Thread: Be honest, did you master dancer without ever going AFK?

In the begining, I only danced live at empty catinas. Mos Entha was the only cityI could start in when I created my char, stupid bug, and that where i stayed with the same 3 entertainers for a month or so. Eventually I stumbled into a crowded cantina and got a lot more exp in a full group (duh!). I afk'd aovernight in Theed. But hey, most of the group leaders I met wanted you to leave yourself afk. Bigger groups, more xp. Crowding wasnt a real problem though. I left Theed for Coronet where I mastered. Waytoo manypeople. Its hard to afk ina cantina that busy cause you get kicked outta the group. Once I mastered I was pretty dissappointed with the dances. Each exotic dance only has 2 or 3 real flourishes, 4-8 are the same I really like lyrical 2, i think thats what its called, you get it at master, but people say that I'm just sliding around with my arm in the air. Its a great dance, but not if everyone cant see it! Now that I have my own Cantina, I afk alot. I have a /join in my macro so my guildies can invite me for a buff. I also do all 9 of the exotic flourishes, which means i have to change dance 4 times Seperate macro for the effects, I love em. So now that I'm master, Im afk more thanI did when I was "grinding" (Poplock2). lol. kinda ironic

Oddly enough, yes, I mastered dancing with afk'ing. My kick was/is designing dances that include flourishes from the different dance styles. Having friends who were doing the same thing was a big help! A creative outlet, what can I say.

You better believe I Afk'd to master. I got this game in September and until December I was at the Keyboard. If I did anything not dancing I came back to a cantina and saw people were advancing quicker than I was. No, problem. Then player cities hit. I wanted to own my own cantina. Then the reality of having to be a Master to own a cantina and limited numbers of player cities hit me. I was going from city to city and seeing that they all already had cantinas in them and me not even a master yet. Great, at the rate I was going I would master Dancer in March and there'd be some huge waiting que to get a cantina. When I came to that conclusion I AFK'd dancer and mastered it in one week. Today, I own my own cantina and I am not a slave to dancing for XP to get where I want to go. I dance for fun, in my own cantina.

So, yes, I absolutely AFK'd to master and would do it again in a heart beat.

Yes. I mastered without afk dancing. Of course this was a lot earlier in the game when afk wasn't as promenant as it is now. It took months of leveling that way but I did it, if I had to step away from the keyboard I stopped sat down and went afk. I didn't feel it was right to set afk while dancing, nor was it realistic for roleplaying aspect. I understand people who do not have much time and need to set afk to be able to gain xp but if your character is always afk dancing, yes you can master in no time to you, but did you actually earn that Master Title. Whatever answer for that is up to your individual person. Have nothing against those that do afk dance. But I am proud of the fact that I mastered without doing so.

Mastered Dance without going AFK or buffs, or even pretty clothes. Hot pants (shorts) were the thing, until a few tailors started making the racier stuff We used to travel all over to try a find a tailor we could beg to make us some clothes more appropriate for a dancer. Flesh wraps were a shocker then... *laughs* I wont even wear one now.

Cheers,

Ania started dancing the day after launch (and wow, was that a bad launch.. :smileytongue. I danced in Theed, back when it wasn't all that populated before moving to Kaadara, which still isn't all that populated. The only time I ever afk danced was when I had to grab a drink or something quickly, and quite proud I am, yes It took me about three months to gain master, but I enjoyed every dance step of the way.. The Ahazi Kaadara cantina used to be a tight-knit group before afk'ers and then hologrinders *shudder* But no hard feelings!

So this is now probably day 3 as a dancer (0032 entertainer), and i've been struck by how tedious this is to level. I now have 3 or 4 dances which makes things slightly better (varied) but at the end of the day its the same thing:

Dance -> flourish -> get xp -> rinse repeat.

Am i missing something here?

This requires absolutely no skill, has no variation and the novelty quickly wears off.Naga

Yes, you are missing something. The mindset of an entertainer. The skill you need is the ability to socialize with every type of person that comes in that cantina and know how to handle them, cheer them up, flatter them, and yes even insult them as needed. It also helps to be somewhat of a chatterbox. I started as a dancer and loved every minute of it. I wasn't watching my experience grow, I just knew that it was growing. I was one of the few that did spend all the time at the keyboard. It took me 3 months to reach master and I cried on the day I made it, and my master did too. It was quite an event and the support I got was unbelievable. In the coming days, I was asked to be master to the other dancers too. Sweet. The money I made was also nice. I could get 20-30k per night in tips. Just tips. Mind buffing came shortly after I had mastered and the money got much much nicer. I would usually lead the group but would have to ask for time off to go shopping. This was also before holo-grinding and the cheapening of the profession.

