Thread: No combat droids, please
I think our biggest fear is that if some really great/uber/31337 combat droids are introduced into the DE line... and the only way you can use them is to become a DE... we're going to get a huge influx of players taking up DE _just_ to have access those droids.
DE's are crafters. We (most of us) enjoy being crafters. Many of us also enjoy fighting. So, if there's a way to institute some kick-ass combat droids without restricting them to the DE class (e.g. add combat droid certs to the appropriate combat professions) I think that's what we'd all like to see happen.
That's the concern as I see it. We don't want to become another dabbler class, like what you've seen with CH's.

Droid Engineering is an _Engineering_ profession, much like architects and weaponsmiths. It should not be a combat profession, in my opinion.

What are your thoughts?
I've suspected there may be a need for another profession. The Droid Engineer would remain a pure crafting profession, and the Droid Controler would be the combat profession similar to the Creature Handler.
I also realize that there would be a lot more time and effort involved in making a new profession, but it certainly is beginning to look like it would keep a lot more people happy than trying to keep both groups in one profession.

What's the problem with keeping droid engineers as the utilitarian merchant class and adding a droid handler profession as the mechanical parallel to the creature handler profession? This would make droid engineers to droid handlers as bio engineers are to creature handlers.
I don't know if you're going to get a consensus on this one. There's some rather strong viewpoints on both sides of the issue each time it comes up.You certainly can't give powerful combat droids to everyone, there needs to be a certification system in place with a cross-tree skill setup like the new ch tree or the current complaints about CH will just shift to DE (unless all the combat droids are just kept weak in general). There's also been vocal opponents to creating something like a 'droid handler' class, but that'd be rather far down the road if it were to happen anyway.
I know when I first purchased the game my vision of the DE class was of a 'Droid Handler' type--I'd thought they'd be able to build anddeploy droids in combat(before I actually dove in and got the details). Gathering info from the other threads about more types of non-combat droids is a good start....but trulypowerful combat droids I'd think would *have* to be restricted to DE only. Anything available to the general public can't really be any more powerful then the soon to be revised non-ch pets or it defeats the purpose of revising said pets.
Just my thoughts...

How about adding 'helper' skill classes.. Like add some more smaller type classes like
Droid Manipulator.. make it cost only like 30 skill points and then the tiers let people use droids as fighting pets. As you use your bot you gain skill in this.
DE should not become mechanical creature handlers. Make the profession unique and interesting through new schematics and interesting combinations, not through the ability to command mechanical hordes.
It should be a crafting class, please.

i am posting this all over the place...
DE master 3 droids out... (three combat for all i care)
anybody 1 lvl 10 droid out
novice ADVANCED class a higher lvl droid...
somewhere in those columns should be higher lvl droids...
at master of those classes they get a higher lvl droid cert and a +1 (two combat for all i care)...
no more than three droids out no matter what though!
do this...and you have yourself STAR WARS and are moving away from pet wars.
I will DROP my CH skills in a heartbeat and focus on my main class if this happens!
*Notes that most ofthe "crafters only" thoughts come from NON-DE's*
TH, when deciding things for our class please try to take most of it from those that are actually in our class.
Here are my thoughts...
Smugglers create spices that are illegal, right? Well, make combat droids "Illegal" as well. Perhaps if a player has one out in town, maybe have the local guards jump him/her.
Combat Droids should not be certed to simply Droid Engineers. The Droid Engineer is a crafter pure and simple. Move past that. You have quite a few more skill points you can spend to be a warrior of some sort. No you won't be as good as a pure fighter class with all points spent on combat related skills but that same combatant wont have your ability to make money or items that you can.
Combat droids are a must...if for no other reason than to stop the tide of beetles, gurrecks, and whatever CL10 pets replace them. Droids are Star Wars....Pets (not including mounts) are not.
If some type of droid user is required then fine make a class called Droid Handler that can use two or three droids, requires master droid engineer, and the ranged support line in marksman.
But a crafting class should not inherently get combat abilities. This goes simply to game balance. Btw I am fine if you turn that on creature handlers and have long supported that why they are controlling their creatures they cannot attack with a seperate weapon.
