Is there any difference in the speed of the mounts? Can a novice CH ride any kind of mount?
Yes, the "avian" mounts, like the kaadu and the carrion spat, are fastest when galloping. They also have some of the lowest HPs. Higher HP mounts like dewbacks are horribly slow when galloping. In fact, I didn't notice any change in speed when I told my dewback to gallop. LOL!
No, a novice CH cannot ride any kind of mount. You're still restricted by the CL of the creature. Novice CH can ride anything CL 12 or lower.
So does this mean that all the mounts has the same speed, when they don't gallop?
Vertexon,
First off, Thank You for the excellent guide. I'm just beginning to explore the Wonderful World of Creature Handling (meant sincerely) and it is proving invaluable. I appreciate it greatly.
As I've started off in this adventure, though, I've run into a snag. You mention using /tellpet to issue commands to your pets. The only command I seem to be able to get to work with /tellpet is the 'follow' command and that doesn't always work either, especially after I've issued the 'stay' command to the pet verbally (in /say mode). My pet just sits there fidgetting around until I say the command aloud.
Is it just me or is /tellpet partly broken? Or am I missing something in syntax? (I've just been trying to use '/tellpet attack', etc.)
I'd appreciate any input you could give.
For the "/tellpet" question: I get by this by using the macro I have the command assigned to as the key I hit when I train that skill. Also, I saw something that said a single letter command does not work w/ macros (no confirmation of this). So I usea macro w/ /tellpet attack on my F10 key and when I train the command attack, I press F10 instead of typing "attack".
For the question about taming a BE creature, yes you do need to be able to train/control the level of creature you are trying to tame from a creature deed. (Although I have tamed a level 41 creature when I was supposed to only be able to tame a level 40. I believe that was an aberation, however.)
For taming grind I mentioned earlier to go to dathomir when you get to higher level and tame, tame, tame. I withdraw that advice now. Instead go to a high spawn area on a starting planet (they are often between 500-1000 meters from non-player cities) and run around there and tame. I found a nice place on Talus, another on Correllia, and a third on Naboo. I also have great luck, but more frustration, taming all the lower level aggressive creatures on Yavin-4. Yavin-4 has a real good spawn rate near the outposts with lots of baby spawn. You better have some mask scent clothing when you go because almost all the spawn is aggro, albeit lower level (e.g. CL 25 and lower). When something breaks your scent there you don't have a lot of places to run to to reestablish maskscent. Take a speederbike or swoop, you'll need it.
From the DE's that I have known, and the many droids I have purchased, there are some problems. They do need to be fixed ( one of my droids changes color every time I take it out), but to me a DH sounds FUN.
Think of the DH as a person using a remote control. (how many of you truly know what all the buttons on your VCR remote do?) As I see it, you must study the manual, learn the buttons, and make exacting decisions using your SKILL, getting optimal performance out of your machine. Sure, anyone can push play, or rewind. Get an MSE.

Also, as a side note, I have found that 1. I use a BE kaadu mount to earn combat CH experience (she has 2700 health as opposed to the 1300 you get from the tamed ones). and 2. My creature with the highest HAM is a level 14 forest mite from Rori.
I couldn't care less about grinding, I just put on my Hunter tag and take walkabouts (or rideabouts with the land speeder). I have a full datapad of different creatures (all level 12 and above), and I just replace the lowest one if I find one stronger. Will I get MCH as fast as others? No, but at least I had fun getting there. Also, after previously deciding against it, I believe I will go ahead and get my Master Scout and take up Ranger. My playstyle just begs for it.
When you open your 'Skills' window look to your left under "Skill Mods" and then scroll down to "Max Level Of Pets". This is the CL at which you can call and/or tame, depending one what your skills are which comes to the second heading under skillmods you want to keep an eye on, and that is "Taming Of Viscious Creatures"
As a Wookie, you get a +10 in Max Level of Pets as a species specific bonus.
You forgot to take into account the creature being aggressive. For aggressive creatures there is a 'Taming vicious creature' modifier. I believe the 'Aggressive' number listed in a creature's examine window must be matched to your 'Taming Vicious Creature' modifier before you can tame it. I have not been able to completly verify the correlation between 'aggressive' and 'taming vicious' numbers, but it has seemed to be the case for me so far. Good luck and good hunting.
Palfy:
You may only ever train babies. The way to get "better" creatures is to go out and find the babies of better creatures.
