Thread: Concerned with adult situations
Arfindel, the Feds would disagree with you on that. Cybering in game is the same as cybering in a chat room and can be very real for the participants. If it was all just fiction than the feds would not prosecute people that cyber with kids in chat rooms, but they do. This game is basically a graphical chat room.
Now.. suggestive dance moves and clothing are something else entirely and really, if a person doesn't want their child exposed to that than don't let them play the game.

Just for the record though, I've seen a lot of statements that this is an 18-and-up only game. That is not entirely true. The ESRB rating is Teen, not Mature, which does not prevent minors from actually purchasing the game in the store. The TOS states that the account must belong to an adult, but it does allow for a minor to play on an account that is paid for by that minor's parent/guardian. So there can and will be minors playing entirely within 'the laws' set forth for SWG.
Caldrys,
You can actually get the exact outfit worn by the dancers in Jabba's Palace in the movie. I believe it's called an Exotic Leotard and can be made by a master tailor. They look really cool and it's exactly what I picture a cantina dancer wearing in SWG.

If you have kids you must watch them and monitor thier activities. Im not responsible for other peoples kids. I dont want kids,I certainly dont want to cater to yours. Please lock this thread before i get nasty, and no i dont condone sexual harrasment, that is bad, even in a game. just dont bring kids into this when it was YOU that was offended. PLEASE.
I question how players can judge a persons age and then perform in adult content.
Celixia, I've been around the internet and IRC for years, and while my intuition is not 100% (don't tell my husband), it's pretty good. I can usually tell by talking whether the guy is young. If he's not young but just really immature (or stupid), I err on the side of caution.
Personally I've never been the kind of person who linked sexuality with morality - to me, morality is more about lying, stealing, or hurting others. But if two consenting adults want to RP that way in private, I don't think any of us has the right to judge them. But that's just my opinion.
Still, the point is a valid one that this is a "T" game and, as such, there are a lot of teenage kids playing. In view of the aggressive way the FBI and local authorities have been pursuing online predators, I would urge anyone thinking of it to be extremely careful! You don't even have to be doing something wrong to be brought up on charges these days, it seems.
You know what bothers me more than being hit on while I dance? The propositions are part of the territory, and I can take it in stride. No, it's not the customers at all -- it's the number of half-witted illiterate twits who think dancing in their underwear and publicly soliciting or /emotingsexual favors is appealling. Most of these twits are actually guys, I'm sure, and for the most part either very young or very socially regressive. It wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit if the real dancers just started boycotting the twits - refuse to train them, refuse to group with them, and freeze them out of the business. The rest of us would be much better off.
Sex in itself in roleplaying characters shouldn't be an issue at all. Unlike the real world, no one can 'force' you to do anything you don't want to in this game. It's a choice two people make willingly, and if that's how they enjoy playing the game, then i have nothing against that.
It's funny to me that people aren't offended by players killing each other in pvp, slaughtering countless thousands of animals a day and exploiting a planets natural ressources down to 0%. Yet, two people wanting to engange in a sexual fantasy bothers them.
It's the age old question, what did man do first...kill...or procreate? To me, sex is natural. I'm not saying perversion of sex are natural, but what a man and a woman chose to do in 'private' is completely natural and normal.
You say you wouldn't let your kids play in a game that involves sex. But what about violence? It doesn't have to be rated 18 to be violent. Punching, kicking, shooting...it's all violence. Wether you have blood or not. So it's ok we have children in this game running around killing ANYTHING that they can attack, but hey...if someone brings the notion of sex to there "in game character" that's a problem.
I would hope that the people who do chose to roleplay sexual fantasies have enough discretion and common sense not to randomly proposition people. Walk up to a woman irl you just saw across the room, ask her if she wants to have sex, see how quickly the bouncers will throw your ass out of the club.
