Thread: Droid Certs? NO! Make a Pet Skill Tree Never Seen before, something new.
Have you read this idea fully, I honestly can't see how it could unbalance things. You have to pay an XP cost in order to get the droid to improve, not to mention that this idea is for everyone, Not DEs only.
Read over the summations that are dotted throughout the thread, I think you'll find that there aren't any real balance issues
Why didn't mix Droid Cert and Droid Handler prof ?
I explain : a player with a starting prof. can use all droids already available (depend prof) and combat droid to lvl 10 max. And a player with an elite prof. can use a combat droid in lvl 20 (example can be higher or lower).
But each elite prof. can use one type of droid...
example :
A BH or Commando have a lot of firepower, so using a combat droid with high level could be a little unbalanced. So they have access to a droid lvl 20 with high HAM and/or armor, but low low attack damage, to use this droid as a tank only.
A Doctor, Musician, Architect, etc...without elite fighting skills can use a combat droid lvl 20 with medium/low HAM and/or armor, but high attack damage. So they can protect themselves against creature when they travel or explore a planet.
In that case there is no problem for PVP, because if a doctor try to kill a Commando with his droid, the doc's droid have low HAM and can be destroyed by the commando easily and the commando can't use his droid for attack or tank against the doc. So a commando will be always stronger than a doc.
It is a good idea or not ?

How do you guys feel about something like this?
Thunderheart, Anything but a DH class.... please. Options are out there, ideas have been made and said. Please, please make every effort to avert a DH profession!
Im reading and gathering all of the ideas put forth and presenting them to the devs. Keep in mind that a bunch of the proposals put forth the idea of a "mini profession" or adding a droid handling tree to the DE profession which is basically what's on the table.
The important thing to remember is that any proposal has to include the following design criteria if they are going to be considered by the devs:
- Any player can handle any pet or droid as long as its CL 10 or below.
- Any pet/droid above level 10 has to have a significant skill point/experience point expenditure.
- Reference CH's and the fact they have to spend points for an entire profession to get those benefits.
- Factions pets (which could be some droids) will be added at a later date.
Keep proposing good ideas and Drashk and I will keep looking for things that the devs and community can agree on.
Going to try this once more. Droid Certs will work, and here is how ...
Combat Droids:
Assume there are 4 levels of Combat Droids... Light, Medium, Heavy and Jugernaut.
For every existing Elite Profession, place the Certs for each Combat Droid type in the existing skill tree.
However, the Cert is NOT automatic. When you complete a skillbox that includes a Combat Droid Cert, it provides the OPTION to gain the Cert. If you excersize that option, it costs skill points. You can't excersize an option for a higher level Combat Droid unless you've exercised the options for the lower level ones first.
Again, exercising the option to gain the Combat Droid cert costs skill points significant enough that a player could not become a Master Pistoleer, Master Combat Medic, AND Jugernaut Droid Certified.
Such options should have no bearing on the mastering of the profession as it exists, so that if no Combat Droid Certs are exercised, the player can still master the profession without penalty.
How To Implement:
Simply take the currently planned DH skill tree, add up how many points a player would minimally spend to attain a Light Combat Droid Certification, then apply that total point value to Light Droid Certs and insert them across the board within the existing skill trees. A Light Droid Cert might even work in the masteries of the starting professions, like Master Marksman and Master Brawler. Remember, they don't automatically receive the Cert when they hit Master Marksman, but only gain the option to spend the skill point total associated with with Light Droid Certification.
Simply repeat this process for Medium, Heavy and Jugernaut Droid Certifications, bearing in mind that a player will not gain the option to excersize the Heavy Droid Cert until they have excersized the Light and Medium Droid Certs first.
The total points spent to gain all 4 Combat Droid Certs should probably total in somewhere around 65 spent points to maintain balance and prevent uber-templates of duo-masteries plus droid certs.
Utility Droids:
The Certs for Utility Droids would be gained automatically within the existing professions. Each Utility Droid Type within a given profession should match the profession in which it is gained. For instance, a Utility Droid that seeks out the highest concentration of a given resource on a single planet would be a Cert gained automatically by Crafter Professions, somewhere fairly high in the Elite Crafting skilltree ... perhaps even at Master level only.
Certs for Utility Droids should not cost addtional skill points in thefashion that Certs for Combat Droids above would since Utility Droids have little or no impact on combat balance.
They're just cool tools.
Why This In Lieu Of A Droid Handler Tree:
1) It is elegant.
2) It infringes less on a players planned professions.
3) It is manageable and alterable over time.
4) It is fun.
5) It makes more sense, since controlling a programmed droid is far different, and should be far easier, than controlling a wild beast, hence not requiring a seperate grind through a seperate skill tree.
6) It is flexible, and allows for doing fun things like making a difference between ranged attack, and melee attack, combat droids. These differing types can be added over time to fit the profession in which their certs are gained. For instance, a melee profession would benefit from having a ranged attack type of combat droid, and conversely, a ranged profession would benefit from having a melee attack type of combat droid. Recall these benefits all come at a significant skill point cost.
7) It places wonderful treats of utility droids within the existing professions that could, and should be able to, use them.
8) It creates natural market demands across the board for all players for the products of DE's.
9) It is a smarter system rather than the"Here's a new skill tree to grind" system currently being considered.

