Thread: Need advice
Prepare to be hit hard. Its 10k credits for 110 fp. Lol and you thought it was 1:1
If that isnt bad enough, you cant buy any more faction points after you have 500.
Well, hehe, it can't get any WORSE......
(actually I shouldn't say that, I probably just jinxed us all)
The devs promise that there are GREAT things in store for us DE. Go read The Plan stickied to the top of the forum.
But I'd be happy just to see the bugs get fixed. Go read Outstanding Issues stickied to the top of the forum.
Droids are fun. They are why I bought the game and became a DE. But I wouldn't expect to get rich off it right now. You probably will need another source of income.
We've been told by the devs that our issues will soon be addressed.
I don't want to be a downer, I love droids myself... But there's a real reason that every DE you know has stopped doing it.
Some people do, and some people do not, have the temperment to stick with this extremely broken profession. There are a lot of down sides, and many people cannot see the good bits because of the many bad bits.
That being said, one CAN be successful as a DE, one can not only earn a living but can actually become quite well-off.
I'm a very casual player, just 30-45 minutes on weekday mornings, maybe another quick ten minutes or sometimes (if I'm lucky) an hour or two in the evenings. Heck, my best play time is RIGHT NOW, and I'm out because of server-down. However, in the past three weeks I've spent something like 600K on resources, and I am still close to cracking a million in the bank.
The tricks to droid engineering are customer service and name recognition. Shop location is a factor, but being searchable with a droid engineer title is hugely important. Most of the people I speak with do not buy right then and there, although some do. Many come back a day or a week later, some just purchasing quietly from a vendor, some placing custom orders. I spend lots of TIME with these people, explaining the good and bad points of our droids, and I offer (and usually have accepted) a series of emails I have written considering selecting a chassis, available modules, etc. etc.
I have been a DE for only a couple weeks. And im making a good living off of it. Seems whereI am there is a backlog of customers. I think for those of us coming into this so late we will see the changes. Where the ones who couldnt, understandably, hold on wo'nt.
I want to second what Rho said. I warn all my clients about the issues with whatever bot they are buying. Its to easy to get a bad reputation as a merchant. I have lost sales over the multiple crafting stations in one droid thing. And definatly over not being able to use a med droid in a cantina. Better they know up front. Warn your customers. Read the forums.
I just started Novice SL last night, and while I've been reading over the FAQ's here etc, I'm still not to clear on the best trees or skills to level first.
I noticed one that concentrates everyones fire on the target you choose (which sounds really cool), but basically I want to gain the most useful skills first and just level things like terrain negotiation last. Is this the right idea? Is there something different I should be doing? I've read that XP is related to combat XP, andgroup size. Is it dependant on anything else like a certain skill giving more than another?
Thanks!

Here's the truth - nothing is useful at the moment except for terrain negotiation. If I were starting over, I would get Mobility I, /formup, mobility II and II, and then everything else.
PS - the command that concentrates fire is not nearly as cool as you want it to be - it makes everyone with a ranged weapon shoot one regular shot at what you are targeting. It never does much damage over 200.
So how do I get XP as a novice? I have no commands except the group message? Not quite sure what I have to do to get started?

We haven't determined the exact formula for getting SLXP, but we know that it is based on combat xp that your group earns while you are the leader of the group and it scales based on the size of the group (ie. the bigger the group, the more xp you'll receive). It used to be based on just your own share of the combat xp, later it was based on the group's xp but was coming excruciatingly slowly...and now it's basically TOO easy to get.
In a nutshell, form a group or join one and ask the leader to target you and use /makeleader so that you can start getting SLXP. Then just go hunting and watch the xp roll in... The most important thing to remember is: Have fun!! Squad Leader is currently a very lame profession as all the skills are extremely underpowered and/or broken, but the actual process of leading a group (with or without the Squad Leader profession) is a lot of fun. Try not to get too jaded, hope may be on the horizon. (don't really know for certain tho, since we STILL haven't received a dev response)
