Thread: How can I practice my profession any longer?!
Well as for getting away from what the timeline is supposed to offer...
I don't remember many melee characters from the movies (maybe those space orcs in Jabba's I guess), did not see anyone use a stimpack ever, did not see anyone wear armor except for stormtroopers (yes and Jango and Boba), did not see stormtoopers take 20 shots to the chest and live despite their armor, I remember something in the movies that dealt with outer space, which this game clearly does not have and at this rate never may have, must we go on? I can ya know...
If they are going to let even one player be a jedi, they must have the possibility open to everyone. I always thought it would be better if either the requirements changed over time, or it was something so abstract that it could not be recreated (like wearing a certain type of clothing and being at a certain location at a certain time and then you get the unlock message a random # of days after that, so no one would EVER realize specifically what they did in order to unlock). But the problem is obvious: A large % of the player population wants to play a Jedi regardless of the permadeath, the grind to unlocking, or the time-line implication that there should be very few if even any Jedi in the universe at this time.
So SOE could be loyal to the movies and EU and have a good 30% of its player base cancel tomorrow... or they can accept the fact that its just a game and if it does not strictly follow the movies, who really cares so long as the player base (the client) is happy? If you ran the business what would you do?
How many people will REALLY actually quit once the immersion factor is blown from seeing a bunch of Jedi running around? 2%? 1%? That is far less than the people who would leave if the potential for achieving Jedi were taken away.
I also think, and I hate to say it, that Permadeath should be just that, Permanent, and that you lose your FSCS slot. That way Jedi would not sell their deaths to bounty hunters or run through town dueling everyone for fun because they would lose all the work they gained. This would turn even more people away from the 4 month grind to Jedi that they could lose in 4 hours. Of course again, people would quit.
Why did they give out Xmas holocrons? Because people were ready to quit because the holocron drop sites were heavily camped.
It all comes down to money. If you were getting a chunk of the profits from SOE, I bet you would be thinking the same thing.

The thing is, that for power-levelers, grinding IS the only thing they know how to do. They never stop to think about what they'd want to do with their time AFTER they reach master, or jedi, or whatever.
What happens when they reach that goal that they've grinded, and power-leveled, but never actually played? They don't know what to do anymore, because there's no more skill boxes to fill, and they scream that there's no content.
Have the jedi-slaves thought about what the game will be like when half of all the players on the server are jedi? They won't be special or uber. What will happen is they'll be tired of grinding, scream about the lack of content with a "now what," and cancel their accounts for WoW or FFXI, or whatever the next new game is so they can start the power-leveling all over again.
SWG is going to eventually count on the loyalty of the long-term players who login for socializing and fun, and don't pay so much attention to XP. IF we've already left because our professions were destroyed by holocrons....
You cant really think that do you?
Yes power-gamers are power-gamers and there is no real high end content (because, like I said from day 1, any game based on crafting and PvP is basically doomed to long-term failure... once a player hits the maximum skill unless there are cool items in the game that can be FOUND, not crafted, or really cool things to kill that take some thought and preparation, people will get bored and quit) and but for the shot at a Jedi those people would have quit anyway.
I have heard that many people who have unlocked hardly even play their Jedi. Once the novelty of the lightsaber sound wears off its just another grind, but with Permadeath and lack of socialization due to TEF. There are people who actually play their main character more and go to Jedi once in awhile and are not obsessed with getting to Jedi Master. What would a Jedi Master do anyway? Sit at home like Old Ben did? Go to town and wait for 30 AT-ST to finally take him down?
No matter what direction SWG goes they are going to lose a chunk of their players to WoW, and then EQ2 (of course I think that is also SOE so they dont mind that transition).
I admit that the power-gaming community is a small % of the total population, but its probably larger than the role-playing population. I cannot really see anyone thinking that SOE will have to depend on the people who treat the game as a virtual chat-room to keep them afloat in 6 months. If thats the case may as well turn the servers off today.
One-star away folks. I laugh every time I see a 1-star on my post it just shows how ignorant the community is. Argue the points if you disagree. Or maybe, deep down somewhere in your heart, you know I am right and cannot refute what I say and it makes you so mad your mouse pointer goes screaming to the little white circle under #1 which makes you feel somewhat better for a little while. LOL so sad.

Do you honestly think any of the hologrinders, even if they stay at the keyboard, stick with a profession they grind through on the way to Jedi?
"The only 2 issues there are that I can admit are valid issues regarding holo-tainers or afk-tainers are: 1) Lag...2) Rude entertainers."
So...all those people saying they are socializers in a sea of empty husks masquerading as people, that it ruins their fun and gameplay, that they no longer have anyone to interact with and it's the interaction that held their interest...you're saying their problem isn't a valid issue?
"Do you want to be the only one online dancing in an empty cantina?"
Are you aware that many of us feel that way right now, even though there may be 30 people in the cantina?

