Thread: So much hatred for AFKers.

That isn't AFK, that is just having the AFK flag. I fully understand why people set the flag while they are not really AFK, either to not be bugged, or to give a canned auto-response. (Perhaps a way to set an auto-response without being AFK wouldn't be a bad idea.) I don't think anyone has a problem with that.

AFK does not mean that person does not care to converse......its just means that they could be doing other things at the same time, and already conversing with someone else.

The AFK-Flag and Macrotaining are two completely different things. You can turn off the flag if you macrotain, you can turn it on when you're at the keys. Just the flag is nothing to be concerned about. The state of players that leave their toon for unattended gameplay is what concerns us. If you're busy, you're all but AFK. And if you drop a "Sorry, I'm busy telling" into the group chat if someone talks to you, I don't think anyone will complain.

One solution.. group the AFK'ers and help em power through it and get them out of the cantinas as quick as possible. Work together because they don't want to be there and you dont want them to be there. Then later down the road when they need to be healed they may tip you more for helping em get through what they didnt want to doin the first place which will bring a better atmosphere to cantinas back like it used to be. And that is all. =)

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Heheh... It just occurred to me.

A "communist" dancer would probably demand that all tips for an entire week go into a "pot" on some recording device on the server, and then at the end of the week, every dancer on the server gets an equal share of the tip, regardless of how much dancing they did that week. LOL...

Ok. I've been reading the "Anti AFK" threads pretty thoroughly, and I think I have a unique perspective on it.

I was a Dancer first. I started as an Entertainer, and went into Dancer (and about fifty other bagillion profs too, just to test them out). I DO like dancing. It was fun. I could sit around and bs and roleplay and get exp for doing nothing. It was pretty cool. That was even BEFORE I found out about grouping and getting MORE exp for doing nothing. I was flabbergasted! Amazed! Astounded!

Silly me. I didn't MASTER Dancer.

So, eventually, I dropped it and moved on, and experimented, and then...yes, the holocrons came out. Well, Jedi is a profession I haven't tried yet! So, I went on a Mastering craze (ok, not a craze, but you know, mastering professions in a row). I have Mastered Doctor, Combat Medic, Medic, Weaponsmith, and Smuggler. Medic you breeze through, even if you're not trying to. Trust me. I did that twice. I mastered Doctor as a "just in case" sort of thing...but buffing people was fun, and curing disease, so I kept that for a bit. My first holocron said weaponsmith, and I groaned...but I really came to enjoy it, so much so that for my permanent character template, Master Weaponsmith is going on it (I am loathe to part with skills, even for holocrons...). Next holocron was Smuggler. Wow, was THAT fun! Slicing weapons, cool specials, seeing what's in containers. Mmmm. Master Smuggler SECOND to go on permanent character template. Combat Medic was next...and while I went through that very, very quickly, I could see how it could be fun. However, I didn't play around too much, as I was excited to see if I had a silent holo yet.

Everyone still with me? Ok, it was Dancer.

I groaned (not because I hate dancing, I like it) cuz I didn't Master it to begin with. So, I dropped all my stuffs off, pulled out a couple of outfits from my overexpansive closet, and went to the cantina. It wasn't what you'd call "prime time" at the cantina, but close enough so that there were lots of people going in and out. Got in a group (no problem there), and started boogie-ing my tushie off. I had some exp left over, so I got two boxes of healing and dancing no prob.

Ok. Here's where my unique perspective comes in. In the OLD days, I danced in Keren. Not anymore. Nope nope. Coronet or Theed now if you want exp. Second difference, very few of the entertainers there roleplayed or greeted people. Some did, but not like it was when we'd fall all over each other to grab attention and flirt and just in general talk to people. And when the entertainers DID roleplay, it was for like two sentences, rarely more. Third, the OTHER people didn't roleplay AT ALL. Not a one. ZIppo. Zelch. Well, ok, there was this one cool bounty hunter that we got to talking and whatall and that was interesting, but that was one out of at LEAST 50 peeps, if not more, that went through there and got healed.

I finally got so bored that I made a quick macro and started cruising the boards, checking every couple minutes to see if something was shakin'. Nothing. It was...sad. And not fun. Very not fun.

