just wish they could've made the game so that Jedi was selectable upon character creation. At this point in time, it's totally impossible to go back.

Just follow me here for a bit: Let's forget everything we know about SWG right now, and go back to June 26, 2003. At character creation, you can choose Artisan, Brawler, Marksman, Medic, Scout, Entertaineror Padawan (politician wasn't around backthen). If you chose any one of the six "normal" professions, you'd go about your merry life and those profs wouldn't be all that different than they are today (ok, you can remember a bit about SWG as you know it today. haha.) However, if you choose to become a Padawan, then your inventory would be maxxed out at20 items instead of 60, you wouldn't be able to use backpacks (Jedi aren't supposed to 'own' anything, so there should be no need for much of an inventory). APadawan's credits would be capped atlike 20k (again, Jedi ain't supposed to be rich). And of course, they can't own houses or factories or what have you. To craft sabers, obviously they would have a crafting device, but crystalswould be able to bemined and looted. Clealry, mined crystals would be realllll crappy, and high end loots would be gooood.Force skillswould befree to learn from NPC's. And I'm sure we can all use our imagination from there. What I have described here is an organic system that would keep the population of Jedi naturally low. It would be so hard to even begin that only the most devoted would continue on the Path.

Why, I ask, couldn't they have thought this up to begin with?

I do not mean to call for a revolution here - I know as well as anyone that in this game even the squeaky wheel doesn't get the oil. I'm just adiscouraged veteran venting his frustrations and disillusionment.

jedi was never meant to be for the "casual gamer" jedi is designed for the hardcore grinder and hardcore player. hence the huge grind and XP loss and all the other difficulties that go with jedi.

its not supposed to be easy or handed out to the casual gamer playing 1 hour a week.

if you cant cut it as jedi might i suggest a career as a bounty hunter.... only takes a few hours to get that.
