My number one personal issue with afk-ers is spamming. People who put any type of spatial chat or emote spam in their macro, then go away and leave it running for hours on end, need to be SHOT. Any time I go into a major cantina, I have to /addignore all these people one at a time. However, even if I ignore them, they are still contributing to the lag and spatial pollution.

I have to agree with this statement whole heartedly. I loathe the AFK spam!

AFK tip begging is worse yet, if I could execute AFK tip beggars I WOULD!

Personally I do not mind AFK dancers/musicians at all, I do it myself cause its a big ask to be there in person all the time so I understand.

But I refuse to submit others to inane chatter for hours in a pathetic attempt to appear "alive" and "non-afk"

It is a problem to those who play this game for the socialising aspect of being an entertainer.

First good answer. And I can't even argue with it, because you're right. For you, it's a problem. Me, I'm a musician because of the social aspect of being an entertainer, and AFK entertainers don't diminish the social atmosphere for me in any way. In fact, I strongly believe that they enhance it. Both of us are right, because for both of us, these are our feelings. But it's not a problem inherant in the system - you just need to go where there aren't any AFKers, or work to move AFKers out of where you are. Personally, I only EVER see AFKers in the cantinas of the biggest static cities, and most of them are in the entrance. Just go to the back!

But still, AFK buffing is a problem, and easily fixed.

This is honestly like watching someone get beat over the head with a frying pan over and over again. Is it realy a hard concept? Is it impossible to accept that entertainers don't like afk players because they deract from the social atmosphere? Why is there a thread every week about how someone just can't understand why it's a problem to us. The better question is why is that thread always started by the same handfull of people. It's like the neverending circle of stupidity. Its not that they take up xp, its not that they take up tips, its not that entertainers are jealous cause an afker got master in a week, its the simplest most unbelievably easy to understand concept, that the social atmosphere which isintended bythe entertainer profession has been deminished by their prescence. Perhaps this isnt a problem to you, perhaps it isnt a problem to a great deal of players. The bottom line is this. It is a problem to those who play this game for the socialising aspect of being an entertainer.

Impossible?/addignore stops the spam. Why is it such a problem when it's so easy to get rid of?

It doesn't technically stop the spam. It prevents you from seeing it.

In many cases, these solutions are similar. But it can prevent someone else from interacting with you. Some people won't /addignore for whatever reason. Some may not even be aware of it.Others don't know who is needlessly spamming after only a couple minutes of interaction. So, Priscilla the Dancer has Snotty Sam, Callous Carl, and Inconsiderate Inca all on ignore. Newbie Neil will not.

Where Priscilla may see this:
Priscilla says, "Welcome to the cantina, Neil."
Neil says, "It's been a long day. Anyone up for a conversation?"
Priscilla says, "Sure, where do you hail from? You look familiar. Have you been to Talus before?"
Neil says, "Well, I guess no one here is entertaining. That sucks." *leaves*
Priscilla frowns.

Neil might walk in and see:
Sam says, "Tips are welcome."
Inca beams.
Priscilla says, "Welcome to the cantina, Neil."
Carl says, "HEAL PLZ!"
Sam says, "Tips are welcome."
Carl says, "Welcome to the cantina!"
Inca spins around and makes herself dizzy.
Neil says, "It's been a long day. Anyone up for a conversation?"
Inca smiles.
Sam says, "Tips are welcome."
Inca bobs her head to the beat.
Carl says, "HEAL PLZ!"
Carl says, "Welcome to the cantina."
Priscilla says, "Sure, where do you hail from? You look familiar. Have you been to Talus before?"
Inca beams.
Sam says, "I'm a bounty hunter in disguise. Tip me quickly before someone gets suspicious."
Carl says, "HEAL PLZ!"
Sam says, "Tips are welcome."
Inca bobs her head to the beat.
Carl says, "Welcome to the cantina."
Neil says, "Well, I guess no one here is entertaining. That sucks." *leaves*
Inca beams.
Inca smiles.
Carl says, "HEAL PLZ!"
Carl says, "Welcome to the cantina."
Priscilla frowns.
Sam says, "Tips are welcome."

It's easy to say that spam is not an issue when you ignore it. But the problem is that the spam doesn't actually stop. Others see the spam unless they /addignore too.

This is why /addignore has never been a good solution for harassment. One solution given when someone would /kiss, /grope, or /lick you was for /addignore. But of course, everyone else sees the person doing this to you and wonder why you don't say anything about it.

And the fryingpan hit's the skull again. Reading comprehension is another issue it would seem, Spamming was only a part of that post, you missed the entire point. And thats why we have a new afk post every week the people asking the question aren't reading hte answer.

If you did that you would quickly have an ignore list of well over 100 people. Then in two weeks when that batch is done you will have another bunh added and anothe and another and pretty soon half the server is igonoring eachother. How does that add to a social environment?

Again, because Neil might not know who the spammers are and who aren't.

My example uses only three people with exaggerated spam (sadly, it's not exaggerated for some *sigh*) to make the point. If you'd rather, I could do a more realistic example with 20 names with their own unique brand of spam, but I felt it easier to type just those five names.

One time, I welcomed someone to the cantina. He asked if I was programmed to say that. I could not be offended by that, because I know why he asked.

The /addignore is handy for those of us who spend enough time in the cantina to spot it. A lot of spam have long timers so they don't repeat every 10 seconds. You can get eight messages in a minute that all seem "legit" on the surface.

Who do you ignore upon walking into the cantina? When you first enter, you may see the following:
Priscilla beams.
Sam says, "Welcome, folks."
Bruce sings, "I got the Tatooine Blues."
Carla smiles.
Felicity winks at Bob.
Jeremy says, "Remember to tip your favorite entertainer."

The first time you see any of those, you don't know if it's spam or someone typing it out (or attached to a macro perhaps). After 10 minutes, if you see any of those repeated, you have a good idea. Who would you ignore after seeing only that? Well, maybe Jeremy for asking for tips, but he might be ATK.

Now, the best solution is to interact with the performers and pay attention to who reacts. But some people react by smiling or nodding, so that might get lost in the garbage. Even a more specific message like, "What brings you here, Bob?" can get lost in the sea of spam.

The /addignore is a nice tool, but it's not a panacea.
