Thread: My vote for replacing Poplock2

Poplock has no less to do with 'Star Warsy-ness' than "Footloose" or "Popular" do, but don't get hung up on the name. I've seen people do cute little rp comments about having learned it from a droid on Tatooine when someone refers to it as the "robot" or whatever else.

That being said, unless some dramatic changes are instituted as changes begin to be put into place for dances(ie, the upcoming update), I don't see a need for ANY of the '2' dances. Outside the exotics, and perhaps lyrical, the differences between 1 and 2 are so insignificant. I was part of a performance tonight with another dancer who did not yet have Footloose2.. he did 1, I did 2, and as I ran bfs, the differences were minimal - the gist of the flourishes themselves are nearly identical in every case.

As for this dance? I don't mind it, but then again, I'm not forced to use it now, either. I actually choose it over some others when folk is played though, because it seems to be just the right balance between fast and slow that fits with the song.

Just my 2c worth.

I could live without footloose and poplock. I would much sooner see other more visually interesting dances. But I like poplock2 sometimes, and the flourishes for it are really fun. I cannot say that I enjoyed being stuck with it for one entire skill level, but if they make the change recommended by the dance correspondent to allow dancers to get identical experience for all dances according to their level, I think a lot of dancers would still dance some poplock2.

Sinda says:

With 2 poplocks, x8 flourishes, that's 16 flourish spots wasted on a cultural fad-dance from the American 20th century that has nothing at all to do with the Star Wars genre.

I guess that's my main complaint -- if entertainment is the window dressing in the game, meant to help immerse players in the feel of Star Wars, it's hard for me to picture Obi-Wan break dancing to "Beat It".

And Sinda says:

I love most of the dance animations in this game, but it's hard for me to understand why they would have taken something so dorky as Poplock instead of other dances like Salsa, Flamenco, Jazz, Ballroom, etc. The world of dancing is huge, filled with beautiful interpretations of music in movement. Why pick an animation that looks like you have rogor mortis?

So..Obi-wan wouldn't dance to Michael Jackson, but he would to Ricky Martin? Have I got this right now?

Seriously though, lighten up. Some dances you like, some you don't. It's no biggie..

Do you actually think Ricky Martin invented Salsa? It's a derivative of Mexican Folk and was invented before Ricky Martin was a gleam in his daddy's eye.

Please don't tell people to lighten up. That's belittling of their viewpoint. If this isn't an interesting subject for you, don't read it.

One more post before I get back to work -

I didn't like Poplock at first. However, it is one of the dances that men can do without looking completely silly. Also, I disagree with the argument of it being part of American pop culture and that it shouldn't be included. Have you seen the clothes they wore in the classic movies? They have '70s written all over them.

Then we turn around and say, but let's include salsa and ballroom, etc - while I think that's a great idea, I don't see why more 'classical' forms of dance are any less Star Wars-ish so it kind of throws water on that whole argument.

I'd love to see more dances. It would also be interesting to see 'couples-style' dances. Wouldn't it be cool if you could do the tango with a partner for a performance? /bandflourishes are great for performances, but Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers didn't do exactly the same thing all the time, did they? Dips, twirls, all that would be fun.

Of course, that may not be technically feasible, but I'm not a developer. It's just my place to throw out ideas now and then.

So, instead of replacing Poplock, how about adding _more_? Leaving it in won't hurt anyone, unless having an extra dance makes us dancers overpowered and throws off the entire balance of the game, throwing the servers into complete chaos.

Sinda if you really want to get down too it all the dances are from our world and could be argued don't fit Star Wars Genre. Its not just poplock, if you want to use that arguement then you loose Lyrical, Footloose, Formal, Popular as well as Poplock, all of which are easily traced to dances in the real world here.

For most women I know Exotic and Lyrical are the most commonly requested dances, for guys tho dances like Poplock do pretty well for them. I totally agree with wishing that the dances as a whole where more creative and diverse in nature. Out of what we have tho I hardly think Poplock is even close to our biggest problem.

Now you're onto something!

Apparently it's only the dancers I work with on Chilastra who despise Poplock - the responses to this thread are a surprise to me. Maybe now is the time (Ravenmist?) to start asking SOE if it will be possible some day to add more dances to the game?

I also have thought about the idea of couples dancing, and while it may be technically difficult wouldn't it be the schizz if they could pull it off? Then we really could waltz, tango, etc

For now I'd be happy if Exotic had more than 2 flourishes. The rest are just retreads of the basic flourishes and do not fit the dance at all. The animation transitions could use a little work, but mainly only on a couple of dances (thinking mainly Formal here)

. Out of what we have tho I hardly think Poplock is even close to our biggest problem.

No- and for that matter, Dancers don't have major pressing issues in the way that Commandos do, for example. I fully expect us to have to wait a year or so to get any kind of major lovin' (the mega-patch upcoming is great but it's not "mega" for us).

To me, our biggest problems are the same as other players - lag, client crashes and connectivity. Fix those and I'll be content just working on a wish list until our turn really comes.

Don't get rid of poplock2, the guys love the robot dance. I have a routine with this dance and it is awesome. I start doing poplock2 and every dancer in the room follows, very complimentary. LOL It takes alot of work to get the timing right, but it can be done to make an excellent eye catcher to the customers. Then, again I have loved all the dances once I figured the timing out...even Footloose.
