As I said above, some Brawlers might not be happy that their hand to hand skills don't translate into skills at using ranged weaponry, and DigitalOne thinks that it will bring too many people into the profession.


Too many DE's? That's a problem I never thought we'd have...and in any case, this is the only proposal that a) meets the Devs requirements and b) the majority of DE's support. It won't make everyone happy, but as we all full well know making everyone happy is going to be impossible.


If that's all there are for complaints, I'd say this plan was a rousing success.

That is how it is Audio, you called it right.


This morbid fear of a DE influx is worrying a minority of people, and I guess I can't call it a completely invalid concern, but I can say it doesn't worry me at all.


This is a game with free choice in it, what a person does with a character is up to them. Now there will be a few who go from 0040 DE into making BH droids..and thats cool because the things are a pain to make anyway. For those who go the whole way and become fully functional DE's, we should welcome them not shun them or fear them.


Protectionism is always folly. We need to continue to push the devs so that quality matters more and more in droids. As things now stand there is still too much in our profession that in unaffected by experimentation and quality of resource. If that were changed, the good and able DE's would prosper, and the less able would have something to strive for. It should be a world of competition.


That said, its a huge investment in skillpoints for a combat player - too huge to be of any real impact to DE. For existing crafters it would be an either /or situation - something would have to be dropped to find the required extra skillpoints. So an armoursmith transferrs to DE - well so what?


People can't call for better DE content and then try to keep the other players out of the ball park...these games don't work like that and nor should they.


It will end up with most people spending as few skillpoints as possible to get the use of the combat droids, and our profession will be the better for it. The game will be the better for it.



Oh, and Daker - call me whatever abusive term you like sunbeam, it might not be wise to, but you can.


The fact remains that you are wrong, and no amount of wishing and hoping or clouded recollection will make you right. This is the one and only proposal, never seen before. It's not my fault you won't accept facts.

i'm not being funny, but there is NO WAY a brawler who isn't into crafting is going to spend 91 sp for mde in order to get a droid. They possibly would spend 49 to get 0040 to get a phat combat droid instead of 0040 in scout + mch for a rancor - it becomes a matter of personal choice (but not free checkers whatever they are) and if the combat classes decide that maybe crafting ain't so bad then WELCOME TO DE!!!

we will never have combat droids otherwise and all that will be left in de will be some grumpy elite mde's complaining about the profession.

I have read through this a few times and would just like to express my opinion. The variants all sound fair but at the same time to make ranged support a requirement is semi-ridiculous and a little unfair. Yes, by definition ranged support infers tactics, I won't argue that point one bit but my solution to using the ranged support tree as the "crutch" to make it to the combat droids for a DE is this.

Sorry, continuing from my last post.


I think that the 0-0-4-0 is a resonable solution. I hear everyone talking about preventing dabblers. Why should you? If you are a DE who is looking to market your droid and hopefully make this a true money making profession that you would love this. As long as ONLY the certs and none of the droids were in this tree.

I see this and I say well heck let them use their time and skill points to dabble into DE. Why not? What is wrong with half a dozen billy bob kenobi's running around with their very own combat droid that some DE had to MAKE and PRICE. The economic implications for the DE profession would be wonderful. A droid that has high demand because, people can use it. Why allow only us to use the droid. I for one am going to enjoy and work for whatever solution comes around but, why not let anyone who wants to work their way through artisan and into 0-0-4-0 DE access to a fair and good fighting companion.

I hear some guys complaining about no demand, this latest publish I believe created some demand. I also think my solution which is the 0-0-4-0 DE variant will create revenue out the whazoo.

So in closing I believe the 0-0-4-0 variant is by far the best solution. Economically it will be great and I personally IMHO believe that it will add to a Star Warsy feel to see droids running around helping people. So I say let them dabble, let them dabble all they want. Unless they wanna go for the full tree which believe me is a long grind to get too, they will have to come to their freindly neighborhood MDE and get their combat droids. Thank you for reading and I hope my opinion meant something to someone other than just me.

It's because of the criteria the Dev team has (finally) laid out.


Giving these functions to DE's without an additional pre-requisite totally abolishes the idea.


