Thread: Please explain to me how Droid Handler is a bad thing.
GamerX, I really doubt yera DE. If you were you would not even be postin this.

There shouldn't be a droid handler class for the same reason there shouldn't be a vehicle hanlder class, a building handler, or any other stupid thing.
It is certainly possible to balance this stuff without making a class for every single item in the game. A CH has the advantage of a) getting their own ceatures for free b) being able to keep their creatures for a nearly indefinite period of time and c) haveing a creature with almost 0 maintanance.
What would haveing a droid be like? Well, a) droids are costly to obtain and vary with demand, b) will need to be replaced many times from breaking, and c) the need to buy power etc to keep it going.
Combined with the other ideas you have a balanced system. So how is Droid Handler a good thing?

to get those droids, players have to spend the time and energy to earn them.

Isn't that what the Cert system would do too?

Yeah, its called being an MDE since summer.

Ok, so far I only got one guy wanting an Uber Profession. Still waiting for a Valid reason why DH Hurts or ruins DE.
DH hurts DE because it allows them to forget about making DE a useful and fun class to play. To be a good DE, you also have to be a master Artisan, so there go many skill points. Now try also being a master DH because you want to use the droids you made to fight with.
Anyway, it makes no sense. If you can make a droid, and program it, why wouldn't you be able to control it? Droids are not unpredictable creatures needing some special skills to tame and handle it. It's like a computer. I don't need a degree in computer engineering to run MS Word because the programmers at Microsoft made it easy to use. (Let's try and avoid starting any anti-MS rants here please).
Any decent DE will be able to make a droid that can follow the simple directions of "kill", "Follow", and "stay". I mean come on, the devs at SOE did it in this game, and now anyone with their permission can control a droid, right? Unless some crazy DE is selling droids that don't do what you tell them without some strict training and constant control like an attack dog needs, there's no reason to have a DH profession.

<<You also can't give strong droids to any crafters. That would be the same as to give them, let's say, pistol skills. >>
Why not? why can not anyone in the community who earns the money to buy one, not be able to use it? If, IRL, I were to earn enough money to buy a Ferrari, I could do so and be able to drive it, not having had to take a "Super Souped Up Neatest-Looking Car" Driving Class taught by Mario Andretti first.
I personally don't want either the DH separate class OR a certification system. As stated above, if a DE can make it, and I can afford it, I can buy it and USE it.
I'm a MDE on this account, but a MCM/CH/BE on my other account, so I'm speaking from both sides of the issue, not just as a DE.
A Cert System would be interesting but....why would they do that? Ok, so a Pistoleer gets what, a level ## Droid that a DE can make. So now a Master Pistoleer gets a Strong Pet to tag along with him in fights, and your Creature Handlers are like "Huh?"
Some of you have said "Now I gotta give up Artisan" No you dont, your not forced to be a DH, you can still be that Super DE you want to be, you just cant use the Heavy Combat Droids....Why? Its very simple if you think about it. I said this once but I better say it again. Does the US Army expect the people who build a Battle Tank, to drive it and use it in Combat as well? No of course not, a Tank Commander handles that cause hes trained in that type of thing. A DH who deals with deadly Heavy Combat Droids makes perfect sense then. DE can build it, but hes not trained in the ways of combat to use it as good. Just like a Weaponsmith, he can use a flamethrower, but no where near as good as a Commando can.
We are not going to be allowed to make Lvl 30 Droids to sell on our Vendors to Novice marksmans. DE is not going to become a Crafting/Combat Profession. If DE could not only make Heavy Combat Droids, and use them too...you better believe most players would go that way. Look, I wanted the fantasy of building combat droids and using them to kill stuff too, but you cant take and take and take, you gotta give too, and in this case if you want to use them Uber Droids, you gotta give up skill points.
Explain how it is a good thing to restrict droids to a certain class? Where in the movies did you see anyone even resembling a Droid Handler? Droids do not need "handling". They are programmed to obey commands. They could maybe need a reprogram every now and again but why wouldn't an Engineer be able to do that?
From a game design standpoint, what sense does it make to develop a completely new profession when so many others are broken? Take time away from existing professions to make new ones? That's unfair to the broken ones.
