i don't have any ideas, that's not my job!!

hehe, i do try and keep a positive attitude tho. i am more of a lurker here, but on the combat prof and server forums i have been a staunch CU cheerleader.

this issue just irked me somewhat, i have a hard time staying positive in the face of what i think to be a terrible idea.

We all read what Panthu said about why the last coorospondant quit. We all read where it was stated that the only DEV who was on board with us about the AFKers ALSO wanted to get rid of entertainers all together along with recursive macros.

I think it likely you read a lot more into Panthu's post than was stated or implied. Although I can see where much of her post was openended enough that you could find ways to read into it what you want to believe she is saying.

I think every player should have the ability to control how the product of their activity in game is dispersed. Especially in that the GCW and factional alignment is the backstory of this game. When I'm buffing and healing my guys, I don't want to be helping the players they're about to go up against.

We've already seen that dependency on tips will only work for a very few entertainers. And we've seen that if there is an avenue for exploitation in a game mechanic (in this context the term exploitation does not infer that the devs have determined an activity to be defined as an "exploit"), players will take advantage of it with no regard for how it might break the gameplay of others..or even themselves in the long run.

As for cutting off my nose despite my face..I'd rather it be of my own hand than to stand there helplessly and let someone else cut me again and again.

One possible dev perspective that I think we have overlooked (& that, while I've not seen it stated by devs, I *think* I have seen it implied) is that the cantina is the focal point..not us. Cantinas were intended to be the place in cities where people gathered, went to swap tales and find hunting groups. Cantinas heal. We heal faster but the idea originally was that we had to be in a cantina to do it. Looking at the whole situation as a social concept; I can see how the cantina was intended to be the host and we, as enablers, maintain a symbiosis with the benefactors. Of course it would be great to be able to provide our services anywhere but that obviously was not the original intent. Player owned buildings such as camps, faction bases and houses were meant to allow us to heal outside of the cantinas. But notice..I can sit in my base or house and it doesn't heal me. Camps are their one concession to cantinas, in that a camp can heal you, albeit very slowly. I think the point was to make the cantina the hub of activity in the cities and we were put there to give it life.

Personally, I like the idea of cantinas having a door fee from which the attending entertainers are paid. I wouldn't expect to make it my sole source of income for my entertainer. I would still contract to heal & buff as well as for the weddings and events I perform at regularly. But I think it would be great for entertainers to know that they could make some income regardless of bot infestation or maybe not being in the mood to be totally on that day. And the old argument that they "can't find an entertainer" would no longer hold water. We would benefit from the cantinas, others would benefit from our presence there but we would no longer be imprisoned by them.

Esharra, what's going on with the 'entertainer salary' panthu was talking about?

Well, I basically have two choices no matter what anybody does. I can either roll with the punches, or I can go elsewhere. I am not implying that I will go elsewhere if I don't get my way. However, as with everything in life, most sane people weigh the advantages and the disadvantages. And those advantages or disadvantages are obviously directly influenced byhow this game is developed.

So, I mean, I really don't like the Cantina salary idea. It still doesn't really make me needed or appreciated. It's money from the sky. It's still free to the person who is getting it from me. It's me giving it to them just because I happen to be there, whether I like it or not. As Esharra's example explained, maybe I don't want to give an Imperial an edge because I am a rebel. In the Cantina Salary scenario, I still am not given that control or choice. Now, of course, in game I'm a very nice guy. I almost -never- refuse to give someone a buff now, and I probably will almost never refuse someone an inspiration buff. But, that's not the point. Ultimately, it should still be my choice, and cantina salary doesn't do that for me. It gives someone else an advantage for me being there. It does not give me any advantage at all for someone watching me.

Now, should the cantina salary thing happen, I won't be happy. But, I won't be pissed off either. I mean, I have SO gotten to the point where I have no expectations and no hope anymore. I set my expectations incredibly low so that I am not disappointed. And, should something good actually happen, then wheeee! I'll be happy. And, I'm not staying in this game just to do it, or cause misery upon myself. I'm not a masochist. I am currently still with this game because, despite all this frustration, it's still the best one I can find. It's not as good as it was for me during those first few months. But, hey, it's still better.

I just would really like the satisfaction of having a fulfilling gameplay. I know, I can't expect perfection I suppose. But, I've always been incredibly willing to compromise on so many ideas and developments. But, like most people, I do have my limits. If these buffs go in with complete passivity, then fine. I don't expect anything, so I'm not depressed. It's not going to make my gameplay worse than it already is. It will be status quo. Same frustrations and same problems that I've experienced for the last year and a half. No biggie. But, SWG hasn't retained my loyalty. I expect that if/when I do leave if things haven't gotten better for entertainers, then I expect that I won't ever buy or use a Sony product again. Again, not a threat, just a statement.

On the other hand, if they give me real viability then I will love them till the end of time.

Yes but read what PoetDancer wrote. Given the purpose of %99 percent of the buffbots, most of the will theoretically go away.

That is honestly backed up by nothing other then pure hope.

#1. They already have the accounts. Many of them are paid for by more then one player so the cost to each of them is extremely low.

