Thread: E-Web...An Interesting Idea to discuss...

Passive group bonuses are bad for things like accuracy and speed especially. Then you don't really need the SL for anything more than to stand there AFK. And I can almost guarantee the devs will say no to a concept that could put a very powerful heavy weapon in the hands of 19 commandos grouped with 1 SL to give them uber bonuses. The maximum effect of something like that is unbelievable. +30 defense is pretty good now that defenses work. When you make the ability an active ability it can be very powerful though because the SL has to actually spend HAM to use it and can presumably affect only one person at a time. That's why I've been proposing the actual weapon have a second "crew" slot to it where the SL can sort of plug himself in and then he and that Commando go crazy. There are examples in game (such as base shutdown) where you need one profession to do something and then a second profession does the next step. This would be a two step weapon that could be used by both in the first step but requires the second step to unlock the awesome power. (and the commando in the first slot to be really awesome.)

The deal with dabblers is that one person gets all the bonuses and can use them all to great effect by himself. If the weapon itself doesn't allow dabbling then it doesn't matter if you have the SL line and the Commando line. You can only affect one part of the weapon at a time. There would be no sense dabbling unless you intend to fill both roles from time to time.

And the SL revamp is coming in a month. I will not ask the Devs to work on a weapon for the SL revamp that SL cannot themselves use. That's the nitty gritty of this whole thing. Commandos aren't the only militarily trained profession in the game. The other is SL. Right now SL is support only.

DiLune and others...

One comment about the commandos who are saying "make the E-Web commando only."

You need to understand where they are coming from. Commandos have been asking for stationary mini-turrets, like the E-web for over 6 months now. It has ALWAYS been discussed as a new commando-only weapon, to help give commandos more of a purpose.

Currently commandos suck in pvp and have problems in pve (16m limit to all specials and no defenses), so their ONLY real purpose is using broken weapons (that suck) to destroy AT-STs and turrets. The opportunity to use thse AT-ST/turret killing skills present themselves, MAYBE 2-3 times in a given month...only on large raids and encounters. In fact, on my server, almost every guild has destroyed their bases because they are sick of the bugs, and I have seen 2 AT-STs in the last month because they are now PvP only. I, personally, haven't had an opportunity to use a rocket launcher inover 4months...

To counteract this suckiness that commandos have had to deal with, as we are one-trick ponies with nothing but a flame-thrower in a universe of heat-resistant mobs, many commandos have suggested us becoming "battlefield specialists" and getting an E-Web (a stationary gun that can be destroyed)to give us a role as battlefield masters against players as well as those mythical turrets and AT-STs that we never see anymore. That was the REAL "original" E-Web proposal. The rationale was that the E-Web couldn't move so it wasn't useful in pvp, but that it would give commandos a use in large group encounters. Most commandos liked the idea...but devs won't talk to us so it hasn't gone anywhere.

Now, recently this now Squad Leader idea for a joint-use E-Web came out. I, personally, am indifferent about the idea.Isee the points of both sides. However, before you come into our house and flame us saying "what are you, crazy?....we will never support a commando only gun," please realize that you are dealing with 3 groups of commandos here:

(1) Those that thought of the E-Web LONG before you did and feel like you are stealing their gun away from them

(2) Those that like the Commando/SL E-Web idea and support it

(3) And those, like me, that are indifferent and just want the game to be better (however that may come about)

No one is telling you that you should support a commando-only gun. They are assuming (maybe wrongly) that you are aware of the history of the E-Web on these boards, and saying they want the E-Web to be implemented their way (commando-only), just like it has been proposed for months, instead of your way.

I know quite a bit of the history of the discussions. The E-Web has been on the SL wishlist for quite some time as well.

The point I may not make directly enough sometimes is that some people come and say "No, Commando only" and I just cringe when I see that. I cringe because it won't get implemented for quite some time if we go that direction. This is teamwork and I have little tolerance for wall-building and resource hoarding. The forums are full of nations of posters that compete for development resources and jealously guard them to the point of hurting themselves. This proposal may not ever fly. The Devs haven't commented on the possibility of it even working. But this would be a new way of doing combat that, in my opinion, would be very good for the game and also good for commandos and SL.

Sorry, bubba, ain't gonna happen.

Listen, i am a very tolerant person and when i heard of the original idea i was absolutely for it. I thought the idea was great.

But reading yourn post, all i gotta say is:

We will either do it the SL way or not at all. Let us see how much luck the Commandos have if we recall our support for this idea.....

