Thread: maybe Im just a little bit to proud. (a rant about paitents being pushy/abusive)
This is the main reason why I never hang out for very long in big city medical centers. I'm usually found in small time hospitals giving free doctor training to those who need it.
Where I usually am, is on the battlefields, buffing other players including myself, and just healing minor wounds. I don't get the kinda crap most medics and doctors get in the medical center basically because I can:
1. Revive people.
2. Revive people.
3. Revive people.
I'm always travel with people I know or a guildmate.
I think I've healed about 400 points of wounds (total) of people that weren't me in the last three weeks. Seriously. I just don't bother anymore. There's a perverse negative incentive for doctors to actually BE doctors in this game, which is kind of sad.
I also remember when everyone was a medic, and nobody had good heals, and people actually talked and made friends in the med center. That's really how it SHOULD be. But I also stopped going in once I started getting people who didn't even thank me. Thanks to the stim business I don't really need tips anymore - but thanks would be nice.
I'm sick of hearing the "do missions" answer to money problems. First of all, after tomorrow (well, today, now) low level missions will be paying WAY less than they used to. Think 500-600 per mission. That's a 50-60% drop, give or take, on a typical mission. Missions will no longer be the easy money they once were.
But more importantly, running missions isn't being a doctor. The underlying point to all the "tip" thread messages is -- everyone else gets paid, whether through mission payouts or through item sales, for BEING what they are. Doctors, medics, all entertainers, and combat medics don't. The fundamental issue is "should doctors, etc. be able to earn money from performing the duties/skills of their class".
This, I love:
"I really dont care if i get tipped and i would never charge for service thats low imo...."
Is it possible to flag yourself as a non-adult more vividly? Tell you what -- come over to my place. It needs a lot of cleaning. You can do it! I won't pay you, of course -- because paying for a service is low...... Guess what, kid -- paying for services is the basis of our ENTIRE SOCIETY. It's also what's paying for your subscription to the game. Think about it.
I find it interesting, and saddening, that my experience and opinion so closely matches most of the posters in this thread. I don't heal strangers anymore; I don't bother with the med centers; I'm sick of a lot of the people in this game and their attitudes. And I don't need any XP. If I didn't enjoy the stim business, and knowing that I make a good product that helps people, and if I didn't have a small circle of good people whom I can help, I wouldn't bother playing the Kadd character at all.
There's just no point.
I am finding out that it just does not matter what poeple do or say. If they say "Thank You", then I say Your Welcome (even have a macro for that). If they say nothing, I still say "your weclcome" sarcastically. I have two macros for this. How they respond does not matter to me personally. I am not going to get upset over something so trivial being just a game.
People are brave behind a computer and get away with a lot more than if the same situation happened in real life. Admit it, you do it too to some extent.
Anyway, just go about your business the way YOU want and don't worry about what others do or don't do. It's out of your hands and not a thing you can do about it. What you can do is control what YOU do. Play as you do and let oether work around you...be it unpolite and rude or them being one of the nicest people in the world.
Of course, not having to gain xp anymore sheds a whole new light on the entire subject.
I've taken to avoiding medical centers except when a) I need training, b) I want to try out a new med I just made while playing with experimentation or c) I need just a little bit more xp to get a box. I also pretty much won't heal anyone besides a PA mate or friend because of the prevailing attitude that people have, they all seem to think that I should pay credits from my own pocket so they can skip cloning fees. They can sit and heal naturally for all I care, if they're either too stupid or cheap to pay a 1000 1-time fee to avoid the wounds then they're most likely too cheap or stupid to pay me what my time, effort and medicines are worth. In the unlikely event that I do any healing at all at a med center it's by my choice and usually I don't even get a thank you, the exception was when a person walked in with about 1/2 black HAM and was fully healed before they could sit on a bed, the effect of 3 bored doctors I guess. I don't recall ever spending an extended amount of time (more than maybe 5 minutes) in a medical center ever, although I did spend hours and hours at the cantina healing the action on the entertainers. The scariest part is that the entertainers tip better than any of my other patients, and I wasn't healing anything on them they couldn't fix by sitting down for a couple of minutes. The irony is that the only class who is more screwed than medics/doctors as far as money making goes turn out to be the best tippers.
So to all you rude people who tip 20 creds for a full heal, do me a favor and be rude to me as soon as you see me, then I won't waste my time with you. I didn't become a doctor for the greater good of humanity, I became one to be a useful and productive member of my PA. One more thing, I don't need the XP either, that's too easy to come by to deal with your attitudes for it.
To all you people who do treat your healers with respect, I'm sorry I've had to take this outlook, unfortunately experience has taught me that any other will result in lots of wasted time and money, neither of which I have an abundance of. Don't take it too personally if I just ignore a heal request, I think you'll find that will be the norm of medical behavior soon. Pay in advance, speak with respect and I'll be more than happy to take care of your needs.
Only 10k more exp and I can be done with the whole hospital gig... I am going to just work on members of my guild and just have fun. I think I like being a doctor the best is for my roleplaying with injured customers. I do get ticked off a little when they dont even say thanks. But if I get a patient that actually roleplays they get the good stuff as I call it otherwise if they just sit the its all class A grade material so the lo0nger they have to wait. MUHAHAHAHA anyway 10k exp and Im done hanging in the Med Center.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Wookie Intern....
I have a simple system for fools like that and it works quite good. /addignore
Really why would you ever need to talk to those rude insulting people ever again. Not someone I want to know honestly.
I have a better idea than the doctors going on strike: stop wearing your doctor title.
I live near Fort Tusken, and if I'm at home crafting stims, about once a day or more I get a /tell:
DeadFool tells you, "r u a dr? im ded in ft tusksnen & i need arevive lol"
Right, like with all my mad medic sk1llz that qualifies me to run headlong into one of the most dangerous places in Tatooine, revive somebody and blow my entire mind pool, and run safely back home. Not.
