Thread: Droid Update!: The situation with the DE Hybrid proposal and CL10+ droids (04/02/04)

I'm sorry, but I just can't buy their "A hybrid solution can't be balanced" when there's a blatant hybrid profession already in the game proving exactly the opposite, the smuggler. If a hybrid DE can't be balanced, then why does the smuggler profession exist cause it obviously can't be balanced either according to the DEV's logic.

Get 90% of us behind the Droid Commander solution that the DEV's have always intended to do from the beginning despite anything we come up with? Well, the way that is gonna happen is by replacing 90% of us Droid Engineers. Which is basically what's going to happen. The Droid Commander solution will be hashed over by a whole new generation of wet behind the ears and completely green Droid Engineers. They will unknowingly recycle all the old and flawed ideas. Nothing new will be generated but they won't realize that. They will eagerly pop out the same ideas over and over again like its something new never proposed before because they won't know better.

At this point, I wish the DEV's would just go on to work on other professions and never come back, not after the Space Expansion, not ever.

It's been clear to me for a while that the Devs have never really cared about Droids...blatant lies notwithstanding. I'm ashamed to say I took it back up just after P8...but my rational was that I have 2 accounts, and like it as a crafting professions. WS/AS is too dang resource intense, Chef too competitive... and dang it, I bought my first box to be a damn DE!! So I have all my stuff busted out and gathering dust. I make a coupel combat droids now & then for kicks....but I'm pretty much just running a single factory on componenets for "one day". I really shoudl just drop it again and take up BE or something.

Its about as old of a saying as you can get, but it applies so well.. Actions speak louder than words.

If the Devs truly cared about the pathetic state of DE, they would have put more time into us. But no, they would rather fix Jedi. Heck, Politician is screwed up pretty bad too, and its a brand new profession. At least the poor SL have a date to look toward now. But DE never gets satisfaction. I am *REALLY* looking forward to the Fan Fest.... /emote slobbers over the thought of sitting in a room with JustG and RUnesaber

I just might get kicked out.

This sucks why does the "Real" Star Wars Professions get a back seat while non Star Wars Professions get all the attention? /sigh at least we get neon hair and more lip colours with Publish 8 (the mind boggles)

p.s: Are C3-PO Droids going to help us speak/understand other languages in the new patch?

The whole "Condoms break, deal with it!" way of looking at the hybrid proposal isnt helping. We have a learning experiance here. As of now we know what else Dosent work which is alot to learn in one day, but if only we had the exact reason why, we would have a better chance of building the next set of ideas. Of coarse the hybrid idea is dead and gone, but its anything but pointless to drop the subject. When you find a dead body, you dont just bury it, you perform and autopsy on it. We need the "Corpse" of the hybrid idea from the devs to take it apart and learn from it.

I'm hoping you're not serious on that. It'd be a good idea to stick about to see what gets to TC for Publish 8.

They let us sweat buckets over Sodans proposal for weeks and weeks, and now we get the news that it is a no-go.

It wasn't that...it stuck about because the proposal was strong enough to warrant the thought, discussion and serious consideration.

Look....don't you think they would WANT to code the 'answer' that 90% of DEs reporting to thread said was the way to go? It's not a 100% endorsement from every DE in the game but it's a high number.

Don't you think they WANT to give us that (if for no other reason than to make us all just shut up)?

If it could have worked, they'd have taken it and run with it (or put it in the schedule, anyway). Now we have to go back to square 1, true. However, I do intend to seek some more official guidance on how to 'get there'. A big set of considerations and 'rules' to follow. It really does look like DC is likely the best answer, since they already know it will most closely achieve the balance that they are after.

That being said, our real 'charge' now is to make THAT proposal in a way that 90% of the DEs can agree with and make it ours. Build it into a cool profession of OUR making.

I know there are a ton of creative, knowledgable people here that very likely could come up with a lot of ways to make DC not just be another metallic CH. I know it. That's why having to walk away from this and get the best answer (that has a chance of passing) in front of the Devs. It's the unity of the DEs behind whatever we put forth that's needed.

NEVER, and I have played a lot of these OL games, NEVER have a community been so abused.

Or a Dev team so abused either.

Though it wont be popular, TK you have to say NO to this decision. Resign if need be, They cannot find a DE correspondant who would agree with them and that would be a massive embarrassment.

