I have recently taken up a combat profession - woohoo! As a dancer and artisan/tailor, I had absolutely no trouble at all getting a player to teach me a skill box. I must come across solidly as female as I have noticed an immediate change of tone following the "hey dood" occassionally and have a female char. What is really really getting to me is that now that I am runing around asking for lessons on combat skills, I am getting absolutly no responses on anyone willing to teach me a box
I spent an hour yesrerday back and forth at Theed and Cnet starports asking politley and not so politely for someone to teach me and am completely and totally ignored. What was really interesting, was when I asked to be taught a medic skill during this same time, 3 players who had up the combat tag I had been asking about (ppfftt) ran over and offered to teach me! I ended up going to buy my combat box from an NPC, burning up some of my profit.
Ya' know?? If we women have to fight 3 times more to make credits for the NPC's, that explains why we are 3 times as good LOL

Yeah the "u must be a Todd" stuff gets old... If there weren't so many guys lying about their gender while playing female characters and so many guys looking for real women while playing the game... This wouldn't even BE an issue.
This is supposed to be a Role Playing Game, not a dating service.

A friend and I actually started calling female toons played by males "Brians". This is because of something that happened a long time ago..
We were outside Eisley in a little village that sprung up there (before player cities, vehicles or mounts). A random, scantily clad twi'lek female is surveying on the doorstep of the house we shared at the time, not being able to afford the maintenance on a medium by ourselves. One of us (I forget who, now) says over groupchat that we bet £5 that it's really a guy.
So my friend pulls out his droid to heal her wounds. His droid is called Brian.
The twi'lek says, typos included: "LOL! Yuo called yur driod Brian! That's my name!"

Heh... personally, I don'tDO in-game dating... although I may admire or even flirt with a well made male avatar (and not care if the player behind it is male or female since it is the character that I am admiring and not the player).

Never experianced this on Farstar to be honest. Im sure its mostly a US thing, ive gone through two games (EQ + SWG)where on US servers to begin with andi get asked often if im female in RL, and when on Euro servers, either people are too shy to ask or they just dont care one way or another.
If asked by someone who i dont really knowi usually respond like 'You wouldntneed toask me a question like that unless you planned on meeting me in RL, Since im in the UK and your in the US were not going to 'bump into' one another, so i really dont see the point in your question' (mostly because id rather wind someone up than answer a stupid question)
if its someone i known online for a while and trust.I just tell them im a Woman and a Psychiatric Nurse, but dont expect anymore RL questions. (had a stalker once who a RL friend gave my phone number too, so i been carefull ever since, so i wont say anything further than my gender/proffession in RL)

Ok, this is going to be a little strange but I'm a guy and I have 2 toons. Onone serverI play a Rodian male (former musician) and onanother I playa female Twi'lek (Entertainer/aspiring dancer). I found that as a male entertainer, I got zero respect and littlethanks and tipsfrom most people. I never AFK'd, so I was always talking to people and just having fun. After a few days, I had a regular crowd wanting to listen to me play, and even started to tip me well. I flirted with the girls just enough to get their attention, and even became friends with several of them ( I dont't know they are female IRL, but I really don't care if they are or not). As for the guys, 2 of them are Guild Founders along with myself. More and more people came to the cantina to watch and listen to me jam. When ever I teamed up with a female dancer, regardless of their level or race, the only thanks or tips I got were from my usual crowd. I left musciain short of mastering it after a rather nasty incident outside the Mos Eisley Cantina. On Valcyn, my female Twi'lek gets a lot of attention from the people coming in and out. She made 100k in tips in one night, surpassing my Rodian's high of 20k in one night, and I've been playing her part time for 2 days! I have noticed a huge difference in howI get treated as a female toon.Every guy that comes in and I smile at starts to flirt with me right there on the spot. They tend to treat me like I'm not capable of understanding how to play the game. I've been playing for about 4 months now and while I don't know everything, I do know a fair amount of things about the game. It's really sad that people feel they have to treat women with such little respect.
On my primary server, my toon happened (by luck) to meet a female entertainer in a cantina. She also happened to be ATK then and we started to talk. We have become great friends and even have our toons living together. We discussed how we wanted to approach that and we felt ok with having our toons in a serious relationship. In a very funny twist of fate, I joked about her coming over to another server as a male and she did. I told her to surprise me, I didn't want to know what type of toon she was making. I was in the cantina, doing my thing and I saw a new patron. i smiled at him and he responeded with a tell saying how sexy I was. I was so surprised at how brazen he was with it, i couldn't respond with more than a /blush, and then the next tell he sent revealed that he was my female friend. It was so funny. Now we are going to be a musical act, I'm going to dance while he (she) is going to be a musician. We didn't get many people or tips to us directly last night, not enough patrons in the bar, but we enjoyed it very much. I really enjoy her company and I truely respect her in all aspects. Yes, we flirt a lot with each other *blush* and it is all consentual and welcomed.I've helped her out with a few things that she didn't know and we enjoy doing a lot of activiteis together, from group hunts with my guild to hunting dates together to going to Vreni Island on a virtual date to exploring planets together.
I know this a strange post, but I just wanted to say that there are some guys out there who truely respect and appreciate you girls who like to play this grand game. I wish there were more people that would have the same respect and appreciation for women players out there. BTW, one of my friends is a female melee specialist (has mastered TK/Fencer/Swordsman/Pikeman but not at all one time) and has beaten me several times in duels and each one I was more than honored to lose to such a powerful and beautiful woman.