Now, get to know this woman, buy her a drink, talk to her, dance with her. Exchange phone numbers, go out to dinner sometime...that's what people need to learn, romance and seduction. Sex in itself will and does get stale, boring, common. But the anticipation, the build up, the seduction between two people...that's what make's it interesting and addicting.
So, to all of you who are skipping everything i wrote to just this last part, this is what i'm saying. Use moderation, common sense and a little maturity in the matter. If it's just sex you want, i'm sure you'll find dancers who will do it for money. (I've seen enough.) Otherwise, try a little romance and seduction. It won't hurt, trust me. And if the entire notion of sex offends you on moral grounds, then don't go into cantina's or to organized parties. Stay in the wilds, kill things, or stay in your shop and craft and sell. No harm no foul.
Don't trample on someone's right to roleplay sexual fantasies simply because there's children in the game. Instead, if you find something offense, message them, make sure you state you are OOC and let them know that they are going a bit too far.
Now, put the torch down, the witch hunt is over.
It's funny to me that people aren't offended by players killing each other in pvp, slaughtering countless thousands of animals a day and exploiting a planets natural ressources down to 0%. Yet, two people wanting to engange in a sexual fantasy bothers them.
Wow, Aleksandr, that one is a keeper. VERY well said!
You know.. I have to say that the "children play this game" comment is way over used. Yes children play this game, we all know that. My 12 year old son plays this game as well and loves it completely. He and I are both entertainers and have bothplayed and danced in the Theed Cantina for hours ata time and with the exception of one guy that came in and went from girl to girl saying "HI" and "How old are you?" um.. I've never had a problem.
Now as for children playing.. my son choseto be a wookiee because most people do not expect a wookiee to say much. For RP sake.. he's perfect for the role heh. He says very little and just stands there enjoying his music and doing flourishes. But I watch his chat and I also look over his chat logs. If I ever saw someone causing him any upset because of sexually explicit comments, I would be the one to send the /tell telling them just where the tire hits the road. And if they chose not to listen to me.. you bet your fanny I would /report them into oblivion until they were gone from the game.
Its a matter of respect not sex. If someone says no and the other person doesn't respect thatenough toleave it alone... Shame on them and they better hope they didn't do it to my child.. or me for that matter. Trying to stop this kind of behavior in game is impossible and would be pointless to even attempt, so be the adult and be prepared to defend your child like you should. If you have no children and your just barking the old "but children play this game too" nag.. get a life and have a child of your own and stop using ours as your excuse to censor other people into behaving in "your" little fantasy world.
Sorry for any spelling errors.. my spelling sucks and i'm too lazy to check it hehe.
There is a file I believe that my husband found when looking for my son's chat logs. He's actually the one that does the "chat log police" on my son lol so I will ask him to post here and let you know where he gets it from.
When I have to do chat log police duty.. most of the time my son is in the game at the time and you would be amazed at just how far the log goes in the chat window. Not to mention (and I don't know if this was intended or a bug) when we log his character in.. his chat is still there from the last couple of times he was in game so its very easy for us to monitor it that way too. I hope its not a bug lol.. because it realllly helps us out.
parents cant monitor children 24/7
Maybe they shouldn't have had children then?
Parenting includes both Monitoring your Children, as well as teaching your Children how to make good decisions in life when they cannot be monitored. Parents should certainly give a Video Game that their child wants to purchase more then just a cursory glance, especially an online game.
This behavior is not acceptable when considering that young children play this game.
Young children should not be playing this game without parental supervision. The games has an ESRB of T which I disagree with, and it's likely based on the game without thinking about the online component. But, to play the game you do have to have a valid credit card, which means that a parent had to be involved at some point. With the rising understanding of what goes on online, parents really should be prepared for what can happen with their children online, the kind of people they might meet.
And why do we note this particular aspect but completely ignore the swearing, the rudeness, and the hundreds of thousands of other things that you would be subjecting your child to by letting them play this game online? Parents far to0 easily let their children have the run of the internet ... and it's certainly not the Parent's responsibility to make sure their children don't go into dangerous situations.