You'd be surprised. They've gone withouta Corr for some profession or another before in the past. There's no reason to think they wouldn't continue that if they had to do so.

If someone was interested, I'm sure they'd step up.

Please, for the love of DE resign.

Ya know...I was just sort of getting started, Shian. You didn't even let me get warmed up and you're booting me out the door?

Is this your vote of no confidence in me? Don't think I don't push, Shian. I do. Next week, TH will be able to pick up more items since Q-3PO is back in town. I expect we might start to see some of the P8 info roll and such...but that's just a guess (not an announcement).

Nobody else will get support, nobody else who matters will even stand, and then they have a real problem.

Someone will stand up.They always do. And, I'm sure there is someone else that could likely get support to be honest. There's a few people I can think of that I think would be able to step up no problems.

For the slow minded, I'm not criticizing TK, but to be unable to get a DE correspondant to step up is a mighty blow to SOE, and they bloody well need it..

See...this only hurts us though. Not having a Corr at a time when issues lists are being updated/revised and scheduled leaves little in the way of possible work for DEs. That's not what you want, is it?

We need a Corr, Shian. Me...someone else....anyone. Going without only hurts us all, not helps.

Grr, I really really didnt want to drop this profession, and now I'm going to have to.....it makes me sick.

Why are you going to "have to"?

I ask in all seriousness....

Thanks for the update TK. I haven't been able to follow Sodan's proposal as much as I would have liked to, but from what I saw it looked good, but perhaps too complicated for the non-droid saavy public. At the very least, maybe it'll spawn some other concepts/ideas on both the community and developer ends.

So we're looking at Droid Commander again eh? The real question for all of us then is, do we want to be come the Bio-Engineers to our Creature Handler counter-parts? I'm starting to look at it this way - if I can stay a primarily droid-driven character and become a viable combatant through a new Droid Commander profession, then DO IT. I would be willing to drop some of my merchant skills and start sub-contracting with a Master Artisan for electronics to get the necessary skill points back.

BUT - if the droids are not going to be good enough to at LEAST match up to Master CH pet abilities (and there are balace issues there, relating to pets buffability and not being able to on droids for example) then don't waste the development time.

I do have a question though - when all the talk about Droid Commander was going on, didn't Runesabre come out and say that he didn't think adding another profession was the answer to our situation??? Was there a change in direction there? Some other realization? I've been finding it harder and harder to log in lately, and while I have some fairly big real-life issues going on that might be contributing to it, I know part of it is simply feeling frustrated with lack of direction...I really hope we hear more about Publish 8 SOON.

Thanks TK, keep up the good/hard work!

Curses on them, may they reap what they have sown.

Disgustedly

I just can't agree with you on this Shian - I don't think it'll be a wake-up call, I think it'll be the final loss of any voice we may have. Every profession thinks they are the most important (understandably, but we ARE more important IMO because droids are 8/10ths of what Star Wars IS - but that's why I'm a Master DE )...if we lose our only real channel of communication, they have PLENTY more on their plates. I admire them, pity them, and am frustrated with them all at the same time, because I know what goes on in trying to get A to talk to B to talk to C which relies on DEFGHIJKLMNOP all working correctly.

All I can say at this point is BAH...I hope the Space Expansion fires things up a bit.

TK, do you not see the dozens of good-bye posts posted in the main forum, or those in this thread?

Do you not understand how some people feel beaten and abused?

Oh, wait, you're "elevated" as you say now - I guess you don't understand how the "little people" feel.

And you expect us to be happy with standing in line to get another slap in the face, to say, "Thank you sir, may I have another?"

Shian, although you are right, we all know that the only way TK would actually stand up for the community in this matter would be if they tore his cold, dead hands from the title. This was his goal all along to be a correspondent (anyone that has ever read any of his posts knows this), and as we all saw it changed his "tune" literally overnight - we lost any hope of the correspondent people thought they nominated.

It is clear it does not matter to him that so many people see such a huge problem and are quitting, and he seems just fine with that - hoping in vain that possibly some day they will come back.

TK is the only one that could tell the Devs how truly bleak the situation is - it's a shame he is blinded by his title and will not step up to the plate.