Seems a little harsh Payne. And on the other side of the coin, you are using a heavy weapon; that is our domain. To tell you the truth, I dont think this is going to happen without the support from both of us. Just because a profession is up for a revamp doesnt mean they are going to take a core ability away from the commandos by giving another profession the heaviest weapon in the game. I might have sounded a little harsh, but when you are trying to implement something like this in a game and propose it you have to deal with people that have different views than you. Just post back with what you like and what you didnt like so that a middle ground can be found. This is what I have been doing with Panzer as of late.

It is a little harsh.

And for a reason:

Squad leaders do not need an E-Web. It just would be a nice addition. It would be useful, it would be "cool" and it would be "starwarsy". But it would in no way be nescessary.

SLs can do without the E-Web. It is not even one of our main concerns. Many would like to see it in game, but it will not make or break the SL profession.

If the commando community insists on having it on their own, not sharing it with the SLs, we can simply revoke our backing of the E-Web. When we do not want to have it anymore (since we cannot find a common ground with the extreme selfish attitude of the majority of commandos posting here lately), it will not get introduced in the SL revamp. Thus it will not have an effect on Commando as part of the SL revamp. You will have to wait for a Commando revamp to see that happen.

Now, just so that we are on the same wave length here:

SLs do not need the E-Web. We are willing to share it with the Commando community to add a new weapon to the Commandos and give them some much needed attention. We are here to help you guys.

And all that we get in response is "MINE! I WONT SHARE! GO AWAY! ALL MINE!!!!!"

Now, how do you think we will take up on this? What impression do you think it leaves?

Why should we lend support to the commando community in a more than selfless act, when your common response is "NO! IT IS OURS! OURS ALONE!!!!"?

What would you do in our situation?

How would you feel in our shoes?

Um...once again you make a statement saying that my proposal isnt "sharing" with SL...yet it is.....and in your 2nd remark, you say it bluntly...

...reread what i wrote, SL's skills are to enhance their group members...certain skills for turrets enhance the turret gunner...if that isnt "sharing" then even with the revamp SL has no purpose..if thats the case you make...

SL "shares" with all the combat proffessions..in what? leadership.....that same thing should be applied to all fronts...a portable turret and groups alike...they dont "share" in the weaponry, they share in how effective a group can be...or in our case here, how effective an E-Webb can be....your case only stands (that commando is trying to make the e-webb only for them and not for SL..which is not at all what I said [just they shouldnt have cert...WHICH makes sense...but they have the LEADERSHIP to efficiently use the weapon]...your case only stands if I gave out real figures and numbers and being totally one sided...I simply gave an Idea that could be approved on..and even more leadership skills given to SL to better improve an e-webb weapon emplacement...

That at all is not being selfish in either way...the Commando provides the guns, the SL provides the leadership..its a simple and effective combo..rather than having two different styles of e-webb..(1 being stronger, 1 being weaker pertaining to the skill sets of either prof)...and in personal opinion would be the most effective measure to go...

First off, sorry, if i come by so harsh, i am just a bit disappointed (for obvious reasons). It is not you personally, i am ranting at, it is more in a general direction. Sorry if you took it up as a personal attack.

Ster wrote:

I would like to ask a couple of questions now actually to help understand the SLs view better:

1. What kind of skills and how much would you like to give the SL for this weapon?

Well, the most common ground among SLs is, that Commandos should be the damage dealers with the E-Web. Personally, i would jst like to give SL accuracy and sped, nothing else. Other want the ability to use suppression fire and an AE warning shot with it. I can live with that as well.

2. Would you like to see an entire tree based around this proffesion for the SL?

I would like to see it implemented in the "mobility" tree, to spice up the terrain negotiation and not make that column look so barren and empty.

3. What kind of skills would you like to give the Commandos for this weapon?

Commandos should have the specials with it. I never made my mind up about what kind of specials, just that they should have the exclusive access to the high damage specials. In short: High Dmage AE attacks (i would say mostly random pool attacks). Maybe even including AE Knockdown (but that is a thin line here, not to screw up carbineers)

4. Would both take it out solo or only grouped?

Both should be able to use it solo. There is no need to waste skillpoints by not making it useable solo. The difference would be:

The commando having about 30 accuracy and speed with it would be able to use their special, but they would be terribly slow with it, so that a Flamethrower might be the better solution.

The SL on th eother hand would have about 80 accuracy and speed with it, but no specials, basically stuck to autoattack (and maybe suppression fire), so they would most likely be better off with another weapon, like a carbine, or rifle.

Once together, the Commando should be the gunner and the SL the energy handler, to maximize the damage, able to create massive amounts of damage as a Team. The SL would have to give up his attacks to operate the energy handler, though.

Also, I wouldnt mind if you commented on some of the proposal that I gave earlier in a rather long post. It was a very hard attempt at a middle ground to benefit both professions. And btw, this post was very constructive and helpful in understanding the SLs point of view, thank you.

