Thread: heres a problem i see with commando.
On thing that I think gets overlooked is that a Commando would not normally operate alone. I agree that there should be some terrain negotiation skill, but team work appears to be an important design principal and inclusion of a Squad Leader (group terrain negotiation bonus), Ranger (scounting), and Combat Medic makes a more powerful team.
Even the PvP principals are built around a team theme.

I still totally disagree with getting rid of Unarmed Prequisite, it makes us unique, it makes us a harder class to get to, and it makes us commandos. However Unarmed techniques should be implemented in the Commando tree, as well as a Commando "knuckler" weapon too.
noone has yet called for a removal of the unarmed tree....all of my posts have stated that it should indeed be a prereq to commando and then explains why. the fact is that terrain negotiation should not be a prereq but a granted skill possibly in field tactics. right now the commando is missing a few key skills that any commando would have been trained in. field medicine: which would be the application of tourniquets, bandages and minor wound healing (hell even in basic training you are taught this stuff). terrain negotiation skills (which could be justified even further by the commando being taught how to read a map in basic training), unarmed combat to include simple disarming and judo flips,etc...possibly some bayonet training would have been done here. his primary weapon is a flamethrower which requires ultra close range. a commando who would be trained in many heavy weapons should also have some sorta heavy ranged weapon....like a clumsy chaingun or something to that effect(carbine maybe).
if this is an elite character class then it should start acting like one. i just made commando and got flame special 1 last night....i was unimpressed. it was clumsy and slow and never hit. the launcher pistol on the other hand was quite nice since i am a master gunfighter. grenades were also something on my hit list right now...they never hit!
this poor commando is really no stronger than the master marksman....he needs to be fixed. he needs skills that bring him up to "commando" standards. some may argue but this is star wars and its not the real "army" commando type of commando....but where would the commando idea have come from but the real world example of one. i think the biggest problem with this proffession at this point is that it was designed by some computer jockey with no knowledge of what a real commando and his training was like. bring in a consultant for an hour...let him explain to you what the training is all about and what is learned in basic combat training....what is learned in combat life saver courses...and finally what is learned in advanced combat schools. i think it will help alot.
hell i attended basic training and combat life saver school....ask me for advice...i won't charge a dime! ![]()
That's nice, but I have a better idea. If you want Terrain Negotiation, there's this line of scout called Exploration. It's pretty useful, I'd suggest getting it.
No matter how you define the word commando, they are weapons specialists in SWG. If they were intended to have terrain negotiation, their prereqs would include exploration. They don't. Now what I'd rather see is unarmed contributions in one of the commando trees, because that IS a prereq. If you want terrain negotiation, it's not rocket science. Take exploration like everybody else.

Why are Combat Medics now getting terrain negotiation added into their line? Using your logic they should just take exploration like everyone else....

well i'm glad someone in this piece can actually read english...yes the combat medic gets +10....so the question is why do they deserve +10 terrain negotiation and commandos have to spend wasted points on scout skills that should be granted in their training. noone is calling for them to be a master of everything....not once has it been mentioned that they be able to slice their own weapons or build a pa hall. but the fact remains that there are plenty of missing skills here that should have been incorporated into a commando's ELITE training.
its a cool idea, i would like to see terrain negotiation in the tree, i'm a master weaponsmith and part commando.... i have no skill points left.
but i think it goes against teh devs main ideas.... interdependance.
a commando should work in a group, with a squad leader, with a ranger, with a medic
that way you need to socialize, people need to diversify. if you could do everything you needed, and be completely self sufficient asa commando, who would want to do anything else then?
