Thread: On Mandalorian Armor
I know there are a lot of people who want to have this armor because its worn in the films and its cool looking armor. I also know there are a lot of people who would want to have this armor simply because they would expect it to be "uber". Then there are a lot of people who would want it for both. Personally, I feel that a LOT more armor should be made available in the game. (such as stormtrooper and snowtrooper armor that is craftable, Dengar wore a brown snowtrooper chest plate, id love to duplicate a similar look to that!) I just feel that if I go to a city, or dungeon or some kind, and bump into as many suits of the mando armor as I do suits of composite armor now, I might get sick.
I understand its a bit late to stop this from happening now. But I do have two suggestions Id like to make to keep the number of suits of this we see balanced to appear as it should (rare).
1.) give the armor a glaring weakness. Perhaps its terrible against heat and acid. That would basically alienate the PVP community from using it.
2.) make the quest amazingly hard to do. Make this more of a group content quest.
3.) make the mando armor looted only 1 component of the armored suit, with the helmet being the rarest of the drops. This way if people are running around with the guantlets and knee pads and some of the chest plates, it wont be that bad, immersion wise. Its the helmet that is the dead giveaway.
4.) Color the armored drops. Basically, dont put them in silver, blue, green or gold (like the jango or boba color schemes) make a new color scheme or two for the mando armor, to further differentiate it.
5.) make it instanced. This means that you will never have 100 people in the cave at once, all attacking everything at once, and then have one ninja looter grab the prize. This will ensure its group content.
6.) perhaps even give the armor a certification that can be gained at master bounty hunter, master commando, master pistoleer, master rifelman, or master carbineer (the types of professions the mandalorians would have been. There were no TKA mandos, or anything like that.
7.) Do NOT make it craftable. Make it a drop only. If it can be crafted, itll be available to everyone at any time. As long as you keep it so that the other armor types are better or without the weaknesses mando armor has, most people will just stick with what is the best.
If you do at least a few of these suggestions, I think itll really help to limit how much mando armor we see out there, and hopefully itll prevent us ever seeing a perfect jango/boba clone. The SWG team has done a good job thus far making sure that the zabraks cant look identical to darth maul, im hoping that they step up to the challenge here as well.
all of that said, Id much rather see some kind of quest that results in Clone Trooper armor, which would be a tad bit more prevelant than the mandalorian armor.
Hmm..
I gotta say I haven't been able to read through all the posts (9 pages and my time is limited..) So if my ideas repeat over someone elses.. im sorry.
Ideas- hmm. Don't make it craftable. Don't make it require special resources. Don't put it soley in one cave. Make it require a series of extremely long, hard (boring ? *gulp*) galaxy spanning quests.
Armorsmiths might be bothered, but.. they make a fortune ( I should know, I was one..)
Don't only give it to MBH's, or at least don't only give them the ability to wear it (maybe the quests to get it so they can then sell it later?) After all, we only know of TWO BH's wearing the Mando armor, Boba and Jango Fett! (Or so I think, I'm not particularly versed about that) yet a whole planet of warriors, a whole armor of them used to wear it.
Jango/Boba were just extremely lucky to be able to find it.
I think that the armor should be incredibly special. Don't just give it extremely high resists, its just metal after all. (You'd think that with technology they can make better armor..)
Give it some special resist or something, maybe resistance to lightsaber damage (if they ever get their own damage), let the wearer hover while using it, use some time of wire thrower (like Jango used on obi, and Boba used in ROTJ)
Again, I think the focus should be more on how to get the armor. You should have to focus on several aspects. One, the backpack (with a rocket launcher?), Gloves, Boots, Leggings, Chestplate, all four arm pieces. Specific mandalore weapons (only useable with the armor) could also be sweet.
TO get the armor: (Heres a little suggestion in story form) I'm hunting, on say Lok, I go to the Cantina in Nyms to get a drink, and behold a "drifter" I speak to him because I like to speak to random people, and he tells me of a rumor he heard... about a guy who had a mandalore helmet. You speak to him some more.. he "drifts" off to have a drink or something (this would be really cool if this one guy just visits random cantina's all over the place (PC's included)) You think to yourself, thats interesting, and move on. A few days later you meet a stranded captain in the middle of nowhere. You get off, and do a few missions for him... say give him aid/(water?) and direct him to the nearest SP/Shuttle. He in returns tell's you his story, of a guy who boarded and stole his vessel, and wore a Mando helmet. Your interested now, hearing this story from two places now, and you ask the guy some more questions.. end up with the captain saying "I think he went..." (to some random planet/spot) You search this planet for a while, and find an "Escaped prisoner" *or some unique title* the prisoner tells you the same tale as the captain, and has a few quests and then gives you a direction, plus a (GUESTIMATED) wp of where he escaped from. You go and search (maybe with the aide of a RANGER!) and find the camp! You slay the mercs/smugglers/pirates/soldiers and the Captain (who should be extremely tough, but soloable *captain solable,.) You then loot the helmet from the captain. Voila, you now are in the possession of one of the rarest pieces of armor in the world.
