Thread: At what point is it considered sexual harrassment?
The ESRB box on the packaging carries no legal weight. SOE's terms of service on the other hand, *do* carry some, and as such, they win... and the harrassing player loses.
Besides, from the way she described the incident, it didn't sound much like RP... and once you've asked someone OOC not to do something, the RP is *over*. Period. End of statement. And anything after that point *is* harrassment. And if you don't understand that, it's *you* who shouldn't be playing these games.
Yeah, that's a strong statement. But I won't back down off of it.
So let me get this straight. If I don't understand YOUR point of view about harassement, then I shouldn't be playing this game? Lol. This is ridiculous... So that means that the only people that should play this game are the ones that agree with you... And you callyourself an american?
I'm not the one with the problem, buddy... There's a difference between an offense and harassement. You can be offended by someone getting in your face online. All you have to do, is turn it off. Harassement is when you don't have a way out, like in a work environment, or family.
And I really don't think you're in any position to discuss legal issues, mr. anime fanfic...
But that's only my point of view.
And I'll NEVER tell someone they shouldn't be playing a game if they don't agree with me.
"If you can't stand up for yourself, then you shouldn't be playing MMORPGs, or online games of any sort"
I"m not the one who started talking about who should be playing what.
That's all I'm going to say on this subject.
PC bountys anyone? Yea, report him for harassment, but do it the RP way too...post a bounty! (if/when we get them). A thousand creds or something to have him looking over his shoulder constantly till the hunter gets him....
Looking back at my earlier post, there is something I want to clarify.
I still maintain that if you ask someone, OOC, to stop, and they don't, then they deserve whatever they get when you report them. Besides, if SOE disagrees and thinks they didn't do anything wrong, nothing will happen to them anyway, right? So if you report them and they get in trouble, they deserved it.
However, I do also think the people suggesting that you ignore it/don't worry about have some sort of point.
Where I come from, there is a saying: "When kicked by a mule, consider the source." Most likely, the person harrassing you is a 14-year-old kid who doesn't know the meaning of half the words he's spouting at you. Even if he's not that young physically, that's about the emotional maturity level we're talking about here. If you get upset over it, you're giving him power over you. It may be temporary power, because once you report him, that power may be stripped away in the form of a ban from the game... but it's power, for that moment, nonetheless.
In a situation like this, if you can play it off in-character without it affecting you severely, I'd say do that. It keeps the power in your own hands. He can't spoil your game if you don't let him.
But if you can't--or even if you don't want to--then you're well within your rights to ask him to stop. Just to give them the benefit of the doubt, make it clear that if he *is* roleplaying, you don't want to roleplay with him. If he doesn't stop then, he's stepped very clearly outside the lines, and he *should* be reported.
I hope everyone understands where I'm coming from. If not, well... you'll have to go on not understanding, because I'm not going to argue the point anymore.
(Oh, and while PC bounties is a good idea, I doubt they'll be implemented in such a way as to make them truly effective in such a case... if they're implemented at all!)
First point. Hon I'm a Lady and I expect to be Treated like a lady. Now if you and me go off someplace and while we're alone I CHOOSE to act like a whore then fine. Treat me like one. Its a role I CHOOSE to assume and theefore I have no objections.
HOWEVER. Unless I make it clear to you that I AM choosing to assume that role for your pleasure and mine, don't assume that you can make that choice for me.
When in doubt....assume that I am a Lady unless and until I tell you otherwise.
Second Point. There's a BIG difference between Eroticism and Obscenety. Eroticism is the art of Saying something Without saying it. Obscenity is pretty obvious when you hear it and YOU know when you're doing it. The first fascinates me. The second bores me.
I have an idea how to address this:
This mostly revolves around Player owned Cantinas or Cities.
Bouncers.
Yup.. Bouncers.
Certain Characters will be allowed to 'PK' other players while in a Player owned Cantina. The Owner/Administrator will set what characters are the 'Bouncers'. (Owner/Administrators would of course, not be PK-able by the bouncers)
Now.. Most players don't die in One-hit, and you cannot fight back against a Bouncer. You either A: Die. B: Leave the Cantina/Area surrounding it.
From there, you can use a /ignore list to stop any harassing tells.
