I must ask ...
(so laugh , people!)
- Is this a forum nerf or a forum rebalance?
- You need to stop the star duping exploit before you implement this!
- Someone can always buy stars off of eBay. When are you stopping the auction?
- Do I need this to become a Jedi?
- If lots of people give me stars, and I run out of room in my house, where do they go?
- Are stars capped, like XP?

Any former Ultima players here?
Rember "Peaches" from the forums?
The most famous/infamous OSI apologist ever.
She even got a quoted on the Ultima 7th anniversary box.
That's all this system will promote. Cliques and cheerleaders.

A while ago I read from a CSR that the 1-star button was designed to be used to identify posts that qualify for a report (as in they are abusive or violate the EULA).
Since then I have only used the 1-star rating in that way and very rarely - I have used it one one post I felt truly offensive (if memory serves the whole thread was later deleted) and on a few which have been widly off topic in either the In Test or In Concept forums. Could we confirm either if you believe that is an appropriate use of the star system and how you view ratings - one possible suggestion below:
1-star - This post is offensive and should be deleted or is off topic in a controlled thread (e.g. This one!).
2-star - This post adds nothing to the current discussion.
3-star - This post has been useful in some way - i.e. answered a question raised, made a useful suggestion.
4-star - This post is important - It is a key answer to a question, makes a number of useful comments (whether or not the individual agrees with them)
5-star - This post is incredible - If there is one post everyone reads (devs included) it should be this one!
Brilliant is all I can say about this idea. How about it Garva?
I would recommend if possible that users are only allowed to postONE 5-star rating per 24hours so that this really means something if you can only choose one thread a day.
May I be as so bold to add on a bit to your idea? Anyways, I think they should be able to rate as much as they want to in a day.
But, for the one star bandits the moderators should have the ability to review the post and decide if it was offensive and then revoke the one star rating.

I'm sorry if this sounds overly critical, but 'Why?'
As compared to so many other issues that plague the game, the sheer fact that making 'pretty' changes to the forum, yet again, seems kinda like a waste of time and resources.
How does this do anything for the game? I'd rather see your efforts directed elsewhere.
Did you read the above post? Garva is a Forum mod. He has nothing whatsoever to do with programming of the game. Completely different systems.
Not meaning to sound mean, but really the forum mods are just trying to make our forum time more enjoyable but they really do not have anything to do with fixing the game or programming new stuff.

Nice ranking system for those who post a lot...which I, obviously, do not.
I read the Forums every day and if I feel my concerns have been adequately covered by others I don't feel I need to addmore repetition to theposts. (Except on Test forums where they need to know how many people are experiencing the same problems.)
I appreciate the thoughtful and insightful posts which I read. The level of intelligence and innovation brought to bare on the variety of issues in the forums always reminds me of how many others truly enjoy SWG and want only the best for it.
My thanks to the Community of the Forums.

agree, you are asking us to put our ranking at the judgement of others. you can do the same. where is your faith?

Out of curiosity, why is the starring of dev and administrator posts disabled, GarVa? If you truly believe that the star system works and that stars are a good reflection of a post's quality, then I'd think that you'd want to see how many stars your posts are receiving.
If the devs and administrators are as confident in the starring system as you'd like us to believe, I think it would be fair to open their posts up to starring and allow people to view their accumulatedstar averages. I'd imagine that dev posts would be the standard for "high quality" posts and would consistently receive high ratings.

I'm not liking this star system, I have a lame 1-star stalker who tracks everyone of my post and 1-stars them all, has one starred every single one of my post since I started the forums. My message rating is two stars! Pretty rare.

Thanks for all your feedback I have emailed Lithium with some questions and will update the system probably tomorrow, I do appreciate the feedback. Just a note to some of you who say "get rid of the star system" as I have stated the star rankings will not grant that much more than the regular ranks in the end version. Other than color and Title, this is meat to diversify the forums a little, EG: spread a little fun to those who enjoy those sort of things. I do not work on the game coding or anything else like that, my job is the forums so saying I should invest my time on the game systems is [dangerous] and [scary]
People positively identified as a one star bandit, get their post rating ability nullified (eg: they can still rate post but it has zero effect)
Also note to satisfy those that are not interested in post ranking systems at all, the edit post ability comes at 3 months of forum time and only75 post.

you will never see any Galactic Senators this way.

I like the ideas, but is it possible to do something to negate the past 1-star bandits?
I look at my current ranking of 2.4 ... and know that it is from a recent history where I got the 1-star bandit attention. Prior to that I was in the 3-4 star range.
Possible solution ... Start from scratch on ratings or remove past 1-stars from calculations since you will now be looking to apply weight to a persons ratings that they give.
