At the same time an either/or approach would be cool. Grinding to 0040 DE with DE crafting exp OR combat droid exp might be cool.

Is Combat Droid Exp required to climb the Ranged Support Tree in Marksman (under this proposal... it's obviously not true currently)?

I can't decide if that would be appropriate or entirely sick and twisted given the current (patch 7 Droid Implosion) state of "combat" droids.

No, its not. But its interesting to CONSIDER allowing people to climb up 0040 DE with EITHER cobmat droid exp or DE crafting exp. (There is no such thing as combat droid exp right now, to be clear).

Yeah, I don't see any harm in a) creating a new form of experience for using combat droids, and b) allowing that experience to apply to the 00X0 tree of Droid Engineer alongside regular Droid Crafting experience. I would be more interested in allowing it to be used for the Ranged Support (000X) tree of Marksman, though,so that low-level Droid Engineers could use their <CL10 combat droids to help climb that tree.

It might also be cool to have the R3's new ranged attack "unlocked" somewhere in that tree, should this proposal be implemented.

Creature Handlers earn experience that they need by using their creatures. Seems to me that people who are trying to gain access to higher level combat droids should be able to (if not required to) do the same thing.

(No, you haven't turned me to the Dark Side! I'm just sayin it might be cool IF this happens. )

I have some questions, dont know if they have been answered already, my appoligises if they have.

1) You will need to craft your way to Novice DE to able to start using combat droids. What does crafting have to do with using a droid?
2) If more crafting is needed to advance in the 00X0 tree, same question as above applies.
3) If pure "droid handling" xp will be used you are forcing pure crafters like one of my accounts to basicly master marksman first and then use a droid to climb that skill tree to be able to master DE. Why?
4) Why even propose solution 1 and 4? Are only ranged attackers fit to use combat droids? Are the idea of the combat droids to be pure tanks and the brawlers dont need that?
5) Why no variant for putting the +1 Combat Droid in Novice DE?

I dont think the hybrid is a good idea, I dont like the idea of limiting the use of droids at all. A droid and a pet are very different to me. A droid knows all the things its capable of and only needs someone to tell it when and where it should do it. A pet on the other hand knows nothing and need a quilified teacher to learn everything. Thats why we should have skills for being able to control higher level pets, thats why we should NOT have skills for controlling combat droids.

But, if there is NO way that the free use of combat droids could be implemented, I would like to see the +1 Combat Droid in the Novice DE box. I think that proposal is missing and I would have liked it to be among the others. It makes no sense to restrict the use of combat droids to fighters. If I as a crafter needs a bodyguard I would like to able to buy a combat droid and get Novice DE to use it.

Btw, I didnt mean to attack you or the proposalwith my post or anything. Just wanted to know. If the post is regarded as aggresive it might be due to the lack of time from my part.
I think it really great that something is being contructed and the vote post is one step in the right direction. Still misses the choice for the +1 Combat Droid in the Novice DE box.

I read something about guidelines from the devs in another post. Anyone that has a link to these around?

Understand now that my questions might be out of the arse since the proposal probably follows the guidelines and all my questions dont but since I didnt have this info before I didnt know.

Ok, in response to jedichuck's:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and before you hop on with the "no discussion here" like you seem to have done over and over ...........DON'T! It's not fair to ask an opinion and not allow anyone to explain why they think the way they think. So don't expect to get simple yah/nay answers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You could very easily post your "agree" or "disagree" and then provide a link to your discussion on this thread. It's not, as you might call it, rocket surgery. I realize you are probably pretty young, but you'll find defiance for it's own sake is a waste of everyone's time especially your own.

Secondly, in responseto your very good point that states:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

/disagree

Droids are programmable NOT tameable or trainable. PROGRAMMABLE, which means that whatever their program says they should do, they should do it regardless of who tells them to do it. I should NOT have to get DE skill boxes to control any droids. If I want to build, even repair them, then sure I should invest in DE skills..........but NOT to own and operate one!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would argue that even though droids are programmable, why is it that very few characters (if any?) have combat droids under their control? No stormies are running around with Droikeka on their side. If everyone could control them, why don't they? Are they too expensive? Maybe. But if you made them cost 10,000,000 credits in SWG, you'd make money the main factor in power....and well....that's just too much like real life. And if you made them like pets that didnt require skills, what would that do to the balance of the game? WHY on EARTH would someone spend all the GRUELING hours leveling CH??? Only people that wanted to role play the part would dabble. I spent all that time leveling CH because I like badass tanks. Wouldn't even considered it if I could buy a 40-level droidika. If you let everyone have them, then EVERYONE would HAVE TO have them just to be able to defend against them, thus cluttering every single battle scene with them.

