Thread: The new flourishes, what ever shall we do about them?

Exotic - at least there is 4 level of this with 2-3 flourishes each so I can make it into a reasonable dance - please get rid of the fast jiggling - it doesn't work with the rest of the dance - and please when this is changed keep it in the slow smooth exotic movements area.

To be accurate about it, each variation of Exotic has 2 unique flourishes. Flo 3 is the same as 2. Flo 4 (the jiggling you mentioned) is actually a hangover from Footloose I think, it's not really even an Exotic flourish and, yes, it looks like crap when it's thrown into an Exotic sequence.

I guess I am a freak... And I have absolutely ZERO RL experience with any kind of dancing other than something like the box step, so maybe that is why I don't have problems with the flourishes that other people have. I agree, I hate footloose. Always have, always will. The only redeeming move was F7 which apparently is in popular now, where it was supposed to be in the first place.

However, I like most of the new formal moves. I especially like F4, F5, and F7. Not sure what everyone is complaining about with those flourishes. I like them.

Then again maybe when it comes to dancing I have no taste.

I haven't gotten too far as a dancer in the game yet, but IRL I am a professional dancer and would be considered one by SWG standards, since I am proficient in at least 8 dance forms including acrobaticsand have both taught and perform regularly. I'm going over to feedback and the Dev boardsoffering my services for motion capture. I will work cheap *cough* free, but don't tell any other dancers *cough*, to enhance my enjoyment of the game (that and it would look good on the Resume'). I just need to know where to send the videotape for my audition. Hmm, I would just be brazen and send one anyway, but I don't know if it would get to the right place.

Will they even listen to me? *shrug* well, probably not, but I can at least try. I KNOW I can do better formal dancing captures, since I am a professional ballerina and have done ballet for 28 years. Besides, wouldn't it be cool to have some acrobatic moves, or some Russian dancing moves(this would look great for the guy dancers). Not that you could call it by the same names we do in real-life, but maybe I can be added into some of the existing in-game dance forms.

My boyfriend was in Beta and he said the one of the devlopers who was a belly dancer did the original motion captures, has anyone else heard this? I agree the moves done with motion capture are much better than the animated ones.

Wish me Luck!!!

I have seen almost all of them and at this point I say get rid of them all. If they cannot keep the animation consistent they should not be making updates at all. It's about the same as if they made a new storm trooper droid but it looked more like barney the dinosaur. That would not go over very well just like these poor flourishes are not. They need to go back to the drawing board and get rid of some animators. If they honestly thought those looked good or even close to the original flourishes they are in the wrong field of work.

Thanks Novela,

That really is the issue here i agree. I really don't know who they have animating the dance sequences but your right, they have no sense of anatomy or kinetics.

I do realise however that getting them to look right is easier doing motion capture rather then doing key framed animation. I would prefer motion capture, but i will take "GOOD" animation too. If done right its hard to distinguish between the two.

But in any event you see what they have done to them, now the problem is what do we do?

Speaking about Poplock2, the new flourishes ( 5 to 8 ) are more a joke than anything else. The motions are too fast and look ridiculous.

Dancers aren't clowns.

Imust say, last nightI finally was able to view the new Poplock flourishes... allI can say is O-M-G!!!

Looking on the bright side,I was able to get in a good ab-workout, what with all the belly-laughing it caused myself, and my group who were watching me. At least the old Poplock flourishes, even if odd, looked like something a human being could twist its body to do. The new ones are something only Gumby could pull off.

I pray to God they don't touch the Exotics, Lyrical, Popular, or other dances that are good or even passablenow...

Change them back if possible but if they leave them, I will not ever use them.

There isn't a one , imho, worth saving.

OMG. I can't believe that some people think that these flourishes are intentional. They're horrible! The timing is off. Yes. They didn't motion capture them. Yes. Someone threw these together quickly to appease the dancing population. Yes.

As you can see, the dancing professions is NOT a main priority. Possibly these new flourishes were given to us to satiate our hunger for a full bar of flourishes. MAYBE they're working on redoing these with motion capture. If not, I will have flourishes I will NEVER use. I didn't see one that was up to par with what we have already.

For those of you who think the flourishes are fine. They're not. They were done using the model and positioning the limbs in various places. I think that maybe the artist had something to go off of, but a lot of the moves have the arms in impossible placement. There's even one that looks as if you've dislocated your shoulder. I don't even think that slowing these moves down will help.

You should add to your wish list: Motion Captured Dance Flourishes to replace the suck you gave us.

I have to say that i LOVE the new flourishes for the FORMAL dance....seeing as how that's the highest level dance I currently have. The reason I liked formal so much was that...when I dance FORMAL I equip my Rantok I got from Jabba's Themepark, and then my Formal dance turns into a form of kata. (For those who don't know Kata is a japanese word for practicing your martial arts forms...kinna like shadowboxing for a boxer) Before the patch only flourishes 1-4 of formal stayed in my "kata" theme....and 5-8 seemed out of place. Now that they have changed flourishes 5-8 on formal to fit in with the rest...I love formal even more!

I've seen the new flourishes on poplock, and i don't like most of them. But then again where most ppl don't like poplock i did like it...b/c it reminded me of my childhood breakdancing days

you guys do realise that formal only looks good to you on your screen right? to everyone else watching, they don't see the same thing... all they see is someone jerking back and forth in weird broken-up motions.

Next time your in the cantina take a moment and look arounf for yourself... you'll see what I mean. Sux.. but true.

Kata has a lot more meaning to it then just practicing martial art forms.. that is just one form of Kata. Don't get in the habit of putting the word Kata together with practicing martial arts even tho that is the most common use and practice of Kata. Even the Japaneese Tea Ceremony is a form of Kata.

Kata is a series of movements and techniques that are practiced in a pattern. Each Kata is designed to teach you something... a principle or a technique. It also has a great deal of spiritual meaning.

The word Kata means shape of form... also formal exercise. The literal meaning of the word and symbol is shape that cuts the earth, but thats more info then anyone probably needs to know.

Anyway.. to get to the point. Coming from someone who has practiced forms of Kata through their life, I find the new flourishes repulsive. Each Kata is suppose to be done at a certain tempo or speed, very particular and the speeds can vary from position to position but they always fit together. The new flourishes frankly are completely off tempo with the old ones and with the limbs moving unnatrually its just gross to watch for someone who's really picky about those kinds of things. Now if they matched the tempo of the rest of the dance, and the moves where fluid and life like, I'd probably like them a great deal.. but their just not.

Anyway, just my 2 credits on that one.

Please tho, don't put those new flourishes with the word Kata in any way, thats just insulting.

I want to start off by saying that I'm overjoyed that we got new flourishes, and got them this quickly. I think whatever response we're going to make, we need to keep in mind that we did get something that we'd asked for, and I wouldn't want to be so overly negative as to hurt our chances of receiving more flourishes or other content in the future (and thanks to the person who pointed this out to me ).

That said, I am a bit disappointed about the quality of the new moves. There are a couple that are decent as is, but there is a noticeable difference of polish between the new flourishes and the original ones. I think they are fixable though - certainly the speed issue that's been brought up already would make a big difference and would be a good place to start.

So, I say let's not have them taken away, but instead work on improving the quality. If it takes time, that's fine - I'd be more than willing to wait quite a while in order to match the quality of the original flourishes, which to me are outstanding. In the mean time, I may not use many of these new flourishes, but I at least like having the option. This is still more than we had before, which is a good thing (and you can say the same for the new missions).