I mastered without ever going AFK. I don't think I would do it again, however.

Much of the time, I did enjoy my time at the keyboard. Much of the time, I was incredibly frustrated with how dull it could be. Six of one, half dozen of the other, really.

I'm going to master Dancer again soon (surrendered it for Bounty Hunter). And I'll probably do at least some it AFK,.

"Ironically, while researching this piece a representative from Sony asked us to keep in mind that many of the players complaining "weren't playing the class right," and that the class was designed as a solo experience. Such a comment is indicative of the original Ultima Online mistake: not realizing that once an MMO is released to the public, it no longer belongs to the developers, it belongs to the people paying $14.99 a month for the service."

I don't think I was ever NOT AFK. I lay down and watch the monitor and the TVin case I crash but other than that I didnt pay much attention to the computer when grinding dancer.

Uhg, why is this thread still alive? The poor guy gave up shortly after posting this thread due to boredom and lack of game content for the class. I don't think he ever intended it to be a afk/atk sound off, lol. He sounded like a really nice and social person too, so no I don't really think you can say he wasn't getting the "social" part. He just wanted a little _game_ with his skill points.

And Gustafus, what crawled up yours? I may not have the "mindset of an entertainer" either, but I was really happy when I got my master title. MMO's feed off of these little feelings of accomplishment. My guild really stepped up and helped me get my last bit of EH after months of playing through dancer. It was really cool and made me feel a whole lot of squishy. That's nothing to make fun of. It was justreally nice. *shrug*

I think it's normal to get a little sentimental about any prof you really play through to master. I did BE so slow, I wanted to do cart wheels almost when I hit master. It's what makes the difference in between a grind and playing the leveling part of the game. No reason to get mean or haughty about it either way silly head.

I understand what he was going through, cept I'm on the opposite side of the profession. My very first post to these forums concerned "ok I'm in the game, what do I do?" "what is there to do?"

I had started as a scout/marksman (like 90% of most starters) and I wandered, I just wandered around and had no idea what to do, where to start.

My post to the forum was actually a rant that was meant as "arrrrgh, I'm frustrated, why the heck did I buy this game?" but someone lent help. They had a long list of things to do and one of them was "start an entertainer". I tried that and was amazed at how I took to it, like a fish to water. I'm a chatterbox so I had a great time talkng everyones ear off and just being plain entertaining. That really was me, and people liked it, I liked it, my bank liked it, and my wardrobe loved it. Eventually I evolved to CH, BH, 2H swords, BE, Medic. I've visited all the planets and have fought with the fiercest creatures and met some of the greatest people and some of the rudest as well. What a world what a world.

Bottom line is, there is a variety of things in the game to do and if none of them appeal to you, then definitely don't flog yourself daily by showing up all the time. Remove it from your hard drive.

No Wokka, this should not be the bottom line of _this_ thread. This was not an aimless noob with starter profs. The original poster had mastered TK because it looked cool and mastered Doc for a holo. He said he played through both and a lot of scout. He was not a grinder. He found that he was not using his combat skills anymore because he was mostly hanging out in cities buffing and socializing. He said "what would be a better use of my skill points and be fun while I'm already socializing and buffing hanging out in cities... oh I know, Dancer!"... when he actually started leveling dancer he wanted to play it, not grind it, just like he had his other profs. Unfortunately, he came to the same conclusion most people do and found it was much more rewarding xp and time wise to AFK level.

If there had been game content that offered the same amount of xp gained or even any skill involved in the dancing, he would have played it that way ATK. He liked playing the game and wanted to play dancer too. He was not a noob like you and I were when we started dancing that had the time to run around and play with other profs on the way to master dancer, he wasn't looking for general game content... he just wanted a complement to his doctor and dancer really should have made sense.

By his third post in this thread, he had given up on any hope of ATK play and said he would be on zombie mode for the rest of his leveling. I thought that was a real bummer and really showed how hurting we are for a "game content balance" pass. I think it is even more sad that only two people acknowledged his last post... the guy most likely mastered dancer at the normal 3 days afk rate and may never look at the dancer forum again because he was told there was no more content to look forward to no matter how high you get in dancer... and still, the atk/afk sound off goes on, long after the dude has made his (pretty logical) conclusion about the prof.