I will try

OK, I read this thread and here are my thoughts and I will explain why for each one as best as I can (feeling under the weather today):

What Mater Commandoes (and no less) Should Get:

1) Certification for the E-web (self explanatory).

2) +25 Accuracy/ +25 Speed (basic gunnery skills).

3) 2 specials, one an area of attack posture change to prone no matter the stance (a suppressive fire that does 2-3x damage) and the other a single target overpower type shot for attacking hard targets, like turrets (a concentrated fire that does 4-5x damage).

4) The ability to assemble an E-web in 20s. I will explain this below.

What Master Squad Leaders (and no less) Should Get:

1) Certification for the E-web (because its more fun to share your toys).

2) +5 Accuracy/+5 Speed (less bonuses owing to more broad training).

3) +100 Group Accuracy/+100 Group Speed that cannot affect oneself.

4) The ability to set up an E-web in 1 minute.

5) A mod to cut E-web setup time in half.

Right now the biggest obstacles to implementing a weapon like this are making the role of the squad leader useful, not "taking" heavy weapons away from commandoes, and keeping this weapon out of the hands of dabblers. I think that implementing a setup time for the weapon, and heavily weighing it in favor of commandoes owing to their physical fitness (unarmed 4), will encourage cooperation between the two classes. This waycommandoes basically couldn't hit the broadside of a barn without a squad leader around to give direction and a squad leader would spend a long time setting the darned thing up while directing his troops. Howevereither class could use it individually with significant penalties. Also, if 2 master squad leaders wanted to team up use the E-web, they could, but they still would not be able to use it a full efficiency (slower set up than a master commando and no specials). The last concern is dabblers, but I think putting all the specials, certs, and mods at master would discourage people from min/maxing to optimize use of the weapon. An exception to this that I could live with would be to spread the group bonuses and setup time over all 4 trees of squad leader and in master (similar to CH mods), but I think thats more for their people to discuss.

Not seen this one rear its head since the old dev boards

The thing the Commando's here have to understand is that if you want this to be the all powerful weapon you want it to be is that it must have weaknesses as well as strengths. Frankly every single one of you would be dissapointed if it wasn't as good as advertised. If it sticks to canon an eweb is an extremely powerful weapon that has a great range of fire and is very quick. If thats the case then what chance does anyone have of beating a commando on his own with one? This is why it needs, at least, to be a two man weapon to run at all times imo.

Let me give you an example. You would expect it to be the equivilant in power to an ATST at least? Remember when people took ATST's out to solo Kryats? That can't be allowed to happen again its very unbalencing. However two or three players using that weapon with other counteracting balences would not be unbalencing because it is then a team effort.

So this is the balences I would put it.

1) Make the Eweb a two man base team: SL and Commando. Both have a part of the Eweb in thier datapads (i.e. one cannot use it without the other).

2) 20 second construction/deconstruction delay.

3) If either team member is incapacitated the gun cannot fire.

4) The eweb is in a fixed loaction and cannot movewithout be deconstructed.

I would say that this is a good start as far as reaching a middle ground is concerned.I think that this gun should be relatively usable in certain situations such that you might want to use it under certain circumstances. I have not given those circumstances much thought as of now though.

The E-Web should be a valid choice for a Commando to use if they aren't soloing. If they're in a group with a melee tank or two, it should be worthwhile to deploy and use one.

Has anyone considered the idea of always counting as "prone" when using the E-Web for the purpose of firing accuracy and being hit in Melee? That's enough to make it unusable solo.

another issue to consider in this debate is sellability to the devs.

if they see this as an attempt by commandos to obtain an uber weapon, they will shoot us down out of hand. if..on the other hand ...they can see it as a way to increase player interdependency ..they are waaay more likely to go for it. i for one dont mind sharing this fantastic item with another much maligned class. kudos to garvin for the great idea.

as for the possibilties for pvp...go to lucas arts battlefront page and check out their screenshots. in them you will find a static mounted cannon. it is a commandos dream come true. a weapon like this could lock down certain strategic areas. its strength being massive damage and speed..it weakness, the interdependance feature and immobilty.

good luck fellow commandos

OK im sorry SL is a back up class one to add to other players and make them better. Why would they even be considered to be given a heavy wepon or a wepon like that. If they Do I as a commando want 100 KD defense melee mitigation 1-3 dizzy defense at least 80 I want a Genosian cannon. And for Ft's old dot back. Then I would not feel so bad that they are getting a wepon that you know commando should get. Does SL get any new wepons at all? In there skill tree do they recive any wepon certifactions? If so wich ones. YOu are not meant to make things go boom you are meant to say here every one hit them in this spot we can do alot more damage.
