Thread: The new flourishes, what ever shall we do about them?
Very dissapointed
agreed on the whole kata discussion, thease movements do not correspond with the rest of the dances..
the whole CH thing was a terrible letdown as well.

I love the thought behind the new dances, and they WOULD be fine, but as everyone else has made clear...
1.) They are NOT motion-captured. Which non-motioncap = suck.
2.) They are keyed, which unless great painstaking detail is given to it..then it = suck.
3.) They are far too FAST.
4.) They are far too JERKY.
5.) They break the laws of physics.
Otherwise they are pretty cool dances, whoever designed them doesn't suck entirely, he made additions that, if of the same quality as the release-date dances, then I would use. *sigh* But since they are NOT of release-date dance quality, then I refuse to use them. >_<
If anyone EVER removes numbers 2, 3, and 5 flourishes from basic2, I will personally go to wherever they make the game andstrangle him/her. If they remove 2, I will flay him/her alive first.
I love 'superstar'.
About the only new flourish I'll bother doing is formal flourish 4. Even the rest of the formal flourishes, arguably the least suffering of the lot, look unnatural. The twirls changing speed in the middle just looks odd and mechanical, not smooth and fluid.
Animating a character by hand is no walk in the part. Neither is MC. But at least with MC, you'll end up with something that looks natural.
Most of the time I'm pretty much alone in the cantina on Moenia -perhaps it getsbusy sometimes but since I'min the UK I'm on at different times to most people... The only other person there reguarly at the same timeis a dancer who's pretty much always afk. So for me, the new flourishes give me more variety in my dancing, and it doesn't really matter if it looks bad to those watching. I don't like using macros, so I'm sitting there deciding what buttons to press, and for me more flourishes means more fun!
Obviously it'll be better when everything's fixed and looks fluid. I'm still working my way up to Novice Dancer, so I'm using formal a lot. The later flourishes seem to defy the laws of gravity, but if you're a wookie dancer you already look fairly daft! I love the new ballerina flourish.
I'm glad they added them... when they're fixed they'll be great! This is alla work in progess after all. ![]()
I have to say I like almost all the new flourishes except the formals, except spinning ballerina. I like that one. But don't get rid of it. I love it.

i despise the new flourishes, just about all of them.
get rid of them! or, if not get rid of them, i have some ideas for how to make them better (if possible).
i am very curious as to what the animators were thinking when they went to animate these flourishes. as an artist, i understand the difficulty of trying to animate, but i also know my anatomy and movement pretty well. when you look at these animations, you'll notice the way the character carries its' weight-- and then you'll notice it isn't physically possible to do some these flourishes. this is why they look so horrible! the original flourishes are lovely if you ask me, very well done because they are motion captured. believe me, the last thing i want to do is bash the animators, they work hard, and who knows what could have happened between management, direction, higherups, beaurocray etc etc. we don't know, but the animation suffered.
i would suggest sony go and hire the lovely lady whom they used to motion capture dances again so they can fix these flourishes and perhaps salvage a few. (the formal ballerina would be one). they are making plenty of money off of us by now, i'm sure, to be able to afford this lovely lady to dance for a week, which i think would be more than enough time to capture her movements.
if they can't do that, another problem i noticed was that the speed of these new flourishes are way, way, way, way too fast. this causes them to look sloppy. add more frames and slow the framerate pass down. the leg goes up too quickly. add about 5 or 6 more frames or so so the animation becomes more smooth and just over-all slow it down!
I'll be brief. I dislike them all, strongly. Even if they were the right tempo and smooth I would dislike most ofthem. A few are little more than a hop from one foot to the other.
As others have stated, I am grateful that we got the attention and so soon, but really I was much happier with the old reused and mismatched flourishes. With these, whenever I hit them by accident (the only time I hit them), I cringe and wait for the inevitable laughter from my audience. ![]()

Please make the ugly flourishes go away.I promise to never, ever, ask for anything again.
Ha ha - the new flourishes are so terrible -- but I use them for comic relief on my customers -- Occasionally I'll do a shout out to see how everyone is feeling, and if anyone needs a laugh ((which I did with poplock anyway cause that dance is a joke))
So then I'll do the new poplock flourishes and soon have the cantina/tavern ((wherever I am)) rolling in the floor with me...I make everyone smile wherever I go, as it is in my profession to entertain =)
It would be nice with amore fluid movement, but nobody can convince me that even the old poplock flourishes actually 'looked' good -- they do for the robot, but only me weird customers request this =) ((unless someone is feeling down))
So until they are fixed, my word of advise is have fun with them, make a joke -- if you can't laugh at yourself, you need to relax a bit -- I guess their are really serious minded entertainers, but I take dancing more seriously than anyone else...but my customers come first, and I think a man/woman coming from a battle needs more than just mindlessly watching a dancer doing exotic flourishes with no comment -- and not everyone wants to be seduced =)

I would say to work on smoothness and timing on them myself. They are to fast and jerky, which was really dissapointing for formal when the first 3 are so smooth, the rest should be smooth also.
I dont care for Rhythmic (sp) much, it has no theme to it, it is supposed to salsa like? My problem is whole dances not flowing together by their flourishes. Footloose is just footloose? lol I suppose I view it as a learning step, would redo the whole dance if I had my way though![]()
Im happy that there was a change but it needs to be fine tuned, but in all honesty they did not add anything to the dances I use most often.
Exotic on all levels needs more, its our reward for earning Master right? I feel it should really be something special, there just isnt enough to it now.
Fix timing and smoothness on the new flourishes is my vote
