This thread seems aimed at brainstorming ideas tocontrol the Jedi population and/or inserting a method to slow the large numbers of players who are working towards becoming Jedi. But I'm afraid it isn't that simple anymore as this is a serious and complex issue at this point in time.

We should take a look back at the history of the game for a moment and remember what the original idea for achieving Jedi was. Everyone knew it wasn't known. No one had any idea how to become a Jedi and the players were baited every now and again by a Dev posting randomly mentioning some few players were close to unlocking.

(I won't even go into the original concept of Jedi in this game. Such as permadeath and becoming a blue glowy force ghost, or other tid-bits).

For reasons we can only assume to be "player outcry" the Dev's decided to award all the players a christmas present of one holocron to help point people to the path of becoming Jedi. And thus the profession grinding began.

Anyone with half a clue did in fact know, once the path to becoming Jedi was made clear, the information would be turned into a FAQ to help all other players obtain it. This goes hand in hand with the fact this is Star Wars and a majority of people want to play a Jedi.

Some time later and again we must assume it was due to "player outcry" the Jedi profession and the path to Jedi-hood was completely revamped. The path to Jedi-hood became a quest based scenario and we should probably assume the Dev's implimented the phases to help slow the obvious comming increase in the Jedi population. No longer was the path unknown, instead of was actually made rather easy.

Now, let's skip ahead to today. SWG has kicked promotion of the game into high gear with the release of the last Star Wars movie. Clearly this promotion of the game would create a huge influx of players into SWG, nearly every single one bent on playing a Jedi for obvious reasons. And now the Dev's are going to impliment more changes, not directly to the Jedi profession but to the XP gains as well as XP tp FS XP conversion rates, perhaps to slow the march of players into Jedi-hood.

Does anyone see the underlying issue? The Developers of this game have been extremely bad at managing the game and managing the Jedi profession. The Dev's, or maybe it'sthe "Executives" behind the scenes who care about the money, have time and time again made changes to this game that have caused lasting issues.

To me it's pretty clear "they" (SOE I assume) should have known 90% of the player base would want to become a Jedi. In fact, the game should have been designed around it. Jedi should be the high-end or end-game content. The method of reaching Jedi-hood should have never been changed. "They" should have had a plan (and they did) and they should have stuck to it.

At this point in time, I'm sorry, but I personally believe it's too late. There are already thousands of Jedi, full template Jedi, out there in the many galaxies (servers). And sure enough there are hundreds if not thousands more players waiting and working hard to be a Jedi some day.

It's time for the Dev's to stop trying to manipulate a situation that's already grown way out of hand and completely overwhelmed them. They need to either remove Jedi from the game completely (something that we all know would never happen) or just open the Jedi up as a profession like any other.

I would have no issue with Jedi being reached when your "normal" toon hits CL80. Once a toon hits CL80 that's it, they're as high as they can go and are officially end-game toons. So, why not let them become a Jedi? Why force time constraints and endless hours of mindless grinding on so large a majority of players?

SOE needs to just accept a lot of people want to play a Jedi character. Get over it. Deal with it. Stop playing with people's time and money. Let the Jedi be a profession like any other without the need to jump through hoops. To do otherwise will result in people feeling betrayed, punished, disliked, and abused. Actually, most Jedi who went through the trouble of grinding all their professions already feel insulted by the changes.

Thanks for the history lesson. And I agree. I just started a new toon on another sever and right from the get go they give you the idea that jedi is the end result. Littlle hints in the dialogue of the intro quests and npc's you first encounter clearly say that you are special and bound for something special. This tells me that the devs are a little hipocritcal if they are trying to control the jedi populatioon with one hand and all new players that they are meant to be jedi.

Something just isnt right with the current situation.

Just bring perma-death back. This is how it was originaly intended anyway.

This is also why you got the second character slot to begin with (actually, the second character was originally the jedi, while the main character stayed what you were).

I think that the perma-death was one of the dumbest things that ever thought up in SWG.

Heres how it works:

People who are already Jedi say its too fast and easy, because with every new person that becomes a Jedi, they become less and less "elite", if that term can even be applied to Jedi anymore.

People who want to be Jedi say its too slow and hard, becuase their in the process of doing the grind, and they cant wait to be a Jedi.

People who arent Jedi also say its too fast and easy, as they dont like seeing so many Jedi around because its so out of story with SW.

Its pretty much always going to be that way, no matter what system is installed, for the reasons listed above.

Make exit quest more involved, with a failure clause that makes you wait 3 months if you fail x amount of times at completing it. OR make it multi part and have a new part each month for say six months? Current exit quest is too easy, you can grab 20 or so people and it's over in like 5 mins lol

Think about it, you spend months to get jedi, and you die. It's all over, all the hard work, money, and time for nothing besides mind numbing grinding and long waiting.

I couldn't agree with you more, but still, something has to be done. There has to be some way to improve it, even if the improvement is small.

But there are things in place to protect you from those three deaths. It would cause Jedi protect themselves from getting on the terms. Days of Jedi just running around flashing thier lightsabers everywhere would be gone. As it stands now it really doesn't matter.

That is very true, but what if they got killed while grinding?

Well make it that the three deaths have to come from the hands of a Bounty Hunter

Perhaps have it where only X amount of Jedi slots can be logged into at any given time. Say 50 (as an example). Create new servers where these rules apply. So those who choose to play on those server know and understand the score. It's the only solution I can come up with that allows anyone to unlock the slot (with and easy enough badge quest set up) but limits the amount of jedi on at any given time. I also think the extra char slot should be awarded as soon as you are visited by the old man.

To pull this off of course 2 other systems would have to be in place

1) A logged in timer. Meaning you can only have your Jedi logged in for X amount of hours per session

2) A logged out timer. You cannot even attempt to log in with your Jedi till this timer expires.

This way you can curb down the ratio to change XP into FS XP (or eliminate it if FS XP can be earn by another means). You can limit the amount of Jedi on the server at any given minute, and will keep them rare, since a good deal of time your other toon will be in use.

Benefits include

1) The server will never be overloaded with Jedi

2) You won't have to institute a 4 phase training regent in realtime, because of the timers limiting the amount of FS exp you can achieve in that small amount of time

3) The entire server doing the same thing (more or less) can be avoided.

4) The dreaded grind can be reduced or perhaps eliminated. I agree with one poster who stated what Jedi in the known star wars universe got there by slaughtering countless numbers of innocent animals? Sith yes...so perhaps allow that kind of XP to be transfered into a DS pool. Quests to help people, or negociate peace (etc.) can be used for LS pool. At any given time you can draw from either or, or both if you wish to RP a Jedi who doesn't quite know which side of the force he/she wishes to follow. Very KOTOR like, and a good system IMHO

Once you have a fully templated Jedi perhaps a new system comes in place, one that has different limits. Only 5 masters on the server at any given time. Again with timers ike before. Or as a reward not timers at all, but also no ability to surrender any skills.

The concept of rare Jedi's is a great one, but the reality of doing it and not having irrate customers is a tough one.

I doubt muchthey willdeviate from the current system, but I think this idea is plausable. Call it a Controlled Jedi Server.
