Thread: Be honest, did you master dancer without ever going AFK?

I've decided that dancer sucks, but wont give it up now i've got this far into it.

Yes, the dances are cool, and i get a buzz out of performing outside of the cantina, but its just not enough gameplay for me. I've tried being social in cantinas, but its a real joke. Everyone in there seems afk (not just one or two cantinas, but the majority that i've danced in).

Something i did find very entertaining, was setting up some music on my system, and then dancing along. The vision of a short fat wookiee dancing in time to Prodigy's Smack My **edit** Up tickled me. But even then, its so frustrating trying to time the dance moves, as they just seem to start whenever they want after i press the hotkey, and linking the flourishes smoothly together is next to impossible. I'm going to persevere with this, and see if i cant record something amusing.

Has anyone considered changing the way moves are performed, so something more like the console dance games, where you have to hit the buttons at the right time on the screen? (you know what i mean). That might atleast require a little more skill, and make it less boring and pointless. Perhaps if they set the system up so that someone pulling of a skillful move healed the person watching them quicker... and extend that to the group play.

For the rest of the time as a dancer, i'm going to be afk while i sleep because i dont want to waste my time staring at the afkers.

Seems a shame, because i'm sure with a few changes it could appeal to alot more people than the die hards.

I wish I had been able to afk, but I was and remain an utter macro moron. I would jump up to go on a bio break and my ip server would dump me. It took me a few months to master dancer because of it and the last couple of days was a terrible push because I had promised my guild I would drop the cantina in our city when I did and they were waiting for me. But, mastering dancer was nothing like the mind numbing bordum of mastering tailor.

The first and only thing i did from day one on Lowca was train dancing, which i did in about two weeks and no afk'ing. Back in those days, dancing was a lot of fun, as we spent time talking to our patrons and hearing of their gaming exploits. We role played it, and it was for the most part... a lot of fun.

i built a whole PA really in order to further the entertainment profession... to give us dignity, to show our worth, to be a force in the galaxy worthy of other guild's respect.

AFK'ing was very much frowned upon... and then came the glorious holocron and the utter ruin of the entertainment industry, and perhaps the game itself.

I'm still a master dancer, andi've had master the longest being the 2nd one on Lowca to achieve ( Ekeni, who had it first is no longer playing )... which i'm proud of also. i never afk'd... and i long for the day when the industry returns to at least what it once was.

Hats off to you Mel. I see BABEs running around all the time, and it wasn't until a month ago that I found out that you were a predominantly entertainer guild. If I had known that back in November I would've sought you out

Ive mastered Dancer the first time without afk'ing (macro's sounded too complicated so i left them alone) but im mastering it for 5th or 6th time now (keep dropping it to try other things and allways go back after) and sorry to say that 2nd time onwards i learnt/ use macro for some of it, basicly i play to socialise, if i sleep i just leave it going now, with an afk tag up, This time im going to be ID / Dancer and STICK with it

I mastered dancer and image design before macro's were hardly invented, muon gold didnt exist and if it had ,,only a few had the credits to splurge on buying some,,and like all the rest that mastered in the early days,,the cantinas were truly a very fun time.

Maybe one day they will be again, but it wont be until the afkers are gone,,and there is a good chance by that time ,,most of the real entertainers will have left ,,so its not likely cantinas will ever be as fun as in the beginning,,its a sad thought!

Well, I like to think that we have potential instead of all out suckage, hehe. You are right though, there is no skill, there is no content, and our cantinas aren't even fun for the die hards atm. DDR type things have been suggested, as well as outside of cantina content, and cantina revamps. Some people think changing the class would attract the wrong kind of player for the dancer concept, which is a valid concern. I would like to see the full deal personally, lots of people who tested dancer have said the same things and I think it would be more fun to have both your kind that thinks it "would be cool if there was more stuff to do" and the die hard pure cantina social (read MUD social) types.

I'm somewhere inbetween the two I think, so maybe I don't get a real vote. Still, I think it's a real shame to hear one more dancer say this. Oh well. Try not to let the other zombies eat your brain.

Yep, I made it to Master Dancer without dancing AFK here. (Well, I might've taken a minute or two for a bathroom break, but usually sat my character right down for those.) Nor did I, or have I ever used macros, unless you count the ones that simply assign each of the Bandflourishes to a hot-key. I choose and press keys when I want to flourish or do an effect.

Of course, I've been a Master for a relatively long time now. Back when I worked my way up, the cantinas still had real live people in them and you could banter with the folks who came in and generally enjoy each others' company. Now when I go back to my beloved cantina in Moenia, the place is usually totally EMPTY. Or maybe there will be one or two AFK macroers there. Sad.

Back in the day, I remember our biggest gripes being all the ground-shaking when the Imps would come to raid the city and all the pets and AT-STs were tromping around. Now the only cities that have any activity are places like Theed and Coronet and the activity is not even 'action' it's a few hundred people spamming about their vendors or trying to hawk 'Eyes of Mesra' as rare items that you'll never find in-game again. This is Star Wars? Not the one I saw. Give me thundering AT-STs and Rancor any day!

So while I never AFK'ed, I will say that the environment has really changed a lot since the 'good old days.' I expect it would be a lot more difficult (though hopefully not impossible) to find the kind of fun working my way up through the Entertainment professions as I did back when things were new.

As a fairly new player, I must say that i am guilty of using afk -- when I leave for work and when I go to sleep. BUT I try to make sure I am not in prime dancing space and when I am home, I am at the keyboard interacting with everyone else. It does get quite boring sitting in a cantina full of afk performers and wish I would have been around for the days when it was rare.

Please don't think we are all just lazy....it is just how we were taught when we started. Hard to give up once you are hooked....

Never, Ever did AFK Dancing. If I had to go afk for something while dancing I'd go sit in a chair until I get back. Its a point of Pride with me. I might run in the other room and refill my coffee cup but I can't ever remember being away for more than maybe 30 seconds. Short enough that our conversations continued uninterupted.

So did I Master Dance without AFK Dancing? You BETCHA!!!!

Honestly, yes, I did master dancer without going afk. What would be the point of becoming a master dancer if you don't enjoy what you're doing? Oh right, holos and buffs.

I salute people who don't tip afk dancers! /cheer