I like your Idea basically, teh only thing I do not like is, that being a DE I cant use my own Droids, I couldn´t stand this.
I posted on the other TH board but are unable to link this post exactly to my post over there, so just do some copy and paste (sorry)
Perhaps one could melt our Ideas in some way:
(I probably don´t speak for the majority of DEs)
I ´m happy you don´t like a cert-system, that would (only) allow Master Combat-Professionalists, who reigncombat anyway, to use the strongest Combat Droids. Idont see a sense in giving Über-Players additional Überpets also. And I don´t have skill points left to get the ability to controll my own droids this way.
I would be glad, if I, as a Droid engineer, would be able to use my own (powerful) droids. I can´t seeproblems ingiving droid engineers the additional opportunity to be not only crafters but half comatants.
Why not give all Players easy Combat Dorids (LVL 10). And why not split/double the"DH"-Profession. I meanthe skills, which are necessary to controll stronger or more droids , will befound in both professions CH and DE, but they don´t double. - This way crafters, especially DEcould use High-Level Droids by advancing through theDE Profession, Combatants could reach it by learning CH Skills. The "DH" skills are some how mirrored.
This waypeople, who like to get the Droid-Perk have to invest additional skillpoints -> No Über-Überprofessions like MasterCommando with Master Droid is possible -> no unbalancing. Droid engineers could control their own products and have fun in crafting and fighting. And balance between DE and CH isn´t touched, well CH get al little more, but I don´t mind. Well you could put less Skills into the CH-Tree. ))
And by the way, of course I want to see LVL 50-droids, this is Star Wars not Animal Wars. And of course I want to see those Über-Droids in Master DE.

Droids should be different than Critters. Taming a critter for it to be at your beck and call is completely different than buying a Droid from a Droid Engineer that is made to follow your commands. That is why a Certification for Droids should be put in, with the highest droids being used by the DE's (they program em, they should be able to make something special for themselves). The 'experience' and 'skill points' is what the DE puts into it, not the players. Then on down the line, based off skill point usage per class. BH being that highest. The Certs should also only be granted at Master of an Elite Fighting Profession. A non-combat profession should only be able to use what's available now. This will also make the skill points put into Mastering something worth it, while dabblers can still have their way with whatever they want to do, they just don't get that extra bump that Masters get.
Also, making the droids class specific would go a long way towards pleasing the community. Ranged combat professions would have a droid that would help them hold aggro and a Melee combat profession would have a droid that would help them stop those pesky kiting NPCs. The Droids shouldn't be too overpowered. I don't want to see droids level 70 following around someone tearing the crap out of high level mobs. Droids around level 30 and under (again, based on skill points used in a profession) would be the best best. Not too overpowered, but enough to actually be useful. A good bases for this would be the Pre-Nerf Probots, but with a little higher resists and a tad more HAM. They weren't the best thing in the world, but they came in handy every now and then. You couldn't use them to tank a Krayt, or anything realatively high, the extra damage output wasn't all that good, but just don't give them to Novice Marksman, and we should be all good.
combat droids dont fit into this timeline in anything other than an entertainment medium.
i say if DE want to make combat droids AND control them then they shouldnt be able to make anything more powerful than a lesser bol. otherwise make a droid handler profession. it only makes sense. if a DE wants to control droids let em take up droid handler.

not having a droid handler type profession would the same as removing CH and letting BE also tame and make their own pets. whats the difference. the DE cant have their cake and eat it too.

No offence, but this post doesn't belong here. This thread was started to discuss the merits of a system to allow people to use droids. posts that are simply "DEs shouldn't become an uber combat class" don't belong here, we're trying to hammer out a good idea for a system to prevent things like that, and having posts like this, no referenceto or comments onthe system at all, only make it harder to do.
2 skills:
max droid level
Additional Droids.
Master Non-combat professions get additional droid +1 (can't use two level 10 combats because droid level is still 10. In fact, if they have their crafting droid out, they can't have their combat droid out).
Starting droid level is 10
Low Level Combat Droids are lvl 10
Medium are lvl 15
High are lvl 20
Master Brawler/Markman get Droid Level +5
Master Elite Combat Professions get Droid Level +5
Master Droid Engineer gets Additional Droids +2 (for helping sell droids - still limited to lvl 10 combat)
The investment in the droid is the investment to get master box(es). This is the experience/xp tradeoff against the gain from the droid.
For balance, Mob levels may need to be raise a little. master elite boxes or level 4 boxes can required extra XP.
Sprinkle the certs among the DE tree to allow DE's to control higher level droids.
What I think might look cool is to allow, say a Squad Leader, to control 10 (200 or less HAM, no armor) droids. Their nothing more than cannon fodder, but it would make for lots of combat effects and allow DE's a new business opportunity. (Naturally, they have to be cheap to make
)

So... you're proposing that we have to devote skill points to control our factional pets?