#2. Many of them are also used for the extra lots. Storage ect...

#3. They can now drop Down to only one Master Elite or just novice Ent, and pick up other useful skills for an alt to have... Like Doc that no longer takes resources and have an all in one macro buff bot.

#4. We will STILL have AFK Jedi Grinders which in an all passive system will be as good as buff bot.

#5. A bot will still be there 24/7 in the same location.

#6. They still CAN do it.

We will certainly see some of the bots disappear. But all the AFK Jedi Grinders will be an more then adequate replacement for them.

Without many more details I have to say the idea of the "cantina salary" doesn't appeal to me at all. But then I've always been a bit of the odd one out when it comes to getting paid as an entertainer. Since our most marketable service was able to be completely automated by a dispensing machine and since the community changed from a "most tip" to a "few tip" environment for the majority of entertainers that I know, I have wanted our major source of income to come from mission terminals, pure and simple. Let those missions pay me 5K - 10K for 10 minutes of dancing and I will be just as economically viable as any other player on Shadowfire - well except for the one who have literally hundreds of millions of credits. It's a solution that doesn't require intensive dev resources and takes our economicfate out of the hands of others. Now if the real purpose of the "cantina salary" is to some how prevent afking the profession then no matter how much I dislike the idea, if it was what was offered as the solution then I'd roll with it, heck I'd even do the ugly jiggle flourish 4 - 8 of the exotics if it were required. I'd hope they could come up with a better system but if not, I'll take any system over simply keeping the status quo.

I'm still hoping for a cantina manager that conducts random scans and if the answer provided by the entertainer isn't acceptable, then the entertainer is flagged as attackable by all other entertainers until they speak with a trainer. But maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to try out my new Disruptor Rifle

my thought on this, grabbed from our server forum:

notice the part about Novice and Masters giving the same "buff" ... less incentive to master now.

Not to mention if its an automatic buff, less incentive to TIP entertainers now too. :/

Leihiwa

QFE to both of these

#1 now anyone with novice entertainer, which can be picked up on a whim at any time, can buff EXACTLY the same as any master dancer or musician. you are no longer even requierd to do flourishes! so now it will be an even worse case of buffbotting, because complicated macros are no longer even needed.

#2 if you can run by an entertainer who is playing and grab a buff from them without having to be grouped or use /setperf, then you can get a free buff any time and laugh in the face of entertianer who would like payment. now there is NO reason to tip, other than the kindness of your heart, and you can imagine how often that will come into play. har har. the only way aroudn this will be for entertainers to stand around doing nothing, and demand payment before even playing to guaruntee some form of compensation!

#3 outside of buffing, now we have ZERO purpose ... no healing. no way to get paid. and once youve seen our dances once or twice, it aint no thang to see it again.

if you dont see why thats bad for entertainers, you havent got your thinkin cap on.

But so far we were told "The Entertainer buffing system is so deep involved in the system, that we can't just make changes like that to it", at least thats how I always thought they said it (if I'm wrong please feel free to correct me).

Yes and no. You are right that we were told that our buffing code would need a total rewrite to get any design changes. The design changes we were asking for were approved ideas though. So, when they found the time to do the rewrite, they would be giving us those approved design changes.

Design is one thing and code is another. Honestly, players don't talk to devs very often about actual code. The only reason they told us that was so we would understand why these were design changes that were approved, butweren't happening due to time limitations.

You are also right that it is the CU that has now bought us this time to get approved design changes actually coded. They are not giving us Inspirations just because Combat Players want another buff. They could satisfy that requirement with foods/spices or Doc/SL buffs alone. They don't have to give us anything nice to do for anyone. It has always been the Ent Design to give a bonus to others though, because it goes along with our fiction of making others "feel good."

This has nothing to do with making Bot owners happy. Goodness, it came from our own proposals. There are also a good many other design options that have been approved in the past for us but were stopped for one reason or another (for example, the interactive pop-upflo ideathat was In Concept and we stopped it there) that are now being mentioned in this thread and others.

***

Again, I'm confused on the tone in here. Some things were able to be done with out touching our actual Buffing code (like that In Concept we said no to), other things weren't because they would need a total rewrite of our Buffing code or a total new set of code for anything that was going to replace our code (same diff really). We knew the big huge design changes would come with the CU way back. That's what the infamous Bard thread I posted in here was about and that's where the idea for Inspirations are largely rooted.

I don't know that Sirii's idea of crafting bonuses had never occurred to a Dev before that, but I do know that is when I started talking to them about it as a Corr. It was not the only design change I ever pitched. If it was posted in here, I pretty much pitched it at one time or another. I was an over zealous Corr, lol.... but, all Ent Corrs have always been active, so, it's just a fact we've pretty much said everything to them at least once.

Of course we can say it again, but some ideas have already been shot down at the base design level and others haven't.

***

I'm only replying because this has to do with old things. I personally talked about what the CU would mean for us in here a lot, so I don't mind pointing these older things out. Eshi of course has to say what the current word is though, so, I would suggest we all try to go along with whatever she says she needs from us now.
