Thread: Girls, does it ever bother you?

I *only* get accused of being a guy IRL when I've publicly and solidly verbally trounced someone. Usually in the precense of half his d00d friends.

Apparently, no RL female would be able to out-dance a guy verbally. Despite the fact that I can properly spell the following words:

You

Please

Thank you

And so on.

Oddly enough, I get accused of this a lot less when I am dancing. Apparently, wiggle the cute li'l blue butt enough, and they won't care what I am on this end of the computer, so long as they have something pleasant to watch. It's only when I take myself out into the combat zones that they give me crap.

It has gotten a lot better over the months, though. Bless that SWG faces site.

I will just share one bad experience of a friend of mine. He married a female dancer toon in game. Was "married" for about 6 months then found out the "female" was really a guy irl. My friend literally freaked out. I didn't play the game at the time so i found it kinda amusing and gave him a little bit of a hard time about it lol. Though he did finally get me to try this game out as i got bored with the MUD i played before this due to the fact the it was constant pk and you could lose about 6 months of stuff in one death. Was WotMud if you ever try to play it don't its ruled now by the 1337 stuff i see here sometimes.

Oi... your friend needed to take a chill pill.

I don't know aboiut anyone else, but I didn't miss the part about this being a ROLE playing game.

I once freaked out a lover of mine (in game) when I told him I had a confession to make... I wasn't really a petite, athletic force using matrial arts master who was trained at every dance in the world.

He thought that was funny. Basicaly iaccording to that type, t's ok for you to play a wookie in game and not be a wookie in real life. It's of to be Jackie Chan here and not be Jakie Chan in rl, as long as you stay the same sex.

Afterall, we don't want to offend anyones' ever-so-fragile sense of ego by suggesting that they might be a 'homo' by speaking to aguy-playing-a-girl from across 5000 miles of copper wire and computer chips in a game where we're all pretending to be from outer space.

That would be wrong! *wink*

I'm not going to get into a debate about this, but if you are playing the opposite sex and get into a romantic roleplaying relationship with another player and don't have the common decency to tell them up front and let them decide if the fantasy works for them, then who is actually the one in the wrong? /eyes_wide_open

I can see what you mean if we're talking about emotionally involved. It's easy to become very attatched to people we meet here.

But that's not what I was talking about.

Basicaly my point was that some people can't handle somone playing the opposite gender, even though they can handle playing a different species or profession.

It's called hypocricy.

I once listened to a guy playing a zabrakian insult another guy playing a human female. The zabby's argument was it wasn't realistic for a man to play f female character.

I get it alot when I play my male character. People get angry, people get defensive, people even get violent.

If you don't believe me look up the nameBrandon Teena. He was a transvestite (man in woman's clothing) who was murdered on December 31st, 1993 by two men for the crime of crossdressing.

Now this is only my opinion, but the taunting and jeering here that I get when I play a man, and that men get when they play a woman in game is a lesser version of that type of hate crime.

I would assert that anyone who gets involved in an online relationship in SWG bears a responsibility for clearly establishing, as early as possible, whether the relationship is IC roleplalying only, or extends to the players involved. In Unreal7's story above, I would consider both parties to blame, because neither of them did so.

Although I'm assuming they didn't. Maybe they did and one of them lied.

Incidentally, Brandon was a transsexual, not a crossdresser (not that the distinction would have meant much to the animals that murdered him). He was born biologically female, but with a male gender, and was in the process of a sex change to match his gender at the time of his death. For more on Gender Dysphoria, click here.

People can be idiots. Personally, I figure that the sex of the character is no guarentee of the sex of the player... and see nothing wrong with people playing opposite sex characters (I have done it myself... in fact, SWG is the only game I have ever played where every one of my characters was the same sex that I am in RL). Anyone who gets "romantically involved" with someone else in a game, needs to keep this in mind and not get all bent out of shape if they discover that the hot thing they became involved with is played by someone of the opposite sex.

As for the homo-phobes, I know of plenty of people who play opposite sex characters because they like to look at members of the opposite sex... and this is true for both male and female players. So this is also no indication of sexual bias either. The same can be said of RL transvestites (I dated one once, he was a real fun date without a lot of the hang-ups so many men have).

Also, all of usneed toremember that this IS a GAME! We are unlikely to actually MEET the people we know in game (sure, it has happened, but it's rare). If we like the person we know in game, that should be all that matters... and not whether the person playing the character we meet is the same sex as their character in RL or not.

I find it sadly ironic that in a world where being "gay" is getting to be not only an acceptable lifestyle, but actually seems to be becoming an "in" thing to be, that hate crimes such as you refer to in your post are also happening more often.

I am a guy, most of my toons are guys, but i have a couple girl characters.. im not gay. i dont go pick up guys. I RP, but i make it clear i like girls. but then girls liking girls some guys get into soo it can back fire !

However i know tons of guys that have female avatars soo many infact that i auto-matically assume its a guy. I dont treat them any differently im just as nice no matter which avatar you are using.. BTW i know quit a few girls that have guy avatars cuase they hate getting hit on 24/7..

Me personally i have never run into a problem either way. Girls dont let it get you down. Its just that the vast majority are really guys thems the facts mam' I have met a couple real nice girls in game though and you can usually tell in the way they talk : )

I have had female toons in this game and others. I know that there are real life females that play SWG. This is 2004 (almost 2005) and I'm not so naive to think that there are not women playing a game that is aimed at such a broad audience as SWG is. The female toons I've played in the past were usually as a result of the "If I'm going to stare at an avatar for hours at a time, she may as well be hot" reasoning.

Also, I have nothing to back this up, but I think that there are more RL females in SWG than in other games I've played in the past. I attribute this to the strong appeal of the Star Wars license to a wide range of demographicsand the inclusion of the social professions. SWG was made tobe marketedtomore than just the 'go out and shoot stuff, be 1337 crowd'. Oh, and beforeanyone whipsout the pitchforks and torches, no I'm not saying that girls should stick to the social profs or some such nonsense. I know that anyone can (and do) enjoy all the facets of this game. Other games that lack SWG's diversity would suffer from a larger amount of persons flat out refusing to belive there are ladies in the game. Fuschia points that out in her post.

I suspect that much of the homophobia that arises come from the teen/pre-teen adolecent mentality. There are exceptions to this guideline, however, as the teenage years end at nineteen, but adolecence can last a lifetime.

just out of idle curiousity, is there a character named Todd on Tarquinus? If not, I'd love to make a really girly-girl dancer character just to see everyone's reactions

HA!!

I *knew* that barky bothan seemed a little familiar!!

Anyhoo. I did try at one point having a male alt on the server I regularly play on. (Yeah, it required a 2nd account, but I like having two. ) I kept him for about two months, then gave up.

My reasoning? I just plain can't role-play a male char, especially not an officer. I was not in the least convincing. Not sure what I did wrong, since every so often I still get accused of being a guy when I'm on Chii, but the only way I was able to play a male was to just be fairly quiet, else I was a dead giveaway. And I'm too social a person to stay that quiet all the time.