This provides work to the Big Overprotective types that play Wookies (*blinks innocently*) and want to keep the peace.
This also is a great/realistic (mostly..) way to deal with the issue.
Now.. This could be abused, however, if it is, just like in Real Life, folks will flee from the cantina, and never return. You loose all business and there is no longer a reason to have a cantina, and you go out of business.
Some other safeguards could be put into place, but I think it'd work well.
If someone gets too frisky with the Dancers/Band. They motion to the bouncer (Or hell. combat droid
) and the bouncer comes over and takes care of business. The crowd gets a lil bit of Extra Entertainment for their money. The person getting harassed gets to watch their harasser flee for their lives, or spit on their corpse if they choose to stay. Hell..Maybe even the bouncer can get tips ![]()
Whatcha think?

Yup.. Bouncers.
The ban button in my cantina will be my bouncer. *laughs*
I can assure you anyone caught in there talking this way I was talked to at the beginning of this thread to people will get the quick button tripto the door step.
I might even be nice enough to step outside if I'm not busy and let them know they can't talk that way in there and for the evening they need to move on.
They can /tell and dirty talk all they want with consent of the receiver of such talk but once "No" is said, then I get to play mother hen and tell them to scat.
Another great feature I'd love to see installedwould be an individual option is a command of /refuse service
This allows a player to /refuse service and thus the person can not be healed by them.
If enough people did a /refuse service on someone and had a hard time finding a dancer to perform then he might get a clue he's not acting in a way that he shouldn't be.
I've been thinking about this, and if I had to defend the "abuser" I would suggest this:
There can be no "sexual harrassment" in SWG without consent! You have the /ignore command; use it! If you waived your right to use this wonderful ability, then you willfully listened to what the other player had to say, and you cannot therefore complain about it.
Honestly, I am getting very frightened about people suggesting that others report anything they consider remotely off-colour to the CSR's. Frankly, it's grade school behaviour to go whining to the Principal. Use the tools available, or develop some thicker skin. If we start calling the CSR's to investigate every little thing, this game will become Vanilla-PC so fast, you won't even have time to /puke.
You know you people are realy freakin me out for one this is a game 'A GAME' your all acting like (well not all sorry) like some guy went up to this chick in RL and started stalkin her. Lemme say somethin here, the world is filled with people like this who LOOK to get offended LOOK to say OMG I cant beleive (insert event here). And it realy makes me sick. Did the moron harrass you yes, was it called for absouletly not, did he go over board ya, but did it warrant possibly losing his account over it HELL NO. I remember when UO first came out and every body was wa wa wa wa about getin PKED every two seconds after leavin town Its smellin the same here (somethin to get ripped about). And by the way by you and your friends actively lookin for this guy sendin him tells and lookin to trick him into joining hunting parties for "revenge" is not only pathetic but EXACTLY THE SAME THING YOU ARE HARPIN ABOUT "HARRASMENT" and you to should have been reported if thats how you feel about harrasment. Grow up and find a real cause to get ripped about theres people all over the world diein and stuff every day and your getin peved cuz some kid online wanted to see your ta ta's or whatever.
LAME
I have a virtually zero tolerance policy. I give them one chance, one warning, and if it's nothing too serious - and if their name is acceptable -I roleplay it out. But if they don't stop when told No, or if it's beyond acceptable to start with, first I say publically that I'm reporting them to customer service, then I fill out a detailed report and urge everyone I'm with to do the same. So far I've only had to do that to two immature little jerks, but I expect more to replace them.
People like that need to be scared by an authority figure, and since we can't get their 'daddy' to spank them, we call CS, that's our only option. I just wish there was a way to send in the last few lines of chat along with it; in EQ they have a /report command to do that - logs and screenshots are not accepted because they can be altered.
I'm sorry you had to deal with someone like that, Likeet. You tolerated more than you should have had to before finally reporting him. Anyone who supports behavior like his deserves to be banned, and I will go out of my way to get rid of them. I report every character name violation I spot as well - if the person seems decent enough I suggest they request a name change themselves, but the blatent violations get reported without warning. It is Not about them just having fun, they are harrassing others and breaking hard rules they agree to every time they log in - anyone who ignores those rules deserves to be caught and dealt with.