None of us are overly attached to Ranged Support; however, it seems the only logical option.


If they can technically make it so you can have either Ranged Support OR Unarmed IV, that's fine.


But if they can't, that's not a good enough reason to keep combat droids out of the game.

Note: 6 combat modules = total of 6 on the R3. I was saying they just modified the initial proposed module system to make weak droids instead of strong ones.

Darker, I'm glad you are giving up because I'm afraid you are going to have a heart attack because you are getting so darned huffy. You went on ranting for so long there about what Devs do and do not tell us, which is not the point at all, I hope you took a breath.


I didn't forget about the "DE Plan", but the few lines about combat droids did not amount to a proposal of hybirds. It was not a plan. Go read that thread I referenced above - where more than half the people open with, "Well, that wasn't much of a plan..." especially since the bulk of it didn't even have anything to do with combat droids.


All I said was that the Devs never gave us an offical "proposal", basicly just a very early rough sketchin a few sentences of a few paragraphs thatmost people at the time saidwasn'ta "plan" at all.


To this, you wrotea halfdozen paragraphs telling me I was "totally wrong". Who was trying to beat down whom? I asked you for a link with a smiley face andgave my opinion - we never got an actual combat droid proposal. That is why everything is so screwed up right now!


We seem to just disagree on what is a proposal or not - there is no needfor you to go such placesas you have above.


If I misinterpreted your quote to be about Sodan's proposal and it was not, I apologize - but in the end of your first reply you said, "I am offended that you keep asking..." for confirmation of things, when that is the first posting of yours I have replied to in quite some time and I don't think I"ve ever asked you for a link before (if I am wrong I'm sure you will dig it up), and in your last reply you went on about how everyone else jumps all over what you say when all I did was make a simple comment that I did not believe we ever saw an actual proposal.


I'm sorry if you feel people don't like your opinion, but in this case you have projected all of that on to me - stop being so darned sensitive and don't direct your frustration towards me.

I would expect more than few. I feel like some sort of Kasandra, your inviteing a trojan horse! Theres not enough built in defense against so called dabblers chooseing to expand.


What you see as the universe coming to an end is the DE profession becoming valuable to other people. This paragraph sums up another EXCELLENT reason why this is a good plan. It is something that is new and unlike every other profession. A "Dabbler" who expands is no longer a dabbler, but a Droid Engineer. Again, all i see is protectionism. You cant have cool new toys and not share them with other people.


Futhermore this to egregious a change to the definition of the profession, some people do not want to see DE associated with combat above crafting, as it will inevitably become. Toassume abstinancefrom the built in combat functions as a solution is foolish.


Possibly, but there are a lot of fools in this world. There is certainly a portion of the DE base that refuse to make astromechs into combat units. Same thing. No one is going to wake up one patch morning to pull a combat droid out of their datapad that forces them at gunpoint on the next shuttle to go hunting on Dath. The "pure" crafters very well may stay home and craft. Either way "some people" is not "most people". Most people think this is a strong and workable solution that reasonably addresses all factions concerns.


I have nothing against more DEs, but youropening the gates to mongol hoards who will distortwhat we have(and our peaceful way of life Seeit for what it is as a shot in the foot.


Again, a very elitist attitude. Being a Droid Engineer isnt a private club. For the profession to be successful, it will grow. Thats just a fact. Just because people havent suffered as long as the rest of us doesnt mean they shouldnt be welcomed.


There are so many latent functions to this proposal that i canteven begin to see, there may be some thing beyond prediction that could end up harming us aswell. Its best to keep combat out of our profession.


Change is essential however, This is just the wrong direction however.


I suppose change is great, so long as it doesnt effect you. No matter what, if a succesful addition is made to DE, there will be a HUGE influx of players. If DE is made viable, they will come. Just look at BE, when it was broke, no one played it, their class rewritten, they were flooded with new players. Look at chef, there stuff was useless, became totally rewritten, lots of people became chefs. If they had made the Droid Handler, there would of been a flood of people to make the droids, and could cause the exact problems you worry about with a hybrid. Bottom line you are afraid there will be other people and you will no longer be in a profession with only a handful of other masters on your server.