Thats one possible quest suggestion. You could do several type things, and that, (to me) seems hard as HELL. But its realistic (as far as we can go in a scifi genre i believe) in terms of how rare the armor is ( i dont believe even Boba had a full set?). Immersion to the SW universe is also possible through this. It would be very awesome if Jedi were somehow involved.. (maybe one of the quests had you hunting a Jedi Padawan/Sith Padawan or something..)
My thoughts
The armor must wear only MBH and MCM.
In the dung can be only MBH and MCM ..noone else. The quest will have to be extremely difficult and only solo can finish that and whenutry enter u see loading screen. After that your character will be alone at the start of dungeon. Your skill shows if u are the person who can wear the armor and the drop (schematic) will be really rare! The setswill have special protection against jedi (NPC and player). When u killed solo 100 player jedi (not jedi initiate but from Jedi apprentice higher)..u obtain new title "Mandalorian warrior" and u can continue with Death Watch quest (not for armor) for new gear.
the mando armor will be a schematic, not looted pieces. if you'll go back and read the letter released after the stratics chat with the devs, there were two important references. the first was concerning bounty hunters and how we would be severely upset if just anyone could wear an armor type most associated with us. the implication there that it will have a BH cert of some kind. the other important reference was how we should know a good armorsmith. the implication being it will be craftable by armorsmiths and able to be experimented on, and resource quality will affect stats. the first i have no problem with whatsoever. im a master bounty hunter and have no desire to do anything else. the second part i do have a problem with. armorsmiths are already the richest players in the game. with more armor types and weapon types coming up in future publishes (see the art director's letter to the community), armorsmiths and weaponsmiths will become even richer.
as it stands now, all credits originate with the game. the only way to make money is to do missions and/or loot it from NPCs. that means that all the combat classes feed the crafters. right now we are dependent upon the crafters for the goods we need to effectively do our jobs. to a certain extent that's fine. the problem comes when we try to apply our own skills to our profession. we need a legitamate reason for mastering scout, and, to date, we have none. we cant harvest resources from dead marks (Boba Fett wore a braid of wookie scalps. might add a little content if we could take trophies). since the camp restrictions for pulling pets/vehicles/droids was lifted (thank the cry-baby jedi for this one) our ability to make camps is useless. traps only work on creatures, which hardly any of us hunt, and the ability to see a targets stats we get at hunting 2 (i believe. i may be wrong there).
so as it stands right now, we've wasted a crapload of skill points on a profession that gives us nothing useful. make this armor craftable by us made with resources we harvest off tough creatures we kill ourselves. give the armor traps like the flame-thrower, wrist lanyard and poison rocket darts Jango and Boba had on thiers. if a combat medic can use poison and disease, why can't we? its more in line with the bounty hunter profile to use these sorts of weapons that a combat medic, who should be dragging incapped players off a battlefield before they can be DB'd, getting them to a doctor for healing, and getting back into the fight to do it all over again. the combat medic should have a much more limited role than they have now.
a compromise could be this.... make the armor segments craftable by the armorsmith, but we could assemble the armor ourselves. this would keep the crafters in the loop, and give the bounty hunters the ability to customize the armor to our own tastes.

This is a supplement to my previous post.
After further investigation into the topic of who can and can not wear Mandalorian Armour, it has been found that their is no current information on the subject in star wars data bank. This being the case it should be noted that their is no specific proof to who can wear the amour and that said it should be open to all species. This would gave an opportunity to the art department to come up with some stunning visuals of what the armour would look like if it were species specific. Example a helmet that twi'leks appendages can fit through, boots that can fit Trandoshans, etc. Of course the armour should encompass all of the armour parts and not just certain areas.
I want to add one other little thing. If you decide to make so that other professions can wear it make it so that ONLY combat professions can wear it and you need to be MASTER of that profession. However I still stick with what I wrote before onlyMaster Bounty Hunters (and maybe Commandos) should wear this armour. Their is a certain amount of hertiage that goes with wearing Mandalorian Armour. They were pure combatants, not crafters or entertainers. They were hardy soldiers doing the duty of any pure breed warrior. The legacy of the Mandalorians is carried with each suit. So should that transcend into this game. It is continutiy I speak of and continuity should be the law.I don't mean to rip into you guys at SOE but there is a real problem with continuity in this game. Sometimes you uphold it and sometimes its like you wear blinders and don't realize the implications of letting things slip by.
