Thread: Droid Engineers should comand droid armies
DE = Droid Engineering...not Droid Squad Leader or Droid Combat Handler. The purpose of engineering is to design andbuild products that others will use. Thisdoes not mean you are excluded from using your personally created items, but it does mean the skills used to build the item and use the item are, in general suppose to be separate and distinct. For example, just because a master weaponsmith can make powerful guns is no indication as to whether he has the skills to use those guns properly.
DEs need to be able to controll multiple droids, its just what their abilities are.
MDEs should not be stronger than MCH, they shouldn´t be a pure combat proffession, but they should get some combat abilities as they need to spent alot of skillpoints in their proffession.
Multiple droidsis not only multiple combat droids, it also enables the use of multiple support droids, a DE can provide a group with a med, a crafting and arepair droids or other droids at once so theyare usefull for groups.
Droids should not be tanks, they should be weak but mainly using ranged weapons (while CH pets are mainly meele pets).
DEs should not have only one skill, most classes have special abilities slicing and stuff, so DEs should have more abilities than using a crafting tools to make droids. at least one droidtyp only for DEs or aability on droids only DEs can useor the ability to use multiple droids to make DEs diffrent from a new player without any skills.
BEscould aswell be able to use up to 3 pets and a total cl of 30.
but its a totally diffrent issue, a DE builds the droids brain and its program, so they understand droids more than any other. BEs clone a Pet but dont have any knowledge to controll its mind. there could be an extra Droid controller class aswell but that wouldn´t make sense as DEs are masters in droidcontrol.
i dont care how it will be solved but i care that it will be solved
Sometimes I wish that combat oriented things weren't as popular. IE. Probots were great at combat so everyone wanted those, now creatures are great at combat so now everyone wants those. I think this game makes real strides to try to break that perception by having such a variety of professions but it's going to take more to shift players thinking.
BE's and DE's cannot be compared because creating a living organism that thinks for itself and creating a machine that you program how to think are completely different, a DE's intimiate knowledge of the droid and its functionality would allow it to function better as a droid handler. A Droid Handler class would not make any sense, all knowledge of the droid you can have involves its construction and programming.
Being able to have multiple droids out does not necessarily mean they will be out for combat. I'm working on Merchant / DE. If I could get multiple out I would use them for patrolling to advertise for me. Using the words "Droid Army" in the subject though does hurt this subject a little. I beleive letting a DE call more droids just like they can store more droids in their datapad is a logical step towards improving our profession.
The limits of droids you can control or pets you control are simply game rules, do not read in to them as some sort of realism. There really should be no limit on droids since they are machines. Why would they disobey you, assuming they are fully programmed?
As a droid engineer who is disappointed at the profession I must agree with almost any enchancement that will be made to the profession. I agree that being able to call multiple droids would be great, people would love you in parties because you can call droids with all sorts ofcrafting stations which they can use in crafting, and medical droids.
As for the armies, droids have been 'nerfed' as combat to the extent that they are considered tanks, 3droids*50dmg would be ok, but still not great damage. However their tanking abilities would be noticeable.
This change would definitely help our profession and its in no way overpowering or disruptive to balance.
My reasoning for multiple droidsis for support droids. Also, I'd like to have more than the generic 5 droids in the datapad. I'd like to be able to show customers what each of my droids looks like (currently impossible).
As already said, multiple Probots is hardly unbalancing. But, I think the multiple droids should be reserved for Droid Engineers.

I definetly think that DE's should get to controll more then 1 droid... We cant even charge or repair our own droids at the moment since we can only take out one at a time....

Thank you! you are probably one of the few people that understands my point.
I DO NOT WANT DE TO BE A COMBATE PROFESSION that was a second idea i threw into this thread that i should have left out. i changed my mind and i think its a dumb idea.
my point is exactly what Nelus said, "a DE builds the droids brain and its program, so they understand droids more than any other..."
and knowing how teh driod mind words and how it can be manipulated or contorl should give the DE the ability to call and comand 3-5 driods at once.
DE build droids right? well why shouldnt they be able to comand a small army of them?
I doubt very much if aircraft mechanics or engineers can fly combat planes too effectively from their skills. I also doubt that computer engineers make the best programmers. I don't see why a Droid Engineer makes the best droid combat controller. If anything, I could see multiple droid control with a stipulation on the number of active combat class bots (thus allowing auxillary bots to remain out). I personally want to avoid anything which heavily pushes our combat aspect (like tripling firepower from 3 Probots), given that our total profession package has alot for non-combat but would love more than 1 non-combat bot active at once.
I brought out a probot and a DZ70 droid the other day, (I only did this once -- I just wanted to see how it worked. I won't tell how I did it.), and I thought they worked great together. It looks like the two formation commands do work. When I gave the command for column formation, they fell behind me in a column, and when I gave the command for 'wedge' formation, they appeared to be aligned slightly askew. We attacked some low life animal lair, and they worked well together. I would be quite content to go into battle with 2 or 3 Probots by my side. The more, the merrier. Since probots have been nerfed -- Why not?