Markets will come and go, and thats to be expected.Markets may change or diminish, but others will be created. Keeping the profession stagnant and undesirable is NOT an acceptable barrier to entry. The dev's want as many people possible benefiting from their code time, not a handful of people on each server.






Bottom line, there are 3 ways to get combat droids


1) Certifications - The devs have said this will NOT happen.


2) New Profession - good or bad this was KILLED


3) Hybrid - The current proposal, and its under consideration


Without a plan we will never get combat droids. Some DE's are happy with that notion. Most DE's arent, and their customers sure as hell want them. So then the question is if not this plan, what do you suggest that fits within the Devs parameters? The last two words being key. Everyone has a plan or idea of what to do, but usually by the second sentence the plan has something that is contrary to the Devs statements of requirements.

Yea, thats a good question. Ive been playing since early august, i have 2 accounts and 3 developed characters, one of which is full combat. I know limited nature of skill points. Nothing has been more irritating. But i also know some things are worth the expenditure.I see potential favorability in achiveing MDE or something short of MDE as part of a desired template. People will do it. My simply stated fear is that this number is greater than we expect. Your lying to yourself to think that people wont do it. And dont think that only Elite combatants will be the ones to do so. I think mostly novices and base professions, people who do not intend to master the whole of a combat tree, andartisan/enterainers/newbies are going to be the ones who willmost likely want combat droidsin DE. And likely candidetes to flesh out the tree. The few-but substaintial amount of poeple with surpluss points will probably spend the points.


Dont forget the newbie/12 year oldwave that will inevitably hit us when a bunch of inexperianced or prepubescent players are attracted by the shinny new battlebots. Theres going to be so much new magnatism to the class, this is intended,butdo have any ideahow many poeple will want them? We'll be the new flavor of the month. Theresbound to be lingerers who'll adopt the whole profession, andquite afew i think.

If theres one thing that cant be allowed to happen, its to stay the way we are, at this point in time we are an absurd rendition of a class, with evidance to thoughtless construction everywhere. Things need to happen.


But whatever happens its ESSENTIAL we retain community, its the reason i chose DE, and have put up with load after load of crap. I sure am an Eliteist, we all are, and have to be to survive. I dont want to walk around the corner and see 100 DEs hocking there wares in downtown corronet, i also dont want to be the only one either. There should be more, but how much is enough? There should be somecatche to MDE skillpoints dont cut it, right now the catches are way to many, and its obvious there detramental. but i think there has to be some way to keep a lid on it. be it as conservitive as it is. (This is all coming from a hippy, btw, im as shocked as you are.)


I see alot of danger in the proposal, things we may not be aware about. Its obvious there needs to be alot of though into fixing DE to make up for the lack thereof during game construction. And i dont want to let some sort of oversight trivialize the profession i love. This proposal theatens to do so. I garantee some sort of i told you so in the future.

Apperently my fears sound groundless. But then again i thought everyone was aware that droids, unlike all other crafting professions, save architect, suffer from the eventual decay of there products. Droids however, with the exclusion of BH droids, do not, once a droid is purchased it belongs to the owner forever, until it is deleted. There is no need for follow up sales etc, once someone has purchased 5 and is satisfied with them. Droid engineers havent seriously suffered from the inelasticity of there products because there are so few MDEs, like 10 serious ones per server, that it dosent make a difference.But i think you might be overestimating the market saturization level of droids should a signifiant level of new DEs enter the workforce. It would take but maybe 50-100 per server(which isnt really to many) DE's to drastically alter the droid market, since satisfaction only occurs once. Even with radically improved droids designed to appeal to multiple classes, after an initial boom sales will eventualy peter out in the long run, eventualy we will only be makeing sales to new players only, and under heavy compitition with not only mastered dabblers, but also people who chose DE because of the boom and the lure of lots of money. Perfect expample the california Tech boom, and patch 7. Eventualy sales will return to levels we have right now, except for the most ambitious of us.


Changes should be conducted peicemeal, of coarse at a faster rate than they are right now, that is if you consider whats happening now as change. Boom and bust is somewhat inevitable given the games construction, especialy for us given the above mentioned reasons. The difference between us and architect, is architects arent a hybrid class, and are already usefull. But look at there economy, its the most unstable in the game, the devstried tofix that afew months ago bysuggesting charged deeds, but that was violently shot down. Would we deal with charged combat droids? That might be a long run solution of done correctly.


