Without CH, we are limited to 2 pets...
Personally i carry a Spat mount (palaeopteryx)
and a BE critter to help me with rifles... (10k health)
Without CH we are only limited to creature level 10, so our options are limited unfortunately.

What is your template? Do you have enough points to put some into CH?
I would suggest some kind of BE'd cat or one of the dog-like critters with high kinetic resists. It is very helpful to pick a pet that has good speed as well as checking on the stats. I have a BE Durni that can take on rancor lairs, but one the rancors take one step and they are far enough away to break combat and come after you instead. And that bunny does not exactly rush to the rescue. Hop. Hop. Hop.
When buying, keep an eye on the species - if it is vicious you will probably not be able to control it even if it is at the right level. I recently dropped a line of CH and even though I can control up to level 48, I can't call any of my pets that are over level 40 (narglatch, spiderss, etc.). I seem to have collected a lot of aggressive pets. /ponder

If you are a master ranger/ master combat prof... you can sacrifice novice medic for CH +1 box
which will give you 3 creatures, and depending on which box you take, either a higher level, or an extra critter.
either one you pick should work well. (personally i prefer the higher level critter as opposed to more)

*ahem* You can get 3 boxes of CH if you are Master Ranger and Master Elite Combat Profession

Calc thats assuming you have nothing in the FS trees. Im looking at switching of my Ranger skills back into CH. I miss my pets and i want to be able to walk around with some really nice Frankenpets. So freeing up the 28 points should get my Ranger 4/0/4/0(i value conceal even as a melee'er) and get 2 complete columns in CH since i have my novice. Fiqure i go 4/0/0/4 and i could have a couple of the broken CL10's out or a 10 and a mix of a CL19 to get to 29 which i think is where i would be at that point.
The second column can be handled by BE clothing and food.

No i haven't tried master rifles yet, but that is the plan. will have to drop down one box from CH though, yet not corncerned too much cuz i was sure master rifle would add alot.
i was master ranger at one point, but at the time i diecided to go for CH and looked at how little i used the ranger traps and how under developed they were and decided the trade-off was worth it. still use scout traps sometimes, but mostly I throw the pet on the mobs and blast away, lol