AO, I read a lot of posts on these DE forums, but I don't often post any more. This on the other hand is uncalled for. He's doing the best he or any other correspondant could be doing, and as others have stated many times (more and more often lately unfortunately), "Don't shoot the messenger." It does no good - a good chunk of your own posts I'm sure do nothing but irritate the dev team because you rarely seem capable of posting without a slight jab at SOMETHING going on. I'm frustrated too, we all are, but this is unnecessary.

I believe the comment your talking about was that adding another profession at this time when so many needed serious work wouldn't be a solution. We're looking at a much longer time frame now, after the space expansion (so probably early next year).

That may be what the statement was Jenden, thanks. That would fall in line with the extended time frame as well....<sigh>. The problem with MMOs is just that they ARE so massive. Creating all this substance from nothing takes time, and I fear that by the time the game gets closer to the vision of what it CAN become there won't be a population here/there to financially support it.

A few TheRealTK421 quotes:

"Yup....TH is getting a post from me today to get an ETA on the In-Con and In-Dev threads." 4/2/04 9:03am

"The Publish 8 list is already pretty well locked and the issue you quoted is a totally new gameplay request. Two different things entirely." 4/2/04 11:41PM

"Next week, TH will be able to pick up more items since Q-3PO is back in town. I expect we might start to see some of the P8 info roll and such...but that's just a guess (not an announcement)." 4/3/04 12:33PM

This tells me all I need to know.
We had no In-Concept threads on droids.
The In-Development threads on droids were a nice intro, a copy of the patch notes, and ringing developer silence.
The Publish 8 list is "pretty well locked" and therefore there are going to be no more droid engineer improvements.

TK - why are you even bothering? There's no point. Time's up! We got our love and they are moving on to another, erm...'partner.'

We have discovered that the Droid Invasion finally gave a good reason for Droid Lubricant to be in-game though. You figure it out. (Ouch! I just wish the Development team had used more of it!)

TK here is a short version of the 4 branch hybrid....

Branch 1/2 pre-req is brawler or marksman one tree at rank 4

Trees include such goodies from the original DC proposal as doen by drashk

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=droid_engineer&message.id=57023&page=1

the cnahes i suggested where to remove the 10level thing and instead have a branch 1/2 only be do-able up to rank 2, with the pre-req for rank 3 in any tree

here is a link to where i did ome work on this:

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=droid_engineer&message.id=58983#M58983

what it boils down to is a system that requires some master artisan skills and some combat skills to be a master DC. theskills drashk suggested dont require much modifications just updates to sp's cost and costs for the skills themselves.

hope this helps...

I am both happy and sad to hear this.

I'm happy because I had hoped this would be the answer. I do not believe that the hybrid proposal was balanced or that it was our best option. However, it had a tremendous amount of support from the player base so I was worried that the Devs would cave in and "do the wrong thing." The fact that the Devs also see that the hybrid proposal wasn't the right answer is a strong positive for me. It gives me hope that there may still be a chance for us in the long run. (Slim and shrinking, but a chance nevertheless.)

I am sad to hear this news because so many people supported it and believed in it. I do honestly feel bad for all of those people, especially the people who put so much work into it. Sodan did a very good job of coordinating and guiding the effort. His enthusiasm and positivity (is that even a word?) were infectious and really focused the majority of Droid Engineers toward a common goal.

Doughbacca, we need guidance from the Devs. We have proven over and over that we have the enthusiasm, energy, and creativity to produce ideas. However, we cannot continue to produce ideas in a vaccuum. We need better guidelines than "no new checkers" from the Devs. It's a neato catch phrase, but it means vastly different things to different people. We need to know what constitutes an invalid checker and what constitutes a valid improvement to our profession.

Furthermore, we need to know what is allowed as far as utility is concerned. We already have droids that enhance skills - medical modules- yet we're being told that droids are notallowed to enhance skills. We already have droids that expand upon existing abilities - item storage and data storage - yet we're being told that droids aren't allowed to expand upon existing abilities. We have given the Devs pages upon pages of solid, workable utility module ideas, yet we have received virtually no feedback on them. If the ideas aren't workable, we need to know why so that we can avoid making similar mistakes with other ideas. "Technological limitations" is not a good reason - far too many of us are programmers (some are even game programmers) and can smell that load of bantha poodoo coming from miles away.

I'm still playing, but only because WoW isn't out yet. SOE still has a chance to do the right thing, but they're running out of time.
