"and yes, I did read a large number of the books. The Thrawn trilogy, Shadows of the Empire, etc."

I vaguely remember Vader himself sparing against some combat droids even in Shadows of the Empire.

There's a huge difference between personal combat droids and droid armies. Personal droids, or even small groups of battle droids are definately accounted for in this timeline. What's gone away are entire droid armies, that has certainly been something that is not acceptable in the "current" Star Wars timeline.

And even IF everyone had 1 droid in the game, it still wouldn't amount to a droid army.

I want to be both. I want to be able to sell anything I can make, and I want to be able to use combat-type droids to assist me when needed. I don't see these as mutually-exclusive.

I think there are really three possibilities here, not two; no combat droids, combat droids that can be used by anyone (like level 10 pets), and DE only combat droids.

Giving us the ability to craft combat droids won't make us a combat profession, anymore than weaponsmiths are. Does anybody think we shouldn't be able to craft combat droids at all?

That being said, I don't think giving DEs a combat droid that's more powerful than the ones we can sell to others, one that's for our own personal use will inhibit the crafting side of the profession. On the contrary, without such an option I need two multi-class into a combat profession to round out my character. If I had a dependable combat droid to aide me I could reduce my reliance on combat professions and spend those skill points for Master Artisan or something else.

Its in the artisan tree and it should be a crafter only profession. We should provide combat droids (new ones please) to the combat classes. However, I think we should the ability to control an extra droid so we can have a power and repair droid out. If possible you can limit this slot to be only available for certain droids (such as power).

I missed the earlier posts as I had a busy last two days at work so let me respond :

I agree with Sinistra's post. But I would prefer time spent on DE to be divided between about 50% fixes on current bugs and 50% development on new combat droids and droid features.

The dev's DE plan was highly underwhelming.

Ideas:
I want new droids for combat and new uses for existing droids.
How about making one of the BH droid chassis into a survey droid.
How about a droid that tends harvestors.
How about making the protocol droid except programmed messages which he will then shout out ala the vendor style vocal advertising.
How about turning the heavy load lifter (which currently doesnt do anything) into a package delivery droid. Program it to go to a coordinate and give access via item or data storage to someone. (can it act like a vendor too?)

I think what people are refering to in general is DE's dont want to be the only ones to be able to handle specific droids. They dont want to fight and have to make a droid that only they could use. Imagine a commando that can make his own guns... that is exactly what would happen to the DE profession. no sence at all.

We want to make things that other professions need.

Non-DE perspective....

1) Allow everyone 1 combat droid.

2) Allow DE's at a certain level an extra combat droid. Provided these droids arnt the end-all in pvp/pve, this will keep the dabblers out of the DE, while still giving the DE's a boost...and keeping customers.

Combat droids do exist in the movies in this time period (IG-88 bounty droid comes to mind.) along with the extended universe so this is not a point.

I would like to have a combat droid, it's more STAR WARSy than all these creatures that destroy frame rates in Coronett and other cities because the Creatur Handler Zoo/Circus is in town.

I personally think that the amount of creature pets in this game is the single biggest "non-Star Warsy" thing we have at the moment.

I'm in the crafter camp. We get to DE through the artisan tree (like armorsmiths, weaponsmiths). Armorsmiths(AS) and weaponsmiths(WS) have no AS-only or WS-only crafted items. Why should DE be any different?

I DEFINATELY want combat droids, but I want to be able to SELL them to other people. Being able to use them myself does me no good. The whole point of being a crafter is to craft goods that other people want to buy, and what people want to buy is Combat Droids.

If I had a credit for everytime I've been asked "Can you make me droid that will be good in combat?", I'd be rich.

I think we should be able to make lots of different combat droids, but that anyone should be able to use them. Droid Engineer should be a crafting profession, not a combat one. It would be cool to grant Droid Engineers perhaps one or two extra droids out at one time, of any type, but make lots of other professions get profession specific bonus droids, too. And make all of them able to have combat droids... and maybe even let them have a combat droid in addition to another pet. Let crafters have a droid out that has a crafting station module... let medical types have medical droids, let entertainers have a droid to play some music (and let them heal battle fatigue away from a cantina). The latter ones, you've pointed out, change dynamics of where people heal, but that isn't really the case. It changes where they heal themselves, and where they heal group members. But there will still be people sitting in medical centers waiting for heals and sitting in cantinas, and if they want tips and/or experience they'll hang out there.

The original poster has a good point from a roleplaying perspective. From a game play perspective more types of combat droids are needed. The gameplay is mostly combat orientated. We dont want blaster modules in mouse, treadwells, and the R series. We would like to see Droidekas and other types of combat types droids found in the Star Wars series craftable by DEs. The addition of these combat droids can only be benefical to the market in general. Assuming we ever get the option to make combat droids it will be a personal decision to make them or not.

I believe that all classes should have the ability to have combat droids, including Droid Engineers. Droid Engineers should be able to control both non-combat and combat droids, since they are masters of crafting droids. I believe that Droid Engineers should be able to have at least 2 non-combat droids out at one time, but only one non-combat if they have 1 combat droid already out . . . to help with repairs.

For non-DE, there should be some sort of certification to be able to use droids, but possibly a certain profession could be given special abilities to control more than 1 combat droid at one time. Maybe along Squad Leaders be able to have a single combat droid, but allow them to control other combat droids within the group, up to 3 . . . just a quick thought.

As a non-DE I don't have the dedication to read through the entire DE forum (I only got here by following dev posts), so I don't know what's been covered. But since my impression is DE's want a more saleable product, and many would like droids to be more present and significant in the game, I really hope there's an effort to also ask all the non-DEs what they want droids to do.

And in my case, as a ranger/rifleman, my wishlist would include combat, but not necessarily the "tanking" model. I don't need a droid to dish out death aka droidekas, I do that myself. But if, say, a droid could be used strategically, say to
  • draw off attackers or break up groups
  • induce states (dizzy, stun) or posture changes
  • loot corpses for me when I'm still fighting
  • warn me when a mob's about to aggro
  • administer buffs I've loaded into it
...then THAT non-uber-death-machine would be the combat droid I'm looking for.