On the other hand, I really enjoy it when I walk into a med center in Mos Espa, and there are no doctors anywhere, and someone says, "Oh, thank God, finally, we've been here 20 minutes." Those people are generally grateful, and I'm happy to help them, and I am often tipped well by them.
Just stop wearing the title. Let the half-dead brawlers search in vain for a medical professional. Heal only the ones you want to... be a Stealth Doctor!
I used to hide my Doc title...no longer.
I worked my ass off to earn the blasted thing, I am damed sure gonna wear it now!
If you send me a /tell to heal you? Guess what, you're paying for it or No Heal for You!
I never liked being in the hospital.
I never healed anyone cause I wanted to feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, I went in there occassionally to get xp, but other than that, healing patients is worthless. Most of the people you heal are a bunch of asswipes.
I love those people that are friendly and talk to you while you heal them. Those are the people that always tip well. Unfortunately, they are few and far between.
I am of the same philosophy as LiverThief. I'm not in medicine for the warm, fuzzies. My bedside manner is not the best, but what I do is provide fast and efficient healing. It's my job, and it's my product. Artisans have a product that they sell. They don't get tipped for their wares, they sell them. I'm selling healing. That's just the way I see it. Besides, why should medics be the only profession that doesn't deserve to get paid while gaining xp? Every other profession sure as hell does.
There is one answer to all of our money problems, as well as problems with butthole patients, and that is MEDIC/DOCTOR MISSION TERMINALS. Simple solution. We wont need to heal people for the money or for the xp, so finally those warm, fuzzies people that just like good company can do their thing, and the rest of the doctors can actually make a penny to rub between to fingers.
I'm also strongly suggesting some doctor unions. Medics are fine by themselves doing free healing, earning xp, and meeting people. Doctors on the other hand tend to not need xp that comes out of the MC and it's more of a service we provide. If you want to wait for a medic to chip away at your HAM for 20 minutes, it's free. If you want to have all black HAM healed in under a minute, that will cost you.
I go into the MC when I have wounds. I never heal myself. I'm always hoping a medic or novice doctor will be there that can use the xp. And guess what, I tip them the same amount that I charge, no matter how long it takes them. So you see, it's a two way street. We have to set an example as well. Don't heal yourself. Go to the MC and pay your local medics to heal you.
There are some issues with people in the game believing that doctors are a service class there to cater to their every need. Last night I was fighting with some friends on Lok, and we met our demise. After healing myself and my group in the medical center, we left and started heading back out to fight. As we were leaving the town (on the opposite side of the stronghold from the medical center) someone asked me in spatial if i could heal him. Since wounds suck and woundpacks C are cheap, i generally heal people for free, so i said sure...only to find that he had less than 25 wounds spread across six stats. Kind of reminds me of a commercial i saw for some breath mints where i guy went to the hospital for a cut on his finger and ended up getting the attention of the entire medical staff. This guy wanted me to waste 20 minutes of my groups time running back to the medical center to heal him rather than him waiting in the medical center for the next tick to swallow all his wounds.
Being a master doctor has its advantages. If im in the medical center and someone makes a fairly well articulated, polite request for healing, I'll heal them up without begging for payment. Lots of people are so impressed by seing their 300 wounds melt away in a second that they tip me of their own will...must have shocked them or something, cause no rational person would do such a thing! :-) All I ask is that patients are civilized. Course, another of the advantages of being a master doctor is not having to worry about xp...so if someone comes in and is rude, all I have to do is say "No, you're not very nice."
I recomend to all up and coming doctors to do the same. Medical experience is NOT hard to come by...i mastered doc about a week ago, and have had my max 80,000 medical xp for at least half of that time just from healing my groupmates' damage and wounds. One quick tip, though...heal wounds for tips, apply buffs for payment. WoundpackC is cheap, with only one specific requirement (seeds are easy to find), and wounds can make a self sufficient character become useless. Enhance D packs are fairly expensive, requiring avian meat and reactive gas in addition to several factory parts, and are not necessary to enjoy the game. Also, since they are so nice, if you dont charge at least to cover your costs for buffs you'll run yourself into the ground...you may not vomit when the effects wear off, but doctor buffs are definately addictive!!
I don't know about everyone else but even before I bought the game I choose to be a healer cause I saw how important and valued you would be in a game such as this and I wanted to help people. Overall healers get treated like crap. We may not be the stars of SWG but we keep the gears turning. Without us SWG would be dead. Like who wants to spend a day or two just aitting in the med center healing a single black line every 30 minutes. If for only one day we all stopped healing I think people would realize how valuable we are. As for money wise I live off of tips. Usualy I don't ask for tips and when I get a tip I always thank them. Those who don't tip me I keep their names on a list. The next time they come for a heal I tell them I'll heal them for free with crappy A wound packs or 500 - 1k for C's and above. Once they tip me they're name gets removed from the list untill they forget to tip again.
The other way I make money is leading a group to fort tuskin, Lok or anyother dangerous place where they could earn massive exp. I usualy charge 500 - 1k from every person in the group up front. Those that don't pay don't get healed or revived.
I know what you mean, I'm almost at Master Medic and, other than from my friends, have received exactly one tip, and that was after I told him not to worry about it. He offered it and I told him that at this point the offer was all that I needed to feel good. What's funny is irl I'm a server in a restaurant and take crap from customers jsut to get tips. It still amazes me that I come home to a game I play to forget life and do the same thing! I still don't stop though, and that amazes me even more. I don't know, maybe Doctors and Medics and Servers just like being nice even though we don't know it/