Dabblers should be dependanton us,right now repair kits are in the refinement tree, and basic components for them innovice, these should be moved elsewhere should thisproposalgo live, after all can CHs craft there own pet medicine? No, thats what BEs are for.

Small point: all droids have a "condition rating" which decays when the droid is incapped/destroyed. Only DEs can heal a droids condition.


Your point is more true for utility droids that rarely see action, than it is for combat droids might be incapped often.

They have to use droids, therefore the knowledge gained in using BH droids (and the cost of buying them) adds to the Combat droid usage knowledge... The DE0040 skills could be dispersed through out the BH profession or just placed in the investigation tree.... I suggest the investigation Line myself...

Well, the +1 Combat Droid would still fall in Range Support 4. The Bounty Hunters have that. The issue is whatever "skills"/"modifiers" appear in DE 0/0/4/0. Following your math, I would not be adverse to duplicating those in the BH Investigation tree. Lets look at the concerquences of doing that though:


1) By default, a MasterBounty Hunter gets a additional combat droid....which btw, I may not be all that hard pressed to be against doing so. Most Bounty Hunters I know have taken up Creature Handler at some point to help them with the Investigation tree. In fact, this would be a perfect way to incorporate a "IG-series" combat droid that many people would have liked to see. I'm not saying where in the tree that would be; I'm just saying it would be appropriate. Star Wars "Lore" Bounty Hunters often worked with partners. To be honest, Bobba and Jengo were the exception to the rule rather than the baseline. It seems fit that experienced Bounty Hunters get a combat droid "partner." How does this fit in with game mechanics? Just by nature their marks are a bit tough to take out anyway. Most Bounty Hunters I know have taken up Creature Handler to assist in taking out their marks. It only seems fit to me that theybe using droid companions rather than creatures. Possibly you could condense the skills/modifiers into Investigation 3 & 4 (asBH already have increased modifiers in their trees weapons trees already).


2) This gives a small alternative to get combat droids to those who simply don't want to take up a crafting profession. It is more however, more expensive skill point wise(77 for Master Marksman, 77 for Master Scout, 6 for Novice BH,14for Investigation4). These folks also don't have any way to build their own droids...so again, that puts another Bounty Hunterdependancy on us. I'm not sure if they would go for that or yell at us for suggesting this.


3) It still doesn't solve the "melee inequity problem." Which to be honest, I'm starting to think that if a melee character really wants combat droids, they can spend the 29 extra skill points for Novice Marksman and Range support 4. It's not completly worthless to them as they also get the melee/range defense bonuses fromthere as well. Is it the best use of a melee person's skill points? possibly not. I've found people make some interesting decisions about where to spend their skill points.






I see your points here Javelin... I really do, but would it be so bad for the majority of players who do not want to go into crafting professions to be BH's????


My call on this is let them be BH's... I honestly think you will see more players staying in or dabbling in the CH profession them spending thier skill points to be a BH... The tough call here IMHO is CH's going for DE 0040... That would be a lot of Creature power, unless they were capped to CL70 total between Droids and Creatures...


I regurards to BH's dependancy for combat Droids.... What professions wouldn't be dependant upon us the MDE's??? I know that most of my Droid business is driven by the fact that my customers know that They and I both want the same thing in droids...Quality, Utility, Star Wars Feel, and FUN...


And the melee/Ranged balance part (IMHO) is covered by DiLunes post as quoted by Sodan on page 3...

(Had to addanother item. Many many combat people spend 9 SP to get range support 3 anyway for warningshot. They are really only giving up 5 SP to get to range support 4 if that is a requirement.)

Im willing to yeay your proposal provided you consider the following changes.


To shuffle around certain subcomponents in the blueprints tree, and move them into intermediate contruction and production, this includes stim components in novice, raising them a notch into one of the above. This discourages dabbleing further, and rounds off the profession alittle more, since right now the most usefull column is blueprints, the tree is alittle unbalanced as i see it.