I am VERY interested to hear to other side your attempts at refutation of this. Please reply directly to this message.

Well since you have been so nice about it I'll try to help you out...then when you read the whole thing it will make more sense.

1. Somehow we have to ensure that skillpoints are used up in order to allow the optional use of combat droids by the general player base..SOE has said so. (that is the reference you will see to 'no free checkers'

2. See above...skillpoints have to be spent somehow.

3. The use of skillpoints so far described is a natural expenditure for a DE anyway on the journey to MDE, the 'droid handling or combat experience skills (from Marksman for example) is done for 2 reasons.

One, (if you want to use combat droids) it is more skillpoints that must be spent (free checkers cannot be had-see 1) This isIF and only IF that aspiring MDE also wants to be able to use Combat Droids.

Two (the opposite case) If you prefer to be a pure crafter you dont have to spend them, and can go on your merry way to MDE as normal without ever killing a thing. You can craft and sell the droids, but you would not be able to use them.

4. Brawlers would obviously not be excluded, but that is a matter of tweaking the proposal. The point of this is that some form of combat experience is deemed to be required to be able to function in a combat situation, and is not of itself relevant to the principles being proposed, which all relate to skillpoint expenditure.

Whether you like the idea of limiting the use of droids or not, SOE have clearly stated that for balance reasons there will have to be limits, and those limits translate into skillpoint expenditure. There is no way they are prepared to offer any combat ability free (free checkers again). Skiipoints must be spent-that is not debatable.

Now you know that, your last paragraph is answered already. If you want to use combat droids, you have to spend the skillpoints. There IS no way that free use of combat droids will be impemented. SOE has made that very clear.

Hope this helps your long read.

Okay, I will give my own opinions on the answers here, and I am not trying to be facetious.

1) You will need to craft your way to Novice DE to able to start using combat droids. What does crafting have to do with using a droid?

If this question is leading, then I also have to ask what combat has to do with using a droid? What does exploration or hunting have to do with training pets? The prerequisite does not necessarily dictate all of the abilities of the elite profession. Or, lets just say, doesn't have to. I would venture that a logical benefit of crafting would teach you how to maintain and operate complex machinery above and beyond giving simple commands.

2) If more crafting is needed to advance in the 00X0 tree, same question as above applies.

Same answer, then. With the addition that the crafting XP would further your skills toward Master DE.

3) If pure "droid handling" xp will be used you are forcing pure crafters like one of my accounts to basicly master marksman first and then use a droid to climb that skill tree to be able to master DE. Why?

This question has been answered. In this proposal, combat or droid handling XPwill not be required at all in order to craft droids of all calibers. You add this ability in order to take full advantage of the hybrid.

4) Why even propose solution 1 and 4? Are only ranged attackers fit to use combat droids? Are the idea of the combat droids to be pure tanks and the brawlers dont need that?

Now this is a valid question that I also raised early on. In one variant of this proposal, any level 4 tier of marksman or brawler would work. Some concerns about placing the cert in a static location, apparently, and the nerf-shy began the snowball support for placing the cert at ranged support IV.

I am a brawler, so obviously I don't want ranged support to be a prerequisite. Not only that, but the droids aren't necessarily ranged fighters.

5) Why no variant for putting the +1 Combat Droid in Novice DE?

This proposal is centered on DE becoming a hybrid profession. That means we would have to mix in some skills besides crafting in order to gain the full benefit of the elite profession. It helps validate some of the questions you had before. What does crafting have to do with commanding droids? What does combat have to do with commanding droids? Ah, but if you know fighting, and you know crafting, perhaps you know the best way to buildyour creations, then sendthem at the enemy.

This is in direct opposition to the wishes of the developers, though. Although your logic is sound enough, there just isn't any way that we can convince them to provide useful or powerful droids to the masses without checkers. Or something like that. So why not have it so that the ones who build them, and know every inch and inner working, also command them. It makes as much sense, if not more, than many ideas floating around.

Again, there is quite a bit of strong opposition to this idea. I wouldn't mind it so much myself, but you can use any other hybrid profession's skill prerequisites as precedence and follow that basic structure. If it is hybrid, it means you need to learn multiple disciplines as prerequisites.

Hope that clears some things up.

Thanks alot for the answers both of you.

I read an idea about buying a droid controller for faction points somewhere that you then can use to control droids but the whole "skill points must be used to control droids" rules this out too I guess.

Would have been pretty sweet othervise and I had a whole idea of my own going based on this...
