Thread: Locked Containers
It's a lousy thing to do. Don't do it.
That said, I agree that it should be possible for smugglers to be able to tell if something is already sliced. If you can slice it, you can see if it has been sliced already. It would be fine if you were only doing it to non-smugglers who were just going to try and sell it to some desparate novice for a profit. Then the smuggler could tell the guy he'd been ripped of and laugh at him for trying to con a con-man. At least that's the way I see it playing out.
Lovely. The people who don't truly know how to roleplay use it as an excuse every time they do something that could be construed as rude/tacky/annoying/fill-in-the-blank. But until there's some way to verify that an item is what it's advertised to be, and there's some way to make people accountable for their actions, we're going to have people who do this. Does "roleplaying" a smuggler also involve standing at a crowded bank yelling that you'll slice for free?
I know I've just added a name to the list of people that I won't buy anything from, bazaar or otherwise.
See, your mistake is thinking that a smuggler is a rogue/thief class. If it is, where's my hide, sneak, and invisibility function? What's the keystroke for pickpocket?
A smuggler is a business man that deals with things respectable vendors would not touch. They aren't two-bit thieves. Smugglers are suave and sophisticated.
Because of that, they have to be honest, and do good work. They also make a name for themselves at being the best smuggler.
I would gladly pay 10k for a slice from a reputable smuggler, than 100creds to some joe-schmoe who has ripped people off on occasion. Exactly WHO do you think is going to make it as a "smuggler"?
You can expect people to send you abusive e-mail and tells.
You can expect people to harrass you.
You can expect to develop a horrid reputation. MMORP communities have long institutional memories.
You can eventually expect a CSR to give you a warning for violating the TOS. Fraud is not allowed under the TOS you agree to every time you log in. Also, under the TOS roleplaying is nota reasonable basis for violating any other TOS rules.
You weigh the consequences of your actions.
4. You may not defraud other players.
Fraud in all transactions between players will result in disciplinary action when confirmed by a CSR. Fraud is defined as falsely representing one's intentions to make a gain at another's expense. Examplesof this activity include but are not limited to offering to drag the corpse of another player to safety but instead hiding it deeper in an area unknown or dangerous, as well as using flaws in a secure trade window to deprive someone of one or more of their items.
8. "Roleplaying" does not grant license to violate these rules.
Though Star Wars Galaxies is a roleplaying game set in the Star Wars universe, the claim of "roleplay" will not be accepted in defense of any of the anti-social behaviors mentioned above. As an example, you are in no case (PvP or otherwise) allowed to "train" a guard onto an enemy in protection of your homeland. In another example, a bounty hunter is not allowed to steal someone's corpse under the guise of roleplaying a villain.

In a perfect game system, other smugglers would be able to examine the container and tell that the item had allready been sliced and failed, and hence not purchase the container. Since there is NO way to tell a container has allready been sliced until you try to slice it, this just seems like abusing the system.
Trash
I think that it is a scummy thing to do. You are not being a smuggler. You are being a fraud.
Smuggling is defined as:
- To import or export without paying lawful customs charges or duties.
- To bring in or take out illicitly or by stealth.
Not to steal by misrepresenting what you are selling. And don't try to say that you aren't misleading, you know who would be willing to buy locked containers, and what the outcome would be.
