The only reason I ever used the main page was to hit the dev tracker button or simply skim the newest topics in the development and announcement forums. Basically I just used it as a dev issue search. Now you pretty much removed that with the new layout and cluttered the whole damn page up with columns. How was 1 column less organized? How was having everything listed out vertically cluttered? The drop down tab was always the fastest way to go anywhere and there's no way not to scroll in it so I don't see how people are cheering less scrolling. Thanks to the post up a bit further I changed it to 'verbose' which is slightly siimilar to the old mode but it still feels cramped with the 2 columns where 1 main one used to be.
I don't care about 'quick links' since search was always just on the bottom which was simple enough to remember, my 'quick stats' really don't mean jack to me I think I used the dashboard link twice in the last year and a half, don't care about the new forum names nor my friends list since I don't stalk other posters often, and the big box for announcements is just redundent; there's the announcement forum 2 inches to the left of that and it should tell you what the newest post is in there...you know like it used to. And in a brighter, larger font then drab grey small enough to be glanced over and miss.
Frankly I just plum don't like the new layout. It organized things I don't care about in a way I don't care for in order to provide less room for what I considered important. I rarely use the front page, like I said, so I'll just get used to it and actually have to surf the in development board instead of just skim the front page to learn what I want I guess.

I would like to be able to customize the columns, like having everything in alphabetical order instead of most popular - I would like for there to be a way to turn off certain things, like the 'users online' section. I don't really care who all is online. Same with 'top boards' section. I don't care which boards are the top boards.
Other than that, I think I will get used to it. I'd just like to be able to have things in alphabetical order like previously.

I like how I don't have to scroll down as much to hit the board I want, but I really think anything I bookmark should be near the top like on the old boards instead of scrolling all the way down the page. After a cursory look through Prefs I didn't see anything to change that.

If you are dead set against and hate new layout,
here are a few steps to take to help you at least be more at ease with the new system.
here are a few steps to take to help you at least be more at ease with the new system.
Under my profile, preferences, scroll down to the - Portal Style Home Page Settings-
Select~ Verbose
Check~ Show latest messages
Now back on the home page:
At each forum you want to see most
use the 'float' button
this will move things you have interest in to the top of the page.
It may not be 'like home' but it may help you settle into this new style easier.

i like the new layout, however, the bookmarks and subscription portlets should be among the top portlets displayed or give users the options to change the display order. I looked under the settings in my profile and did not see an option for this.

Horrible, cluttered, the concept is nice to keep things organised but the implementation is not good.
Kind of a pattern they have with everything they do!

At first glance this morning the new layout was an eye sore... now that Ive actually played around with it a bit, I can navigate the forums much quicker.
I feel bad that I voted "I hate it"

Took me a total of 30 seconds to get used to it and find everything.
I like it!

Ok, my thoughts on this. Ew. I could work with it, easily enough (build my bookmarks folder for the forums I read and ignore the front page all together). But the main reason I used the old front page, aside from occasionally navigation, is that I could take in the threads from each of the main groups at once. Just scroll down the page, and there was a chance a thread subject would catch my eye in a forum I wouldn't normally frequent. Yes, I've gone to profiles and tried both the verbose and compact settings, neither of them shows me the information which was the reason I used the top level forums page.

Like I said I like it.
I just wish I can edit what I want for boards on the front page, under professions, and trade boards, etc.

Works well for me... will take getting used to, but not too bad. Actually starting to like it more I use it... Admin tracker is a welcome change as well.
