Thread: Stopping Credit Sellers
I think the danger of buying credits puts people off from it. The seller could easily never give you the credits and take your cash, and there's nothing eBay or whoever to do anything about it. Because no physical property traded hands, there's nothing to track, and you'd be duped out of your cash.
It probably stops most of the credit buyers.

Frankly, I see why people are mad that it happens but its a currency exchange. It's like if you were going up to canada and need some canada currency. You pay so much USD, you get back so much Canadian currency. The same works for a game too I would think. And if there was a legal battle, I would go with the standpoint quoted above.
You are not buying credits, you are buying the other persons "time" that it took him to make the credits, level a character, find the good loots.. ect
okay now that we are done with Speculation or perhaps we aren't. Credit selling has been around since the Beginning of these online games and SOE (or the previous forms of the company - Verant) have dealt with it since Everquest was a baby AND......... learned from their mistakes. A large portion of SOE's customers are either credit buyers or credit sell though most will not admit it and mass bannings will only hurt SOE as these players will no longer play the game if they can't buy the credits instead of earning them and of course there is the other side where by taking control and assuring the safty of these trades SOE can make a $ off it... If any of you play EQ2 or check it out SOE has two servers there that are under station exchange. Players can auction their items, even characters for a fee starting at $1 and item and a percent of the sale just like on ebay... Credit sales is just becoming more known now because more companies are cropping up because IGE is not buying out it competition and more for millions of dollars and stupid people who like to brag about things they probably have not even accomplished as sellers... At one point it was all banned from Ebay too... It is never going to go away there is always going to be a large portion of the population who don't want to put in the work, The cheat code kids, the person that works long hours has a family and only gets time to play on occassion, and of you long time role players remember with the paper anddice game there were always those guys that wanted to start with high level characters and a bunch of kewl items...
at this point why waste your time worrying about it? Just enjoy the game for what it is and make the best of it knowing you worked for what you have.

Quick note, sciguyCO pointed this out to me on another thread (as I'm looking for an offical response still)
The official statement as laid out in the EULA, section 7:
You may not buy, sell or auction (or host or facilitate the ability to allow others to buy, sell or auction) any Account or any Game characters, items, credits or copyrighted material or any other intellectual property owned or controlled by us or our licensors.
For example, lets say a clear-as-day credit sale conversation takes place in game.
You say, "so I am going to give you 10 million credits, and you are going to give me $10 via paypal for it?"
xSellerx says, "yes, that is the deal, let's hope no one finds out!"
would I just /report them? Its not harrassment, and worse, would I get in trouble even though I'm just trying to stop a seller?
its just the type of thing SOE should be clear on, as clear as they are about other bannable offenses.

Heh - Good try, but you are speaking of tangible, visible goods - IRL you'd be busted faster than SOE can hit the NERF key..

What legal battle? What country? As far as I've heard there was one case in Korea I think and Korean law doesn't apply outside Korea. If theres legal precedent in USA then I have not heard about it.Everyone says the "your buying my time" thing in the eBay auctions. But that doesn't make it legal. THe EULA for SWG explicitly forbids sale of credits.
I think I might open a bar in RL. I don't want to fuss with a liqueur licence so I think I'll just sell the time I took to pickup and stock the booze.
I also may decide to start selling pot. If I get busted, I'll only get possession rather than distribution since I've got the old "selling my time to grow it" defense up my sleeve.
I'm not saying I know how such a case would end up in court. I just know that if the "time" argument held up, it'd be pathetic.
Yeah, I hope my boss didn't take that "Screw you, I'm outta here" speach too seriously...

probably the only way to really stop it is to eliminate the market. or have sony be the one taking control of brokering sales. obviously, plenty of people buy credits or there wouldn't be people who sell them. i don't really understand this. i have about 13 mill and i don't try that hard. its more than enough for most things and i certainly can go get more pretty quick if i wanted to.

So there we go. now how to go about reporting them... I ponder the following question...
For example, lets say a clear-as-day credit sale conversation takes place in game.
You say, "so I am going to give you 10 million credits, and you are going to give me $10 via paypal for it?"

whats different now is that its no longer just players looking to make a little profit, there are actually businesses that are being set up whose sole purpose is to farm credits or gold and resell them.
these are not players...this is people being paid low wages in china and korea to grind out cash for resale. its been in the news recently. like gaming sweatshops.
while in a post above i made mention of loot h00rs in game as being the primary sellers what i think the OP was referring to was the groups of n00bs running missions out of dant wearing nothing, talking to no one. if you ask them anything, they say they are in china and don't speak english and blow you off.
again tho, this doesn't serve as proof of wrongdoing to see a player or group of players like this so there is nothing to report them for.
probably the only way to really stop it is to eliminate the market. or have sony be the one taking control of brokering sales. obviously, plenty of people buy credits or there wouldn't be people who sell them. i don't really understand this. i have about 13 mill and i don't try that hard. its more than enough for most things and i certainly can go get more pretty quick if i wanted to.
As I stated in previous posts. This is not new... been around forever just being brought out into the public more lately and yes the best would be for SOE to take control of it assuring that no one gets ripped off in the buy sell transaction and someone regulating keeping the wage slave companies out of it...
