Thread: Can someone justify DE only droids?
WHAT JUSTIFICATION IS THERE FOR DE ONLY COMBAT DROIDS??????
Reason: People want to min-max as much as possible.
Justification: As a DE, you are almost required to have MA as well to craft any of the upper level items, as such you have few points left to spend throughout combat skills. Thus, in order to minimize point cost and maximize power-gamers, we should get a combat droid.
Just because you don't agree with the reasons/justifications given doesn't mean they aren't valid. I, personally, dislike the idea of a DE only combat droid. We aren't a combat class, nor are we any more "special" than the other crafters...so why should we get a huge benefit above them?
I wouldn't see any problem with DE being able to receive extra commands (special attacks?) for use with droids (combat or otherwise). The main argument I've noted going around is that droids are like computers and anyone can use them once they are programmed up with specific commands/responses. This is true, but I can assure you that if I gave my laptop to my mother, she would be able to do much less with it than I am able to. Why? Because I use computers everyday, I build them, program them, and tweak them on an almost continual basis and am thus more qualified/able to work with them.
Yes, power-gaming is always fun...being the most powerful and having all the benefits without getting any of the drawbacks is neat, for a little while. But that's not what these games are about. It's not about being able to be the best at everything all at once, there would be no challenge to the game. I have only died on harvester runs twice, and I've been playing since release (didn't do beta). Before you even say it, I place harvesters on Lok, Endor and Yavin IV as well, so I'm not just avoiding the high risk places...I just know how to be careful and take care of myself when I go to do harvester runs. We don't need a DE only combat droid. We do need to be fixed however, and being thrown a little "We're sorry" bone is always welcome, but other professions are broken as well...we aren't special in that regards.
here is my justification http://www.imagedump.com/index.cgi?pick=get&tp=17584

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. but seriously I dont want to take the time to write a page to explain why i want a MDE only combat droid. there have been pages on this subject before and im not going to take the time to find them and cut and paste just to get rid of one BE here, when there will just be another one(s) in a week.
"Does requiring MA to be a self-sufficient DE justify having more combat prowess than your sister classes."
Its really an open ended question and broadens the scope of my original question. Like do doctors deserve the same treatment under these circumstances? But thats something to ponder over the next week or so. Like I said though, its gonna take time to think about it. Balance is never an easy thing to get right (just look at the CH class). Thanks.
Any other justifications or is that one the only one?

Actually Eric, you answered the question beautifully. There really isnt a justification for you, just a want.
/sigh, there really are too many newbs forcing change in this game.
Justification #2 (was in my paragraph previously): Droids are complex pieces of machinery, as such, an expert in the field would be able to use "more powerful" versions and get the greatest performance out of them. An example would be, again, computers. As a computer programmer/engineer, I am able to do things on/with a computer that many others are incapable of doing. Now, you'll say "Yes, but the others can all use the computer, so that doesn't justify getting a DE only droid." To this I would respond, "Think of Operating Systems, a computer illiterate person would not be able to use a non-gui version of Linux, where-as I could. Thus, even though it is part of the computer, it is limited to who can use it"
Justification #3: We create them, we program them, we control what they can/cannot do. As such, why wouldn't we be able to make one that requires a certain skill level to be able to use, or ones that only we, as the creator, could use? Yes, BE also make "pets", but it's different in that you don't program them or teach them what to do (i.e. in the organic realm, just because a farmer can grow vegetables doesn't mean he knows how to cook them properly).
Oh, I agree completely. If we were living in the reality of the Star Wars universe where I had my own little droid engineer shop. I'd be tinkering away until I had the perfect combat droid to help defend me, but we don't like in that reality even in this game. We live in a reality where the other crafting classes should have the same kind of perk. They should have something that they can use to defend themselves as well.
I just don't think this a door the developers should open. Once we are given this every other crafting class will demand, and justifiably so, a combat perk at master. Sure, if we get it, everyone should.
