Thread: AFKs are a major issue....HOW?

The /addignore is a nice tool, but it's not a panacea.
Very true. As I pointed out in my original reply where I cited spamming as my number one peeve with AFKers, I do add spammers to my ignore list. However, I seem to recall (correct me if I'm wrong) that ignore only blocks people out of your text chat log, you will still see their "conversation" or "emote" bubbles as they float by. And even if I manage to get all of the AFK spammers ignored, it is their spamming which is contributing to the horrendous lag that slows your FPS to a crawl in any major cantina. This is why I referred to it as "spatial pollution," much like noise pollution in the real world.
Frankly, most customers are not in the cantina long enough to figure out who to add to the ignore list, so many attempts at actually communicating with them will be drowned out.
The bottom line on why it bothers me so much is I remember when it was different. I spent many days and nights in Theed Cantina as a novice dancer, and people were rarely AFK. When they were, they did not put spam into their macros. Even in Coronet, it was noisy and frantic, but not because of AFK spamming. I still remember the night I was dancing in Coronet and Akinom came in for the first time. The game's first Jedi! What a circus that was.
Everybodywas at the keyboard that night, that's for sure.

Jason wonders why the average IQ level in here just spiked through the roof. Jason realizes it's because flabby just took the short bus home.

Third, if you have a hard time following any spatial conversation because of the number of messages coming through create a new chat window for tells and use that. Yet another tool for you to use to better your communications, but you'll probably come up with some excuse for not using this one too just so you can hate on AFKers some more.
Why do you assume my messages are about AFK hate? You said that spam is not a problem. I showed you how it is.
There are ways to work around it, yes. I do not dispute that. But I do point out that not everyone is as devilishly clever as you are and can figure these things out. Just because you can tackle spam doesn't mean that Newbie Neil can.

WHY are you all still responding to these trolls? Ignore them! Think of ignoring (and I don't mean/ignoresince that is all but usless) as anti-bacterial soap and wash your hands of these trolls!
Did you even post a single reply in this thread that had anything at all to do with the subject of the thread? Didn't think so. Seems you people who constantly cry about us being trolls are the ones who never post on-topic. Yeah, and we're the trolls.
Hmmm....
Since none of the parents I work with on a regular basis at the local mental health center that have children that have mental challenges would ever be caught dead hurling around degoratory terms for their children as insults to others, knowing how much they can hurt and scar people for life.Since all of them know howtruly insulting, and actually how revolting people that use those terms are,I'd say I find the claims thatsomeone who throws those terms around on these message boards on a regular basis, knowing it's where children frequentis actually one of their brethren a bit laughable.
I also find the fact that those same parents know how insulting the term "shortbus" is,I'd saythey probably wouldn't save pictures of their child's bus on the internet under that degrading name.
I'd also bet those same people would be offended by someone pretending to understand what they are going through, just to make themselves look less stupid on a message board.
Nobody is buying the story. And using those terms is very offensive to a lot of people.
Trolling is one thing, spreading messages of hate about people who have a lot more to overcome that most of us could ever even dream about is quite another.

Answering someone's legitimatequestioningof the use of degrading terms for the mentally challenged as some sort of "insult" by using another one. Now that's classic. That about sums up the kind of person we are dealing with for everyone.
Shortbus, retard, retarded, and other similar terms have been thrown around by you on these boards on a regular basis in just the posts I've seen. That's no different than insulting someone by using racial slurs, or insulting terms for sexual orientation to be meant as a put down, or an insult. It's not a"figure of speech" it's not a "joke" it's something that has no place here or anywhere elseon the planet. It's offensive to me and millions of other people worldwide that see them, that hear them, and that have to see what affects they have on people everyday or even worse, have been affected directly by them.
The fact that people, like yourself, don't see how it's spreading and propagating hateful and hurtful messages is as much as the problem as saying them.
Just because some people disagree with your opinions is no reason to make a mockery of real life challenges that millions of people worldwide face everyday.
Tell me that calling someone a "retard" or "retarded" is not the same thing as calling someone a racist term. I'm sorry to say that it is. You've used both those terms on numerous occasions on these boards when you want to insult someone. It in no way shows any respect for the mentally handicapped, much like racist terms show no respect to people of all creeds and colors. I never called you a racist, I likened you to a racist. But while you are not engaging in racist activity, you're using sterotypical and degrading terminolgy to insult someone. It's not a big leap.
By stating that myself, or anyone else, should "ride the short bus" or whatever you and your kind find amusing is in fact stating that someone who does so is notas good as yourself, should be insulted, or made fun of.While you could go back and try toinvent some other meaning that wasn't degrading, everyone knows your intent and the point you were making, and it was a veryoffensive one.
I don't find insulting and degrading comments towards the mentally challenged to be the least bit amusing. I don't find racism, sexism, or"bashing" of any kind to be amusing. It's mean spirited and lacks all imagination. It's a tool for the ignorant and uneducated, and I feel it has no place in this world.
But in closing, I wouldask that you ask"your son" if he could show you how to cut and paste and make a link on a messageboard that works. It would make your insults, however pathetic they were, at least viewable so we could all bask it's ignorant nature.