I have written this before but as the above male gamer noticed, it bears repeating: "They tend to treat me like I'm not capable of understanding how to play the game. " I get the same thing. In fact, I think it is deeper ingrained in classic gender roles than most people think.
As an example, I was role playing a week or so ago with another female (IRL) who was playing her well established male musician character. As a player, I have for the last year split my time between dancer and the combat classes, I became force sensitive fairly early on. Thisfriend was pretty new to both combat AND the village. It was late and she was tired, but for a moment, she mistook a comment I made about what I was doing with my current crop of experience gained on Dantooine (we were at M.O.), and proceeded to explain to me how the F.S. system really worked and how I should do this and that. All I could do was laugh....finally saying "not you too hun!"
On reflection, I asked her if playing a male so often and for so many hours a day had subconsciously skewed her attitude towards female toons and players and she had to admit it had. Something to think about.

KaiaClodgah wrote:When people assume that because you are playing an online game, you are a male playing a female toon? I know this doesn't so much have to do with dancing but I figured dancer has the largest female population base, I don't think I even see girls post on my server's forum. The reason I post this is I have a BH mentioning me in the BH forums and everyone was like "Don't worry, that Ay'la chick probably isn't really a girl anyways" and it just got to me more than it should.
I had gotten so mad once because there was this a rumor saying I as a guy. So I was running around coronet and theed yelling my number for anyone who had doubts to call me. Only one person called. And he said he didn't even had doubts, just wanted to call. Thanks Var'locke lol.

I like that....

You know, I never even considered that anyone out there would think I was a guy playing a girl. A lot of girls in my age range (I'm 34) grew up on Star Wars and in my case that's what brought me into a MMORPG. I thought Princess Leia rocked and there weren't a lot of girl heroines back then that you could look up to like that. (You cannot count She-ra *shudder*)Leia could verbally trounce ANYONE! She will always be one of my heroes. I've read every book that's come out and even played the old West End Games d6 rpg.
I never played another MMORPG before this one and I don't think I intend to. I think a some of us girls who playthis gamealso have hubbies who play this game or boyfriends that do. In my case it's my love of Star Wars and my hubby that keeps me playing. I would think I'd be bothered thinking that guys think I'm a guy, but honestly, if it stops the "u r hot" /tells or the stalkers ....then RAH! I'm all for it. My husband always tells me to tell someone I'm a dude when they're bugging me but I don't really like to be dishonest. So, I'm a girl, and I'm a gamer. I play games like Doom 3 and Gran Turismo. I like nothing better then to shoot the snot out of stuff and beat things up. Does it matter if I'm a girl? It shouldn't really. Seems like it does to some people... but they're likely the people that would have ended up on /addignore anyway. We're better off without them.

Don't be offeneded, but it's because there really are a lot of guys out there that play girls online. I've know a lot of guys who play girls online. For some, they play girls because girl toons are easier to look at for hours and hours. For others, they make a girl buffer toon because they don't want to watch a guy do exotic.
There are others, less innocent ranging from sexualy confused teens to real peverts. On my server, there's a guy who plays a girl and he's infamous for being wierd. He gets off on flirting with guys and even marrying them. The inet can be a dangerous place, you never know when that person claiming to be an 18 year old girl is really a 40 year old perv living in his mom's basement.
That's why I never flirt online. I don't go around accusing female toons of being rl guys, but I tend to be neutral to them. Besides, I have a real life gf so I don't have a need to find umm... online companionship.
