Not to mention the helper droid. As annoying as it is, running it's missions can get you a fair amount of credits for a new character. I don't mind helping new characters learn how the game works, but I'm not about to give them credits because they don't bother running missions.

The other day I had a very strange experience related to begging. I was crafting inside my house and I get a tell to the effect of:
-Beggar: "Hi. I need some credits. Can you help me?"
-Me: "Ok. I presume you are a newbie. How much do you need?"
-Beggar: "Yes, I'm new. I need 210k"
*Silence for a few minutes while I decide whether to tear him a new one or investigate this further.*
-Me: "That's a lot of money. Why do you need so much?"
-Beggar: "I need to buy a flamethrower."
-Me: "A flamehtrower doesn't cost that much."
-Beggar: "I need a crate."
At this point I don't know why I kept talking to him. I finally crafted and sold him one flamethrower cheap. When I delivered it he was barking in Coronet, in composite, about selling loot parts. Gave him the flamer, he payed me for it about 10 minutes later and I quickly followed it with /addignore
The strange thing is that next time someone begs me for something I'll probably try to help them again. /shrug

Newbies are starting with 75k credits now. 75k and a Landspeeder X31 deed! When I started SWG in June 2004, I got 500 credits from the system. I searched for some other newbies and we went out on Tatooine, killing Rockmites and Sevorrts for some credits. You have to learn the game, the economy and how to make money. Its not that hard - you just have to learn it. There is NO NEED to give beggars anything for free! If I see them, I give them jobs like hunting some creature ressources and pay them normal for the delivery.

Not to mention that, with the lime-on-crack-colored helper droid, most true newbies can pick up a decent handful of extra credits simply by figuring out how to use their various skills. Beggars exist in-game because, as in real life, some people are more soft-hearted and ready to part with their money than others. All it takes is one donation of a few 10k to show someone that begging is an easy way to earn money without even having to be at the keyboard.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping out other players when they need it. Heck, that's how my guild's managed to recruit most of its current membership. But I figure people get more out of the game if I simply serve as a tank & healing battery during their first few missions.
just my rant for the day.

I read an article in a PC gaming mag (I forget which one) where one guy mentioned he did it for fun... I can't see this as much fun, but then again I am hooked on the archi profession =P
It would be nice if one of those lamers would post on here and tell us what the scoop is. Maybe there is some beggar's guild out there.

I deal with the beggars in two different ways. Like an earlier poster in the thread mentioned, if they're in my vicinity, I'll examine them and take a look at their character sheet. If they've plenty of badges, well, they very likely don't need the money. Same as if they're decked out in composite armour and a weapon. I'll simply pass on by.
Now if they send me a tell or persist in begging in person to me, I always respond with a "Whoa, that's totally weird! I was just about to ask you for some credits!" Works everytime.
Granted, if they've no badges, and no armour or weapons, and do impress me as being a new player, I'll help them out if they ask creatively/politely.

I have no sympathy for beggars. I remember when I first started the game back in 03. Back in those days....
seriously though, I started in Rori and I didnt see another player for about my first week. I didnt know my a** from a hole in the ground. I figured out I had to do missions and I did a few and finally left that rock and went to Naboo. There I joined a guild, DSF. and now here I am. Im not uber leet but im doing okay and I never begged.
DONT GIVE TO BEGGARS!

Having my Master Weaponsmith title up I get telled sometimes for money.. I have a macro that I put together for a response if they're in person and one if they're not.
In person:
:looks around and gets his pocket mirror out;/fiddle;/pause 5;/shrug;Sorry I'm sure it doesn't say galaxie savings and loan on my title;/addignore
Not in person
/r You've reached Ikosrou Master Weaponsmith, I am not nor do I claim to be a savings and loan officer of the Imperial Government. If you feel you have reached this message in error please try again - however be advised you are now being put on the /ignore list.
I then /addignore the begger.

"Been doing this since I started the game - I have 50 million in the bank and haven't run amission ONCE"
=============================================================
If they had been doing Baz Nitch missions since the start of the game, or making weapons since the start of the game, or dancing for tips since the start of the game would all of you be upset?
There is a game mechanic that can be used to earn credits...asking others. What is the problem? If that is how they want to earn their credits, it is as viable as any other. Wether it is using the bounty system, solo grouping, doing tedious missions, or begging, they are all viable ways to make credits.

Beingof the Brotherhood of Ni, surely you know that you can have them fetch a shrubbery for you or cut down a tree with a herring.

Back when I started I used to give to beggars asking for a few credits to pay for shuttleport tickets. I have no idea now how many of those were legitimate. I'd like to think that some of them were.

oh, I am NOT condemning these players, or their stye of play at all.. If they can do it, good on them!
I don't blame them for asking - I blame ME, or others LIKE me who have in the past subsidized these players. I have decided to no longer subsidize their style of play is my main point.
