Thread: No combat droids, please
We are crafters, not fighters. We should get our fighting skills by training in marksman skill boxes, not by screwing with the proffesion. I like to fight, so I'm a 3,2,3,3 marksman. I'm also a Master Artisan, 3,3,1,4 DE, novice scout, novice medic, novice merchant, and I still have points left over. I will eventually be MA, MDE, MM plus a novice merchant. I see no point in DE only combat droids, as a matter of fact I think it would cheapen the poitns based proffesion system in the game. We can't have everything, we have to make some choices and sacrafices. 250 points is more than enough to make a well balanced character.

There is a real seperation of thought here...
Some want DE's to be a "crafter-only" profession while others want the "combat/crafter" mix...

The separation isnt that simple, in fact:
- some want DE's to be a "crafter-only" profession with no combat droids at all.
- some want DE's to be a "crafter-only" profession with combat droids usable by anyone
- some want DE's to be a "crafter-only" profession with combat droids usable by anyone with a certification system (to be determined).
- some want DE's to be a "combat/crafter" mix (that is with combat droids usable by DE's only)
The (1)population isreally marginal.
(4) dont fit in the DE / artisan tree and is all about dabbling (same as most CH).
So the real debate, imho, should be between (2) & (3).
I'm more in favor of (3) cause (2) was proven unbalanced (aka pre-nerf probot).

I don't want more combat droids. The probot is just fine.
If you introduce more combat droids, it should be for everyone, not just Droid Engineers

Combat droids should not be confined to a combat players only, Crafters need protection too. I think the best way of distributing combat droids would to place generic certification in all elite professions for combat droids and not give any one particular profession access to superior droids.
This is a problem seen in the CH's, they have access to superior 'weapons' in the forms of their pets so everyone and their brother flocks to that profession. Granting everyone access to droids levels the field so no one profession get''s a glut in power.

Well, see here's what I'm reading -- Droid Engineers want to be able to craft things that are more combat effective. That's the thing. I think if I'm reading the majority of the opinions here that most of the people who are calling for combat droids want to craft those droids, then use them and not have them get mulched in the process. So to extend the analogy, this isn't a matter of having the Weaponsmith be able to use every weapon he makes. It's a matter of making sure that the weapons he provides work in the manner in which he intended for them to work.
For my part, I feel that the only way to look at Droid Engineers is as a crafter-only class, which strictly speaking they are. There aren't any weapon skills that come as part of the class. That would pretty much, by definition, make it a crafter-only class. Do I favor combat droids? Certainly. Do I think that certain droids should be limited to Droid Engineers? I personally would like to have a benefit or three to making it to Master DE. Do I think that Droid Engineer should be changed to some "crafter/combat" hybrid? Certainly not. DE's are crafters; they make things. How combat effective those things are is the question that needs to be addressed.

If I may ask, why do you want a combat droid? Or, if you're a DE, why do you want everyone to have them? What is your reasoning for this?

It goes further than that.
There are DE's who don't want us to be a combat profession, unless you force on us the idea of "droid handler" as a seperate class. In that case, we'd want it to be intergrated with the DE profession instead.
It goes back to the fundamental pet problem. If the Devs insist on requiring certifications on droids (seperate from the non-combat # of droids out at once), then we want to be part of them. Most of us would simply quit if there were a Droid Handler class, in the vein of the BE/CH relationship.
Many of us simply don't want to see DE become the next CH "profession of the week" because of all the problems that will bring.
Of course, this is entirely seperate from the issue of do we want new combat droids or not - this whole "combat/crafter" vs. "crafter" thing is confusing that. Just about every DE wants combat droids - it's just that we don't agree on who is to use them.
Please don't confuse these two issues - because they may sound diverse but all have the same point : We want new combat droids. If you are going to require certifications, then we should get them - and that's where the combat/crafter idea splinters. Most people don't want to have to make that decision because we want combat droids to sell and use, and have either no certifications or certifications sprinkled throughout all profession trees. Basicly, we don't want to see droid usage as an individual class - but if you are forcing it on us, make it a sub-class of DE.

I was really hoping players could be droids but the game didnt go that route.
Creating DE only combat droids defeats how the artisan classes are setup and just brings alot of Issues onto the class that CH is going thru now.Only thing is CH takes 2 scout trees and DE's take 1. SO instead of CH/insert class whiners you will have DE/insert class whiners.
Dont get me wrong I would love to see DE combat droids though

DE should be a balance of combat and crafting.
And in what manner should they be balanced towards combat? What skills should they have to make this happen?
Sorry to but in on the DE forums, But as a BH I would love to purchase combat droids off you guys. I think now that low level pets are the only ones I can use are practically useless for my profession, a nice combat droid would be excellent.
Faction pets are going to be GCW only(as far as i understand) so how about making combat droids PvE only? Maybe a foundation for a new profession, some sort of droid handler/controler too

Again... what I would like to seeare low to mid-level combat droids equivalent to low to mid-level faction pets available for the general popluace. Give us4 levels of certs, General Populace, BasicMaster, EliteNovice and EliteMaster. The toughestdroid should be roughly equivalent to a StormCommando.
I want to see custom DE-only combat droids starting about StormCommando level and working up torival (but not eclipse) the rancor or graul mauler.
But most of all, I want our existing schematics and modules to work and actually make sense for once...
Crap... an edit function would be something else I'd like to see... feh. StormCommandoStormCommandoStormCommandoStormCommando!
I am not a droid engineer myself but for what it's worth: Instead of making the droid engineer into the new CH, why not make them into the droid medics? The only ones that can use new droid repair tools that actually heal damage on a droid? That would give a DE a role in a combat group if the player wishes to be part of one (along with the ability to sell and use a moderately tough combat droid like the probot is/was)
Or perhaps give them some kind of squadleader group enhancment that enhances the efficacy of all droids present in the group (medic droids etc). Perhaps allow them to make and apply temporary enhancements to droids (durasteel hull plating or whatever) like doctor buffs?
All that obviously together with new utility droids that people will want and that actually benefit many professions in a non-tanking way. Handing out more pets that are stronger than the player is a bad thing IMHO. Enhancing a player profession so it can make a difference *without* a pet would be a good thing.