To consider reviseing the decay rate on droids, if this condition rating thing is true it should play a larger role in droid combat, perhaps decay quicker,preforably at the same rate as weapons and armor and not just through incapacitation. Droids are complex machines after all, being shot at and hit with blunt objects really dosent make you any younger.


Also figure out a way to implement ware and tear on utility droids, perhaps have modules "break", but instead of having to buy a whole new droid, a droid engineer could repair or replace the module for a service charge.

Right now were lucky, theres no market for droids, this makes the 10 of us per server pretty set as we have close to a planet to ourselves.We're not really ment for competition on a greater level, our products dont reflect uniqueness, improved performance, or any sort of diversity. we need to figure out some way of telling us apart if our ranks are going to double, Think of some viable perks that a DE can use to give themselves some sort of renown, as there is amoung weapon and armor smiths. We are going to enter a bigger scene, how do we prepair ourselves?


These are some big things, like i said think of the latent functions. Thers problems with your proposal sodon, but we can work around them.

OK, that's not so much a concern about the proposal, but the DE profession in general. Seperate issue.

I do not believe this is technically possible. If it was, we would have already had decay on droids. They do not seem to have that much control over datapad objects (vehicles being a prime example - they can't keep them from auto-healing).

Ditto. It's not that I disagree, it's that realisiticly in what little time they would have for the Hybird it will never get accomplished.

Do wereally care about image; there is no way for us to go but up anyway. Yes, I have sold a ton of droids since the patch because people simply wanted something new/different to buy, but people still think of DE as the most gimped crafting profession in the game. I don't know about you, at this point we look so pathetic that I don't care anymore how we look - I just want some dang function.

This was a concern brought up earlier, and I utterly disagree. If too many DE's is a problem, then give me more problems. This is a natural flow of an MMO - you can try to predict and prepare but it doesn't matter. Perhaps your business isn't "meant for competition", but the whole point of an MMO is to develop and adapt. Some of us would have to change the way we do business, no doubt about it.


However, I think you need to start thinking about crafting the way the Devs are. They don't want people to be "An Armorsmith" that is your sole stop for armor. In fact, DE's are already FURTHER ahead with this than most crafting professions; it's very easy to split up DE business (Youmake combat droids, I make utility...") among multiple DE's. An AS can't really say, "You make the Ubese, I'll make the composite..." if they want to be equal partners.


You say there is "no market" for droids, again, I disagree. I've pulled in about a million and a half credits a day since the patch. No advertising, nothing - just putting them up on a vendor and letting people buy them. And I only sell combat droids - I only make utility droids for friends.


With the proposed additional modules in Publish 8, this is pretty much IT for DE as far as function. We were never part of the "grand plan" of SWG - in fact they had to scramble to find the few "utility" modules to throw at us that wouldn't upset their mythical balance; just the fact that they had to have a meeting to come up with new ideas shows we were never intended to have more function than we did, that there were never any slicing droids or survey droids in the works - it just ain't gonna happen in SWG, maybe SWG2.


Without this type of hybird implementation, we will never be more than we are. I'd rather have too many DE's than everyone quit as they have lbeen dropping like flies ately- again, if the two big issues with this plan are a) melee people'shand-to-hand skills don'tautomatically qualify them for combat droid use,and b) it might attract too many DE's to the profession, I think it's a major design triumph.

I don't see the problems with the proposal, I see problems with the profession that go beyond the scope of combat droids. While some of the issues you brought up are indeed important, they fall beyond the scope of this proposal. We aren't going to get brand new decay systems implemented - we are mere months away from the Space Expansion, and this is what little attention we are going to get for quite some time. This proposal is meant to get combat droids in the game, not be a pancea for the whole profession.

I think we will have to do this, if nothing else to ensure that someone cannot become "self sufficant" in terms of combat droids without taking something from each of the branches

Well, we do have what is an effective decay rate for combat droids in the form of "Droid Vitality" ("Systems Condition") which we should be able to craft tools to fix. As you have a MBE character could you provide some information on BE vitality packs (How much vitality they heal, is there a decrease in max vitality, what levels or resources are required to build them in comparison to pet stims). We should be able to work out a middle ground that allows a droid to deteriorate quickly enough to have resale value, but not fast enough to enter the minds of combat players as being limited use.


