Thread: Dessert Chefs VS Rich Chefs VS Your Average Joe Chef
Oh yes, that's why I'm fiercly arguing in favor of making the chef a marketable profession. Food and drinks should be seen to be at least as good as spices and weapon powerups. A master artisan can produce an item that increases your weapon's damage by 33%. That's a lot! And that's just a starting profession.
An intermediate chef can produce, what? An item that increases your focus and willpower by 5% for 8 minutes?
Chefs can't make money because roleplayers don't tend to have any and right now, the Chef profession is almost entirely useless except for roleplaying.
In my post of chef priorities, I tried to highlight the top 5 issues not to make us better roleplayers, not to make Jawa Beer more frothy or implement drinking animations, but 5 issues that, if implemented, would make Chefs as useful as weaponsmiths and doctors.
And with usefulness comes profit.

Funny how I describe the "Rich chef" in every way, EXCEPT I have no money. I'm a member of a large PA, I play long hours daily, and I double up as a pistoleer.
Lol J, I was thinking exactly of you when I created my "Rich Chef" definition.
Anyway, you may not have a lot of money in your coffers, but you're still a "Rich Chef", OR you could be if you tried. For example, you have several factories and houses. Poor Chefs have none. You have a PA who is at least a semi-reliable market for you. Poor Chefs don't have this market. You have all day to craft and sell your goods. Poor Chefs don't have all day. If you wanted to be rich, you could just run Combat Missions for an hour and rack up 20k. Poor Chefs don't have the combat skills required of this.
You're a "Rich Chef" ![]()

So saying a "rich chef" is one that owns a factory is a laugh. Anyone with a metal sampling tool and some time to spend AFK can afford a factory.
Nah, think about it: one of my requirements for being a "Rich Chef" is that you're a powergamer. While not neccessarily true, most people who have a lot of time are powergamers. If you have the TIME to spend afk sampling, then you're still a rich Chef, whether you own a factory or not.
For example, every day I HAVE to buy my resources from the bazaar. I don't have the time to sample everything. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to sample maybe Cereal or Fruit or something, but all other ingredients I have to buy.
You know, the milk and eggs issue kind of points to a bigger issue within the crafting system. Every since the farmer profession was removed, resource collecting became just that, collecting. We originally were going to have the opportunity to cultivate and grow ingredients for our uses, including animals that could produce milk and eggs. Now, unfortunately, we are stuck with collecting whatever is available. Even a Flora Farm isn't a farm, it's just another way to scavenge...
I'd like to see the BioEngineers be able to breed animals form animals, and there to be some way to get seeds, or even reduce some of our harvested flora to a seed level, so we can cultivate our resources efficiently.
I dont have a market with my PA at all. Our PA is a community. I give them food free. In exchange I get simpler stuff like weapons and clothes free. If I want to get houses or armor, the chances are high I'll have to supply most of the resources as they're not easy to get. But I havezero market in my PA.
If you think a PA is such a great market, join one. My PA is a group of similar minded people who like to hang out together and will try and give a hand to one another if possible.
I own two factories and a small house(not several factories and SEVERAL HOUSES). I also have 2 solar power generators, and a bunch of harvesters, which I run missions for 1-2H a day to keep going. I could just get another 5 harvesters on metal, and sell the produce to support all my harvesters, but I dont agree with the attitude of a lot of people trying to make huge amounts of money out of certain professions.
I see your point J2xC, but i end up destroying most of the food i make.
I really enjoy talking to the other chefs on starsider. It's a great group of people.
J2xC i have a suggestion that helped me out significantly. I saved up 50k over like 4 days, and purchased a heavy fusion power generator. These things rock! they can power my harvesters, and leave me plenty to sell on the bazaar, or trade for organics. It also frees up a lot.
I have had a factory for some time. The factory cost me 0 - yes a big, fat 0 credits.
I am part of MOF, a small, co-ordinated PA.
Our Architect gets XP from making the buildings we need, and we ALL gather the resources he needs to make them - even to the point that we have many a time spent 2-3 hours with every artisan sampling on an ore vein to get the resources needed.
The factory takes a couple of missions a day to pay for, and only uses power when it is running.
In addition, it is ESSENTIAL for some items as you progress that require factory crate items.
I see a factory as an essential tool, not a luxury.
I hardly ever sell food - in fact, this week has been my best yet, I think I've sold 3000cr of food in 7 days....
I pay for all my harvesters by doing a LOT of missions.
To those without a factory, the issues may seem trivial. Once you get one, watching stewed gwouch cost 3000 organics & 2000 water for 100 items, when hand making the same items would give 100 stacks of 4-5, you see it in perspective.
Yes, I can manually make the items faster, and I often do, but, due to the fact Im often out earning cash on missions, or hand sampling for resources because med/large flora farms cant be made, the factory is damned handy
I do agree our buff lengths need to be longer, and the lists re-sorted to put the weaker buffs starting at dom1 and increasing exponentially to master.
That said, just because some chef's choose not to buy & use a factory, does not make it any less of an issue.
Every chef that wants to make enough food tokeep more than 1 person a day buffed needs a factory. To me, that's as good as saying "this will help all chefs". Even lazychumps argument that you can make things by hand faster is missing the point.
With a factory, you can make one "Amazing" experiment result schematic and then produce 100 items with that design rather than experimenting 100 times for 100 different results, some of which will be critical failures. Also, your factory can make things while you're offline. Also, the factory can make things at the same time you make things, thus increasing your output.
In other words, lazychump has no idea what a factory is, has probably never seen one, and should really stick to the Image Designer forum where he might be able to keep up with the discussion. I don't argue about astrophysics, lazychump should not argue about factories, for the same reasons.
i dont want Factories to work for chef.
I think thats a pointless way to be a cook
its fine for making a component but not actualy food.
Personaly I think the chef should have to hand cook things to make them into large stacks , and if they want to take a factory way out of it then you only get 1 sorry.
I mean , a chef in my opinion should be actively cooking in a group not carring creats of foods.
when they need to buff they should have to turn on there R5 cooking station droid and cook up so great buffs.
Factory produced foods not a Chef thats a Merchant or a business man ..
Anyone who wanted to be a Chef should have too Cook plain and simple no cop outs
There's no way to hand cook things into a stack.
The problem with hand cooking is that even if you use the same ingredients, you don't get the exact same results twice. +75 STR this time, +80 STR next time, +70 STR after that, etc. How can you stack those three things?
The way to produce a lot of identical items is with a factory.
And it makes sense. Nabisco does not hand make every Trisket. They mass produce them in a factory. It's still the recipie that a chef somewhere made by hand at some point, only mass produced.