Pickles... I just dont understand your point of view.
You like to socialize. You socialize with other social people. Where are those people? They cannot socialize with the zombies can they? They are probably still out there. Find them! They probably still go to the same cantina they went to before hand. I honsetly fail to see how the AFKers ( barring rudeness factor ) forces people to not be social.
Moreover, afkers tend to congregate in Coronet and Theed as they all want to be in 20 person groups and be permitted to afk until the servers reset. Why can't you go to Bestine or Anchorhead, or Dantooine or Dathomir where people frequent often only to find no entertainers there and no way to heal their wounds? Sure they are combat types and less likely to social but if someone has 300 BF they will have to sit there a few minutes anyway, and I am sure you can strike up conversation with them. Why is this a bad thing?
Once I unlock my slot, which may take forever and a day, I am not going to play my Jedi 100% of the time. I understand the novelty will wear off, and there is not real goal anyway. Make master? Why? What then? Will I get to kill the emporer? No. I will still be hunted like a dog. Fight other Jedi? No. Why risk 1 of 3 precious deaths against someone who is better than me because they duped credits to buy 15 krayt pearls when I have 0.
I will play both characters. The Jedi more at first obviously, but then I am going to go back and probably take up a non-combat role (architect is my thinking at the moment), maybe open a small shop run a small business, dabble in resources etc. Personally I will not go back to entertainer. That is not to say that other people feel the same way. I feel many people will go back to their main characters and similar to me want a non-combat alternative to their Jedi character. I mean who would go back and play another melee character? Maybe a small handful of people who want to kill Krayts for pearls sure but I think a lot of people want to be able to do something a little different.

my idea of a good time is to go to a cantina with my friend and try to force my way into someone else's group. i lay on the guilt trip if they don't let me in. i do the same thing with hunting groups, but instead of targetting afks i target noobs, or people just out for SL xp, or whatever suits me at the time really.
had i been in the situation that groupleader was in, (which i am never in, mind you, since i know it's possible to dance 'with dignity' in places other than horribly useless cantina) i would have told you a) **edit** off. b) welcome to my addignore.
it's just a shame that leader had to listen to you open your mouth more than once.
I can't, most of the people I knew when I was growing up as a dancer either changed professions or left the game. The top reasons stated for this when asked were "lack of tips/respect" and "AFKers". I'm not making this stuff up. If I could find a popular cantina with lots of ATK entertainers, I'd be there every night, but I can't find one.
"Why can't you go to Bestine or Anchorhead, or Dantooine or Dathomir where people frequent often only to find no entertainers there and no way to heal their wounds?"
Most of the time I do find an AFKer there, but yes I could strike up a conversation with the random person entering looking for healing, but they're gone in 10 minutes and I won't see them again for hours, if at all. The other entertainers are what made the cantinas fun to be in because they became your friends, you got to know them, had conversations every day, had fun with them because they were there for long stretches and were your peers. The customers are not AFK, the other entertainers are.

Because it ruins the atmosphere. We used to have groups of 20 entertainers interacting with each other having fun,and enjoying the game and each others' company. Now the only way to get 20 entertainers together is to plan a player event 2 weeks in advance and spam it on the player events forum. The cantina's aren't fun anymore, that's why none of us go there to meet each other and socialize.
Meeuki, you're the reason mature players are leaving the game. I keep wondering why so many people like you choose to pay for a multi-player game so the can grind xp and tank mobs all by themselves. Now maybe I begin to see.
Is it that you feel so ineffectual and powerless in your real life, that it somehow makes you feel strong and potent to log in and grief other players with your anti-social attitude?
Now why would you come in here to a board for a profession you don't like and don't want anything to do with and spew insults like that? Your previous post was one of the few from a holo-tourist that was polite, intelligent, and articulate. Please explain why you felt it was helpful for you to get nasty.
BTW, I don't own a fleshwrap.

Please, your not that important.
Well that about sums it all up don't you think? Thanks for your wonderful support
on an issue that has drastically changed our profession. When will anyone understand
that this IS a serious issue. Perhaps when there are no more "true" entertainers left
and all you have is afk bots that could care less about you, your BF or that mind buff
you send me tells for. (using YOU here in general, not specifically targeted to any one
person). If all you want is the afk macroing, adolescent licking, and perpetual whining
about tips, well, guess what...YOU got it, in the biggest way SWG could have dreamed
for this profession.
For me personally, I'll danceformy ownpleasureand my friends and for those
who want to be in my "oh not so important" presence.
AmonTdow, since you're obviously on Scylla, tell me your in-game name.
meeuki, shouldn't you be back on the bounty hunter boards complaining about the nonfunctionality of BH droids? With all your board hopping, one would think your bridge gets jealous...
