The Empire used Dark Troopers (pretty high powered droids) just after the Battle of Yavin, which fits in with this game's time period.

To the best of my knowledge, Dark Troopers are NOT "droids". They are basically stormtroopers in better (more powerful) outfits.

Please everyone..this is really NOT the place for a Continuity Debate....it really isn't and you all know it.

Pls, TK and others: Take this discussion elsewhere. Its off-topic and somewhate mis-placed given the putpose of this thread and in light of the droids we already have in the game. There is no need to respond to my reply with apologies for being off-topic. Just discuss the original topic if you have substantive revisions/suggestions to make.

We are building consensus here and we don't ahve much time.

There are two primary problems that I see with this proposal:

The first is that there are no other skills in the game where you can acquirea skill but cannot use it until you've gained some other skill. Sure, there are plenty of skills where you can't acquire them until you've acquired the ones below, but nothing to my knowledge where you have completed a box, earned a skill, and cannot use it because you haven't completed a different box. My guess is that the current code doesn't support such a thing and my feeling is that the developers won't want to make either the code or the game system support such a thing.

The second problem I see with this is that it still just gives certs to a group of people which the Devs say they don't want to do. Granted, it is no longer DEs. Now it is DEs with a level 4 in a basic combat skill.

Wasn't trying to actually debate continuity, just point out that higher level combat droids (as relates to this proposal) aren't completely out of the question. It did get a little off track.

Back to the original proposal: It probably would be best if the ranged support tree of marksman was the only combat requirement. It's the only branch of a novice combat profession that doesn't lead to an Elite Combat profession (not counting the ones that branch from Master Marksman). Any skill points in, say, unarmed 4, could be used "double" for the Hybrid DE and TKA.

Squad Leader and Combat Medic branch off Ranged Support, but it sounds fine to me.

Both of those require skill points put into other professions, so it is less unbalancing.

This is the same line of thinking I had earlier. The ranged support tree seems to make the most sense if there was a combat branch to be placed under DE, and still fit within the existing game mechanics.

Replies below. But a question first. Apart from these two concerns, do you have a problem with the proposal?

As I mentioned above, the CURRENT system supports only allowing players to call pets for which they actually have the skills. Under this proposal, the system only has to "block" players from using combat droids at the time the droid is called. Have you tried pulling out your pre-CH-nerf CL 10+ pets? It won't let you if you do not have the pet lvls through skills.

This point you raise here is based on speculation about the code and speculation about what the devs will or will not do. I would prefer comments on whether you like the proposal or not. The devs can tell us whether its implementable. Said another way, apart from your concerns about the code, do you like or dislike the proposal?

No. Re-read the proposal. DEs would only be able to use the combat droids IF they had the required combat skills.

If you consider the Artisan component requirements on the profession -- which are NOT required, I know -- I think as a whole you will see that it is equitable for DEs with combat skills and the heavy artisan reliance to get these droid certs.

It's also good to note that the Ranged Support line does not open up any Weapon Certifications (unlike Pistol, Rifle, and Carbine) so you're not stepping on any other profession's toes by making this a requirement.

That would be fine with me. Ranged Support requires combatr exp which is harder to get, but that's ok. There is no similar skill tree for brawler however. I purposefully left the proposal open regarding which trere shoudl be required -- the devs can decide that or make it any of the trees. The point is the expenditure of points.

But I like the ranged support idea since it reeks of balance -- combat exp is a b*tch to get; much harder than say pistol exp.

There is something to be said for that. Ranged Support has more of a "tactics" flavor and might be appropriate. Since it requires harder to get combat exp, its especially balancing.

My proposal is broader than this to be more inclusive, but this is one potential variant. I will edit the proposal accordingly to include this as a variant.

Revised the proposal to include:

"One variant of this proposal calls for Range Support 4 in Marksman to be the requirement for use of combat droids. That skill requires harder-to-get combat exp and has a "tactics" flavor which would fit well with combat droid control. To be clear, under this variant of this proposal, Range Support 4 in Marksman would be a pre-requisite to combat droid use."

Sounds good. One specific line would certainly be easier to implement instead of a while new mechanic.