Also if we are going to have vitality pack that isn't as effective as the BE equivalent, then we may be justified in getting improvements in armour "for balance"

I would have to say I'm against this, if for nothing else because of the psychological impact on the customers of seeing a well defined limit on what they're buying

It's not the quickest at this point. It's the only. They simply do not have the time to implement all those systems you proposed.


What we need is an absolute conclusive fix to the profession. The Devs dont have all there lives to cater to us. If we're going to do it, we need to think long term.


I think you are missing a key point here : the Dev team is satisified with droids. They think they did a bang-up job with them, have "bent over backwards" for us (exact quote). They are perfectly satisified with CL-10 pets like we have now, and leaving it at that until well after the Space Expansion, if ever.


Droids were NEVER meant to be more than they are now - especially in terms of utility. When we said, "WE WANT UTILITY!" they had to have a meeting to cobble together a few ideas for modules that add little real utility (the exception being the barker module).


DE's have been under the false impression that we were unfinished in the Dev team's eyes, when in fact they just saw us as slightly broken and needing a little more to fill out our schematics (hence TEN entertainer modules...).


Those systems you propose simply are not in the realm of possibility unless they halt work on everything else.


I also think you are missing the point that if this is gonna happen, it's gonna happen soon. This isn't a casual development discussion, this is an 11th hour (and 58 minutes no less) proposal that is already likely too late. We are hoping it is not, but adding the systems you desire would mean "no" for sure.


Droid Business is good, now that im the only one on Three planets that plays regularly. But the way it is DE's cant take competition, you might think of compeition as co-operation, the Devs might think so too,but thats not the world they created. We sell inelastic products, you might not sell utility droids, but alot of us do, utility is one of our core functions. As it stands our droids are the conclusive purchase. Does the term market saturization mean anything to you? Publicity is one thing, i wouldnt have a problem with new DEs if our class could support it. But our class as it stands and the way our droids work is like a very sensitve eco-system. Add more DEs & usefull productsand you eventualy have more people with droids than there are people who need to buy them. I dont dissagree with you, we need function and more DEs would be fine provided we can handle them. Droids arent going anywhere, even with incap vitality loss droids must still have a substantialy long lifespan. Another resourse are customers, think of themas one time satisfied customers, once they have 5 or less, they aint comeing back besides for maybe stims and batteries.


I don't understand where you are going here - this is about combat droids not utility. I understand that many DE's sell utility droids, but this is about combat droids. And my example of cooperation was simply that, an example. It works well for many, but it is but one of the only ways the business would need to change.


What you are talking about above is great - but the thing is, it's what we already have. These are issues that we all desperately wish would be addressed but you really need to understand that our "time" is just about over, and simply not in the cards. I don't know how to explain this any more fully; I understand your concerns regarding decay/etc., but right now it's a choice between what we have now and combat droids. It's a great wishlist item, but this proposal has been about reality since the begining.



I might be the only one but i think image is essential to our profession, it might be more trivial than function, but its certainly worth tending to. Its a role playing game after all. Theres a cetain fluid embrace of a profession based on pre-disposed recollection. If this is left unclear you dont get as devoted players, and devoted players are always a good thing.



Image is great, RP is great, but what we need is functional products to sell.


You can roleplay that you can make Droidekas, you can project an image that droids are powerful.


But that doesn't change the rather sad state of the profession.


People have been Devoted DE's since beta - have you seen the amount of people posting good-byes to this forum (Woody, Virt the most high-profile)? The writing is on the wall; unless the Dev team miraculously implements this plan, this is it for Droid Engineering. It. Finito. The End. This will be the profession for the forseeable future.


I'd rather have combat droids than benothing more thanwe are now. You may not be convinced of that, but most of us are - the difference is, you can change your image and your roleplaying of the profession; we can't make droids more useful unless something drastic is done.


The future of droids is rather bleak, and I'd rather it be bleak with Droidekas than nothing more than it is now.

OK guys So far we look like we are making progress... What other info/work do we need, and please please please can we try to get it done "chop-chop" (overbyte thats one of my favorite phrases...lol)