So, you know, I don't have a solution to the problem. I'm not sure it is a problem. I'm not sure it ISN'T a problem. I just don't know. All I know now is that other than a *couple* cool people, being an entertainer isn't fun anymore. I mean, it just isn't! Yes, yes, I know, I can make it fun... I was TRYING. Desperately trying to make it fun. I was evenrhyming and playing words gamesto get attention from the mindless zombies that wandered through there...because I KNOW they were ATK--they walked in after all--but no matter what I did, they didn't say anything back. Not even a /chuckle or /laugh or a "hehe" or a "wazzup noob u a tard?" Nothin'. It was frightening...and I thinka sympton (however you spell it, it's 6 am here now and blah blah I can't spell) of a larger problem in SWG. People are just...min/maxing to get their holocron professions. Everyone else is assuming that people are doing that, and so ignore them, treat them like NPC's, like objects. This is going to make getting Master Dancer a nightmare for me... because before it was fun! It was! I enjoyed it. Now it's torture, and I can understand BOTH sides...how AFKers are bored doing the prof (I am right now), and how Dancers/Musicians/Entertainers are mad at AFKers because ... because... no one roleplays anymore because of the assumption that everyone is AFKing.

I do understand both sides. I don't want to lose AFK dancing (not just to get phat exp for me) because it's a handy tool when I need to finish laundry or step outside for a few minutes to get the mail...whatever... but I want people to stop AFKing just to get experience too. I know I can't have both sides, so if I had to choose, I'd abstain from the vote. I want a system that gives people a choice when playing an entertainer of whether to be AFK or ATK, rewarding both styles of gameplay (because it is a game, folks, nothing to get too riled about, and it is the developers fault for pushing people into professions that they do not want to get a profession that they DO want...it is NOT the players' faults) yet KEEP THEM SEPERATE. However, I don't think that's possible in the slightest. Boo, me.

Of course, I just want people to roleplay more, in general. It's too easy to "backslide" into not roleplaying in a roleplaying game. Blah blah. I want, I want, I want is the theme of this game, why should I be any different?

Ok, this is getting too philosophical right now for this early in the morning. Soke, be quiet! Quiet, woman!

I am stand 100% on the side of the thread starter. I am Master Musician and i have done this just with AFKing.. cry about it.. but that is a game a can do what i want if the devs don't nerved it.

I pay my Fee like the other here, but why should i play just 2 jours on a day ? Only because you all here they thinks i have to play my Entertainer like you ?

Entertainers are very cool proffesions, but the grinding in Entertaining (i was Master Dancer too) thats the booring part, ok dancers have one advantage you can always dancing the dance that you like.

Musician have to play always SW 1, Rock or SW 2. because in a large group you have always a Noob and he can't play skilled songs and we have to play SW 1 again..

ok i have to play now again i am now @Keyboard, cya

Kind of like EVERYBODY in a combat group gets an EQUAL slice of the payout, whether they actually killed something or sat on their toosh.

What I do not understand, and will never understand, is why, when you are going to get mail, is it apparently essential to you to keep your toon dancing? What is so all-fired evil and unbearable about stopping the dance, sitting your toon down, getting the mail or laundry for 10 minutes, coming back, and starting her up again? I understand this even less than I understand the perma-AFK crowd who ONLY want to get XP. You say it's not just to gain "phat xp". Yet what else are you doing but gaining a tiny bit of xp while you get the mail? And in the scheme of things is this really making your actual game experiene more enjoyable?

To MaxClegne,

I loved your post ,,it very reflects my feelings except the part of abstaining from an afk vote. Most of the entertainers now dont even remember the launch days or even careand how much fun the cantina's were.

All they want now is to master musician or dancer and move on to the next profession,,,

Its all a big mess ,,and by not making any meaningful changes,,SOE has reduced what could have been a fun ,,unique and important profession to nothing more than a boring afk log in and log out and most of the launch entertainers have either quit the game entirely or moved on to other professions .

Sad to see the profession so messed up and so little being done to correct it. But they do have time to offer a new color option on vehicles,,,as if thats a real worthwhile thing for a developer to spend time doing,,it really shows where entertainers really rank on the ladder,,,dead last,,or maybe one rung above image designers,,or maybe tied since image design is in the entertainer profession. I have no hope whatsoever that any meaningful changes will be added soon.

I started a toon on Ahazi specifically to be a dancer/artisan/armorsmith. I joined a great artisan guild that provides help whenever needed. Having been a dialup customer until a week ago, my dancing skills weren't climbing because I was busy levelling artisan and armorsmith while I was on. Now that I am a broadband user, I've been parking my toon at an empty cantina right when I go to bed. I also run it while at work. Why do I do this? Simple. I want to level dancer. Do I spam tip messages? No, because I have another profession that makes me credits. Is there something wrong with my going AFK? No. Why? Because hunters will go into my empty cantina and get their BF healed instead of travelling all the way across the map to get healed. They get healed, and I get healing xp in the process. It's a win-win situation.

When I finally elevate to master dancer, I will be charging for mind buffs, but will NEVER ask for entertaining tips outside that. Will I spam '/applaud me please' messages while I'm there? No, I can wait an extra hour or two for master. Will I ask for a healing to support the entertainer? No, I wrote a 6 minute pause timer in my macro to build my action on its own. I'm just a simple artisan/entertainer trying to make my way in the universe.
