I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but I have run across a few beggars spamming for help in a coupl eof starports. Not alot, mind you, but... these guys have an Elite profesion tag. For example, one guy was asking for credits so he could advance up his skill tree, but he had a master architect tag on. When I came back a few minutes later its was gone, and he took off his composite armor, but it kinda got me mad. Clearly, this guy didn't need the help, it was sport for him.

As a result, I am afriad that I am less likely to assist a noob with a few creds, so never know when you are going to end up on some list of "suckers who gave me money."

Has anyone else come across this, or am I just re-hashing an old topic?

I make it a rule never to tip those who ask for money. I might do a drive by tip of smebody who is obvisously new. But anybody wh spends time begging instead of doing missions get nothing from me.

I once had a character on Bloodfin that was fairly well off, not incredibly wealthy but had about 1.5 million in the bank. I also had the "Helper" tag on. Out of the blue I got this tell from a player asking me to loan them 250kso they could buy some armor. I told them I did not know them and that was far too much money to part with. I suggsted they do some missions and start building up some capital. I was accused of being "mean". I then old the player that "Helper" does not mean "bank". After a bit more abuse from the player I /addignore'd him and went on with my day.I also removed my "Helper" tag.

Conversely, I was on my wookiee character on Bria and was stading in a music Buff group when another wookiee asked me where I had gotten my armor. We had a nice discussion about where i ahd gotten it and the price and such. The armor was pretty expensive for an entire suit. He asked me nicely ifI might have some old armor that I would part withor sell, but I did not have any with me at the time. He thanked me and continued getting buffed. Afterward, I tipped him enough money to get a set or armor. Why? Because he did not once ask for money. He only asked if he could buy some old armor from me to supplement his. n this case i was happy to help a fellow player.

Why some people would rather have things handed to them instead of working for it (playing the game) is beyond me. It is bad enough when they spam in spatila but when they send me a tell really get irate.

But what else can you do but ignore them?

Regards!

Okay, first off, that story about the guy who said he made 50 million credits purely through begging cracks me up. Honest or not, that's just sheer tenacity

I don't usually tip someone who asks for it. I like the story about the Wookiee on Bria--someone who is respectful and friendly, acting like a real person and asking for a reasonable amount of help, that is cool. "Can u give me 200k to buy some armor", not so cool.

I picked up my UO account last night and started playing it a bit again, just as a little diversion while waiting for the CU. One thing that I have noticed there is that people are EXTRAORDINARILY nice to noobs. I am a complete noob in UO, I played for a month or so last year, and quit. When I started last night, I barely remembered how to move around or attack something.

Anyway, I'm standing there in the main noob city and I went AFK for a while, I came back and my trade window was open. A blacksmith player was passing by and decided to make me some armor and weapons, because she could tell I could use some. She gave me a full suit of armor, and when it was too heavy to wear, she took it back and made me another suit that I could wear. Then I saw another friend from the last time I played, and he right away offered to get me a new mount. He went and got me a swamp dragon thing and the blacksmith made me some armor for it.

This was the same thing I encountered the last time I played it--people just being incredibly friendly and willing to help a new player out and take you on quests, help you run missions and learn about the system, and so on.

I don't know if anyone does that in SWG, but it did strike me as unusual, almost the opposite of the "begging" problem that we have here.

Where are people getting the idea that newbies start with 75k? Have any of you tried creating a new character on a different server? I have, you start with 1k of credits and a speeder deed. If you do all the newbie profession quests then you can get about 8k or 9k. I have no idea where anyone is getting 75k, but you are wrong.

Beingof the Brotherhood of Ni, surely you know that you can have them fetch a shrubbery for you or cut down a tree with a herring.

I tried that but then they started saying "it" to me and I could not stand it!

Wait! Now I said it!

Argh! I said it again!

This is probably going to sound odd....but I think it is a karma thing. Yes, tipping someone does not help you in game. The argument could be said that doing so in life does not help you either.

But I approach this in game the same way I approach it outside the game. I dont give the money for the person that wants it....I could honestly care less about what they do with it or how much they need it. I do it for me. For my karma.

Yea, its silly. But it makes me feel good, and that is all that counts.

That is not to say I have not refused before. When someone is obviously clowning me, I pull back the wallet.

I don't tip beggars anymore. Well maybe the occasional 1 cr. I still tip medics and ATK entertainers though.

My response to beggars:

Target the beggar (so %NT properly echoes the name)

/emote looks at %NT; Hey %NT - Here's 20 credits, buy yourself a map of Coronet and highlight the location of the mission terminals.; /tip 20

Followed by an /addignore

My tactics for true newbies:

Iusually carry the following in mybackpack:

-- crates of highly experimented (99%) CDEF weapons, both ranged and melee.

-- crates of weapon powerups (ranged & melee)

-- crate of backpack and crate of stim Bs

WhenI meet someone new I figure out what kind of weapon(s) they use and build them a custom "starter kit", putting it in a backpack (which they usually do not have yet) and give it to them to give them a leg up.

A really good CDEF weapon is much faster and does 50%-75% more damage than the standard one they start with - it reallly helps out at those novice skill levels.

I follow up the gift with a quick note about our city (I'm the Mayor) and waypoints to shops in the area. No hard sell tactics on the city, but I've successfully recruited several new citizens this way.

True, but most noobs don't know that's possible. What they really need is someone to spend a few minutes with them explaining exactly that.
